Giving every child the best start in life is a cornerstone of the government's Plan for Change. We’re supporting Kindred Squared's new ‘Starting Reception’ definition to help: ✏️ Close the gap between what parents and teachers view as being ‘school ready’ 🚸 Build children’s confidence and independence 📈 Reach the government’s target to raise the number of children who are ready to start reception to 75% 🤗 Support children with SEND and their families by recognising the importance of ensuring education settings are ready to support them and their parents to practise key skills in the home. The list of suggested skills and activities to prepare children for the classroom includes: 🍴 Using cutlery 🚽 Being fully toilet trained (except for the occasional accident) 🧸 Sharing toys 🖌️ Drawing, painting and colouring 😀 Talking about feelings 🪥 Brushing teeth twice a day Find guidance and the full list of steps to help your child get off to a flying start at school ➡️ startingreception.co.uk

  • Too many children are starting school without the skills they need to thrive. While 9 in 10 parents believe their child is school ready, teachers say only 1 in 3 actually are. This gap in expectations can impact not just individual children but the entire classroom. 🏫 That’s we've joined a coalition of early years and education organisations to come together to create Starting Reception; a clear, practical definition of school readiness that parents, educators, and policymakers can use. This resource outlines essential skills in: ✅ Growing independence (dressing, toileting, using cutlery) ✅ Communication & social skills (taking turns, expressing emotions) ✅ Physical development (fine & gross motor skills, active play) ✅ Healthy routines (toothbrushing, screen time limits) The initiative aims to ensure every child has an equal start in education, supporting both families and schools in preparing for this crucial transition. 🔗 Explore the full guide at https://bit.ly/4hrGya2 or read more in our latest blog article https://bit.ly/3Fk4YFe #StartingReception #SchoolReadiness #EarlyYears #Education
