Last Thursday, I had the privilege of pitching Ove Care Ltd at the Accelerating FemTech Showcase hosted by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG, in collaboration with HIN South London and DigitalHealth.London It was incredible to share the stage with my fellow cohort - well done to all of you for your inspiring pitches and powerful missions. People who sleep rough experience some of the most significant health inequalities of any group. Since 2023, the Rough Sleeping and Mental Health Programme (RAMHP) in south London has provided support for people who sleep rough, helping them to access mental health services and treatment. Our evaluation of the programme, which is delivered by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust, has now been completed. The evaluation found that: 📈RAMHP effectively engaged rough sleepers, providing personalised care, and comprehensive support that significantly improved wellbeing for its service users. 🤝 Key to this success has been a flexible and holistic approach, dedicated practitioners, and strong partnerships with outreach agencies and local authorities. ⛔ The programme has also faced operational and systemic challenges, including difficulties in staff recruitment and retention due to funding limitations and the specialised nature of the work, inconsistencies in referral criteria, and wider systemic issues like housing shortages and the complexities of mental health assessments for this vulnerable population. Such a pleasure to attend NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research)'s Forum for mental health technology innovators yesterday at the Royal Liver Building where the focus was on crucial topics such as children’s and young people's mental health, early psychosis and mood disorders. The inaugural Innovations in Women's Health Summit was an inspiring event, highlighting how far the #FemTech sector has come in recent years. The keynote address from Women's Health Minister, Baroness Merron, showed the Government's commitment to this vital area of healthcare. It gave a great platform to spotlight some of the companies and projects being supported through Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst (BMC). The event was organised by Health Innovation Network South London (HIN) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG The BMC Accelerating FemTech accelerator, delivered by HIN and partners, and funded by Innovate UK in collaboration with the Medical Research Council, is supporting 21 early-stage companies, university spinouts and entrepreneurially-minded academics. This builds on the success of the previous BMC Accelerating Femtech accelerator, also delivered by HIN South London. Ten projects from this went on to receive BMC feasibility funding. Chris Sawyer, Innovation Lead, Digital Health at Innovate UK, commented: “One of the pillars of the Biomedical Catalyst is support for early stage businesses, to enable them to grow by translating their ideas into innovative products and services that can improve patients’ lives and boost UK economic growth. “The presentations at yesterday’s event highlighted the great advances already being made in this growing area, but also the work still to be done. The traditional model of quality improvement for trialling technology could be described as "crawl, run, walk"; starting small and gradually scaling and refining. However, for the rapidly-evolving and potentially transformative technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a slow-and-steady approach is likely to be counterproductive, argue London's health innovation network Chief Executive Officers. Find out why the HIN's Rishi Das-Gupta and his counterparts at Imperial College Health Partners Dominique Allwood and UCLPartners Chris Laing are advocating for a new model: "run, walk, drag".

Last week we co-hosted a Hydration Summit for Managers with colleagues at the South West London Integrated Care Board. The event brought together care homes involved in the #ButFirstADrink pilot to share learning on how to improve hydration in care settings. Dehydration can lead to serious complications like UTIs, Acute Kidney Injury and Urosepsis, and this work is part of a wider programme across England.   It was a fantastic, interactive day with engaging speakers, practical sessions and plenty of opportunities for learning and networking. Over 85 delegates attended, including senior managers from care homes and colleagues from acute settings.   David Williams from SWL ICB ran a CQC-focused session using role play and case studies to explore best practice. Dr Diane Bunn from University of East Anglia shared research on dehydration in older adults and challenged us to think creatively about encouraging fluid intake.   Safeguarding leads Edwina Curtis and Estelene Klaasen presented on cases linked to poor hydration. Pharmacist Lilian Li gave insight into how certain medications affect hydration, and Debbie Calver covered UTI prevention, including catheter care and hand hygiene.   Janine Lane and Julie Sanders from CLCH spoke about the impact of dehydration on frailty, including delirium and falls. Briony Sloper from NHS England (London Region) discussed the London Catheter Care Improvement Programme and the importance of community response.   David Williams closed the event with a powerful session on influencing change and creating a shared vision for improving hydration.   The event was chaired brilliantly by Lucie Waters, Andrea Carter and Laura Whitney. Earlier this month, we welcomed Welsh government and health care delegates to London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) for an insightful day of knowledge exchange. 💡 Anna King, Commercial Director at Health Innovation Network South London (HIN) and Ruth Bradbury, Senior Programme Manager at DigitalHealth.London, worked alongside MediWales to showcase how the HIN is increasing the spread and adoption of innovation across large populations, at pace and scale. The group also heard from LIHE about their ground-breaking work supporting start-ups and SMEs that are advancing new medical technologies.
