Tony Sedgwick and I had fun hosting our #CreativeDisruption Forum yesterday in Oxford. We had such a great line-up of keynote interviews in the morning followed by our interactive workshops in the afternoon. The focus was the UK Life Sciences Strategy and Where are the Opportunities. We kicked off with interviews around #AI, #ML and #BigData with Jürgen Harter, Gareth Conduit and Samir Khan PhD. We then moved on looking at the “Big Picture” of #lifesciences with a focus on the #Oxford #Ecosystem with special guests Chas Bountra from University of Oxford and Claire Brown from Oxford Science Enterprises. Finally Tony interviewed business leaders Dave H., Miguel Campos Silva and Kelly McKee to get the company points of view regarding UK Life Sciences strategy and the unique Oxford ecosystem. A big thanks go to Deborah Spencer for her support with building our speaker line-up and also Regeane Bagonyi for the great photos. We had guests from all over the #UK with Ian Pinches and Sally-Ann Emmas travelling from the UK North West an international delegate from #Ireland who was Darina Hynes, PhD, plus regulars from #Cambridge, #London and surrounding areas. One thought was the #UK as a #supercluster in #lifesciences punching above its weight in #research, #development and the #researchservices in the #global #ecosystem. From the meeting some of us discussed looking to develop outreach to young graduates and post graduates considering careers in the life sciences industry. We will start by developing an advisory board which will start by inviting Lynne Trowbridge, Helen Bligh, Oliver Spray, Mahima Turakhia, Mandeep Sehmi, Tia Y. and any others that will like to get involved (contact me for more details). We recognise there is a disconnect especially those that were at Universities during #covid and we are keen to reconnect and engage to help support activities such as networking, communication, support and direction. The toughest challenge will be to make such an activity sustainable which will be done with sponsor support. So if you work for an organisation that would consider supporting such an initiative, reach out to me, we want you involved. These graduates are our future and we would like to develop activities to support them. I was having a chat with my colleagues the other day about our portfolio (we've got a pretty diverse founder group - it's something we actively monitor and are proud of) and general founder dermographics across VC backed companies. One big discussion point that came about - entirely organically with 'tech bros' as an inspiration - was regarding the age of founders across our portfolio (again, we have a great mix) and more generally across lifesciences/healthcare and tech and whether there was a difference in how well they were performing and their success. So.....me being me....I thought i'd do a bit of reading. As an FYI, this topic came up several year ago pre-COVID (I recall a Wharton report as particularly stand-out-ish) and from memory, the general consensus was that 35 - 45 year olds tended to 'perform' better as entrepreneurs. Has it changed over recent times, especially given the COVID driven digital switch? Here's a snippet of what I found (there are unsurprisingly quite a lot of articles...): 👉 A comprehensive study from FounderJar found that a 40-year-old founder is 2.1 times more likely to succeed than a 25-year-old, with the average age of successful founders at 41.5 years. Even more impressive, the average age of those who exit with an IPO or acquisition is 46.5.
