On my way to work this morning, I overheard a snapshot of a conversation. “I really struggle with those morning meetings. I don’t know what he wants me to do?” I wondered how it must feel to leave a meeting with no idea what’s expected? No direction. No clarity! In a world where busy-ness can be a ‘badge of honour’ we often rush from one meeting to the next without thinking. But at what cost? 'But' shuts the door. 'And' opens it. I was working with a client on a difficult conversation with a challenging partner. As we rehearsed the interaction, we noticed a tiny word kept tripping us up. In the other person’s shoes, this word made me feel unheard and misunderstood. When we say, ‘I understand but…’ we shut the door, we block the other’s perspective, we dismiss their concern. When we say, ‘I understand and…’ we appreciate their perspective, we invite dialogue, we move forward. The conversation IS the relationship, and a 3 letter word can shape how others feel about us! Silence speaks louder!   It’s half-term. For many, no early starts, no school runs, no rushing!   For a week, life slows down, just a little. We exhale, we inhale, we take our time.   But when we speak—especially when it matters— we do the opposite. We rush, we fill every second, nerves take over. And our message? It gets lost.   What if we saw a pause not as an awkward gap, but as an amazing tool? A well-placed pause gives your audience time to think. And it makes you sound more confident!
