Delighted to share the paper ‘Disrupt through Digital?’ by MIOIR’s Andrew James, Ali El Samra and Khaleel Malik is among the top 10 most-cited in R&D Management Journal last year 👏 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/eQ5zBmQR #DigitalTransformation #Innovation
Disrupt through digital? My paper with Ali El Samra and Khaleel Malik published in R&D Management is among the top 10 most-cited papers published by the journal last year. The paper examines the opportunities and challenges faced by companies when they seek to digitalise R&D. Digitalization and automation represent potential sources of disruption to the organization and practice of research and development (R&D). Digitalization has the potential to revolutionize future R&D, as digitalized R&D may improve efficiency and minimize risk thus reducing cycle and development times. However, companies should expect organizational challenges in their R&D organization when they start to implement and work with digital technologies. Through an in-depth case analysis, we investigate these organizational challenges at Unilever, one of the world's leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies. Three challenges were identified: (1) managerial challenges; (2) behavioral challenges; and (3) digital technology skills challenges. Based on the identified challenges within the context of digitalizing an R&D center, our study provides some practical advice to R&D managers. At Industry and Innovation, we received the news of Stan Metcalfe’s very recent and unexpected passing with sadness. Stan Metcalfe was for decades a prominent voice elucidating the processes of economic development. His work helped establish and refine the understanding of innovation as a phenomenon of key scholarly interest. His command of language in both the written and spoken form was widely cherished. I&I Associate Editor Anders Broström shares a memory from Stan’s 2022 Swedish Schumpeter Lecture: 🗨️ "Hearing Stan lecture on innovation and evolution was a very uplifting experience. Following the discussion between Stan and his discussant Andrea Mina, who wrote his PhD thesis under Stan’s supervision, I felt as if I were attending Socrates’ discussion with his Athenian disciples." We are happy to have had the chance to publish an edited version of that discussion in a recent issue of Industry and Innovation: https://lnkd.in/daeWhxFi. Stan’s intellectual legacy will remain enduringly important for the community of scholars that shares his fascination with innovation, evolution, and industrial dynamics. In Memory of Professor Stan Metcalfe (1946-2025) It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Professor Stan Metcalfe. Stan was a wonderful colleague, great mentor and an inspiration to many colleagues in the Institute and internationally. A leading figure in innovation studies, his groundbreaking contributions to evolutionary economics have left a lasting impact. As a founding member of MIoIR and a key figure in its predecessors PREST and CRIC, Stan played a pivotal role in shaping our institute’s intellectual direction and fostering a culture of academic excellence. Beyond his academic achievements, Stan was incredibly kind, always enthusiastic, supportive of junior colleagues and deeply intellectually curious. His loss is profoundly felt at MIoIR and across the field of innovation studies. To honour Stan’s legacy, we share his recently published Working Paper 2024-02: Joseph Schumpeter, Alfred Marshall and the Nature of Restless Capitalism: https://lnkd.in/dT3rwadx We understand that many of you may wish to pay your respects and we invite you to share your messages of condolence and memories on our memorial page, accessible via Prof Stan Metcalfe’s Kudoboard: https://lnkd.in/d8P7_UY8

Very excited to secure new funding from Innovation & Research Caucus with Professor Elvira Uyarra and Professor Kostas Selviaridis to explore how innovation policies impact UK supply chains. Specifically, this project aims to address a key gap in policy evaluations, which often focus on supported firms while overlooking broader supply chain effects. We will construct and leverage an interesting, dynamic dataset with firm-level supply chain relationships to examine how innovation policies influence innovation diffusion and supply chain resilience.
We're pleased to announce that nine projects have been awarded funding as part of our second Flexible Fund Open Call. 🎟️ Final tickets remaining for the below "Opening Up Research" event! Join the discussion on how #OpenResearch practices, such as transparent methods can enhance trust in research, both within academia and with the wider public. 📢 MIOIR’s Mabel Sánchez Barrioluengo will be sharing insights from her working paper, co-authored with Cornelia Lawson and Anders Broström on trust in scientists, available here: https://lnkd.in/eDZmh4dv
There are still tickets left to join our next "Opening Up Research" event - all details on Eventbrite: https://lnkd.in/eHtym_Nk Join Elisa Bellotti, Jack Wilkinson, Mabel Sánchez Barrioluengo and Lily Verity and me as we discuss whether #OpenResearch practices such as transparent methods increase trust in research between researchers and with the wider public. Trust is fundamental to research—shaping public engagement, influencing policy, and securing funding. Confidence in research affects everything from participation in clinical trials and climate action to the use of economic and social research in decision-making. Transparency in research methods strengthens collaboration, enhances credibility, and helps prevent poor practices. Really looking forward to the discussions with this multi-disciplinary panel from across The University of Manchester on how openness in research methodologies fosters trust among researchers, institutions, funders, and the wider public.
