📺 A mobile access tower had its moment in the spotlight on last night’s Coronation Street, but unfortunately, so did a falling brace - thanks to careless Lyle (branded an ‘absolute spoon’ by his own gaffer). From his 4 metre platform, Lyle managed to send the brace crashing to the ground, giving poor Julie the fright of her life. As her sister Eileen rushed to her side, funeral director George summed up the situation perfectly, warning site manager Theo: “You need a bit of health & safety training - before your business becomes a feeder for mine.” He’s not wrong. Falling objects are a real risk when assembling or dismantling a tower, which is why setting up a proper exclusion zone is a must. Points for effort to the lads, who had some barriers in place - but as the scene shows, a few scattered cones won’t stop pedestrians from wandering into danger. A sturdier solution, like temporary site fencing or other effective barriers, would have been a much safer bet for the good people of Weatherfield. And Theo’s excuse - “She shouldn’t have been stood where she was” - wouldn’t hold much weight if Julie had ended up in A&E. As for the tower itself? You'll have to read our response in full to see what we thought of that. Spoiler alert: it's not good. ➡️ RESPONSE IN FULL: https://lnkd.in/eeXUVmra CREDIT: Coronation Street / ITV

  • 🚧⚠️ An employer has been fined after an HSE investigation found serious safety issues with a tower scaffold in Merseyside. ⚠️🚧 The tower had been assembled incorrectly, the instruction manual was not followed and there was no built-in ladder to provide safe access to the platform. Instead, workers had to scramble up the rungs of the tower - something they were never designed for. Following the investigation, A. I. M Access Solutions Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined £30,800. 📣 Steve Booker, PASMA chairman, said: "If there’s one phrase a PASMA member repeats more than any other, it’s ‘follow the manual’. This document is so crucial that all PASMA members who manufacture, supply or hire towers are audited to make sure they provide one. And in PASMA training, everyone is taught to follow the manual – it’s drilled into them. But what really matters is making sure that knowledge is applied on site, every time a tower is built." 📣 Ian H., vice chair of the PASMA hire & assembly committee, added: "It’s particularly concerning that the employer in this case appears to provide a hire & assembly service, meaning they build towers for others to work from. This is safety-critical work. That's why PASMA hire & assembly members have to follow a code of conduct, are subject to a strict audit regime and use highly skilled Access Tower Specialists trained by PASMA." We encourage every company that hires tower scaffolds to adopt our safety standards and become a member. The company involved in this case has not yet done so. PASMA welcomes this prosecution and hopes it serves as a wake-up call to other employers. They must ensure their teams are properly trained, provided with safe equipment, and working from safe towers, every single time. Our thoughts are with the family of Robert Duffy, whose death triggered the investigation that led to this prosecution. ➡️ Read our response in full: https://lnkd.in/eBNyAJ7g
