🔎 RedR UK project deep-dive: Training local responders to the war in Sudan. The head of UNICEF has described Sudan as “the world’s largest and most devastating humanitarian crisis”, with more than half of the population needing #humanitarian assistance. Humanitarians from local and national NGOs and community-led groups in #Sudan have been leading the response. Working in partnership with the Humanitarian Academy for Development (HAD), our recent training project sought to understand and address local learning needs, remove roadblocks, and empower individuals to provide the best possible assistance and training to people affected by this devastating conflict. Key results: 💡 Sudan Learning Needs Assessment published 💡 28 FREE online facilitated modules delivered to 555 participants 💡 2 Training of Trainers courses delivered to 33 participants 💡 Training & materials made available in both English & Arabic Learn more about the project and its impact ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eHv4r4bc Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and H2H Network.

Thank you to Sphere Standards today who sparked curiosity about how to critically reflect on #AI as it applies to the humanitarian sector through its expert panel and RedR UK facilitated workshop. Developing AI literacy across core competencies of digital planning and design, data use and governance, and digital management and delivery is a starting point, one that is grounded in humanitarian principles. #AIforGood #HumanCenteredAI #EthicalTech
AI is here – but how do we make sure it works for humanity? Today’s discussion on AI in the humanitarian sector was packed with thought-provoking insights. We explored what AI can do, what it shouldn’t do, and how we can use it responsibly. 💡 Some key reflections from the conversation: 🔸 AI is a tool, not a replacement for human decision-making. Keeping people at the center is non-negotiable. 🔸 From geospatial mapping to real-time translations, AI is already making humanitarian work faster and more effective. 🔸 Ethics matter. Safeguards and governance frameworks must evolve alongside AI to protect communities. 🔸 Funders have a key role to play – supporting innovation while ensuring AI aligns with humanitarian values. 🔸 Collaboration is the way forward. Instead of reinventing the wheel, let’s build AI solutions that truly serve people in crisis. A huge thank you to our incredible speakers and panelists for sharing their expertise: Ana Pinto de Oliveira Primo Amrein - Microsoft Andrew Nzimbi James Michael Maltby - Save the Children UK Bernadette Sexton - RedR UK Victoria Webbe - RedR UK Tristan R Hale #SphereAtTheHNPW #AIforGood #HumanCenteredAI #EthicalTech #HumanitarianInnovation #AIinAction

Our CEO, Bernadette Sexton, will be sharing her expertise in the panel on ‘Humanitarian AI Literacy, Fluency and Readiness’, taking place during the first part of the session - available in-person and online. Then, in the second half, our Learning and Development Manager Victoria Webbe will be facilitating the in-person workshop on ‘AI Literacy for Humanitarians.’ 📅 Wednesday 26th March, 8-9.30am GMT Register for the online event via Zoom: https://lnkd.in/efw8ScnK Attending #HNPW in person? 📝 Our Senior Technical Programmes Coordinator Noorullah Kuchai recently co-authored a research paper for Sustainability MDPI on 'Adapting Housing Design Tools for Indoor Thermal Comfort to Changing Climates.' Current housing design tools for low-resource areas rely on outdated climate data and adaptation strategies. This means many homes and shelters for crisis-affected populations are vulnerable to increasingly extreme weather conditions caused by climate change. 🏘️ By incorporating future climate adaptability into housing design, we can ensure that shelters remain safe, comfortable, and sustainable in the long term. This will ultimately improve the wellbeing and resilience of crisis-affected populations. Learn more by reading the paper: https://lnkd.in/eHkAQzCv Find out about RedR's work in climate change adaptation: https://lnkd.in/e9fBidww Co-authored by: Anna Conzatti (University of Exeter), Carolina Pereira Marghidan (Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre), and Eefje Hendriks🟥 (University of Twente).
💥 New Paper on housing design tools for future proof indoor thermal comfort! 💥 🥵🥶 Climate change is happening! We see how it impacts our built environment all around the world. People are suffering from extreme heat, cold and weather events. Especially, low-cost housing is insufficiently adapted to the climate extremes of the future! Shockingly, current housing design tools still use historical climate data and are also far too complicated for non-specialist users! 🙌 I found a team to make a difference! I met Anna Conzatti (University of Exeter) and Noorullah Kuchai (RedR UK) each year at the UK Shelter Forum meetings to discuss the future of Humanitarian Shelter and Settlements response connected to several Global Shelter Cluster working groups. We share a passion for housing design tools and sustainability, and we saw the need to adapt tools to future climate scenarios! We have a background in architecture, tool development, adaptation to climate change, resilience and humanitarian assistance. We joined forces with climate scientist Carolina Pereira Marghidan (Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente, KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre). 🏡 In our article, we evaluate four carefully selected housing design tools in terms of their ability to improve thermal comfort in low-cost housing under future climate scenarios. The evaluation is based on an expert weighted multi-criteria assessment incorporating five key factors: future climate adaptability, guideline accuracy, user-friendliness, accessibility, and adaptability to user needs. 👀 Read further to explore our suggestions to adapt housing design tools to future climate scenarios!
