📦 Barrier coatings are important for protecting fibre-based materials and extending food and beverage shelf life, but they also complicate recycling and contribute to the growing packaging waste crisis. ♻️ In 2022 alone, the EU generated 83.4 million tonnes of packaging waste, with many materials considered non-recyclable due to mixed materials and contamination. As we strive for sustainability, it's vital to explore innovative solutions that can improve recyclability and reduce environmental impact. 📰 Our latest article dives deep into the complexities of barrier coatings, their implications for recycling, and the exciting advancements in bio-based alternatives. 👨🔬 Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing have developed a groundbreaking method to create ultra-thin sheets of metal, just atoms thick, opening up new avenues for exploration and innovation. 👩🔬 By heating metal droplets between sapphire anvils coated with molybdenum disulfide, they are able to produce stable, 2D metal sheets that are easier to study. 🔬 These 'atomically thin' metals exhibit properties that differ significantly from their bulk counterparts. For example, #graphene is mechanically tougher and more conductive of heat and electricity than is the graphite in pencil tips. 🧪 This innovation is just the beginning! As physicist Javier D Sanchez-Yamagishi from UC Irvine (University of California) notes, it paves the way for further research into the fascinating characteristics of these new materials. 🚀 This breakthrough not only enhances our understanding of 2D materials but also sets the stage for future applications across various industries. Imagine the potential for electronics, energy storage, and beyond! To read more: https://lnkd.in/eZEG5Cfp #MaterialsScience #OpenInnovation #2DMaterials #Bismuthene

🌟 Innovative Solutions Across Industries: A Dental Breakthrough Inspired by Industrial Coatings! 🦷 Researchers at Queen Mary University of London have adapted a coating typically used to protect tanks and pipelines from corrosion into a groundbreaking dental treatment designed to combat tooth decay and acid erosion. 🌉 This novel approach utilises flake glass technology, which has proven effective in maintaining steel bridges like the Forth Bridge, in Scotland, for up to 25 years. Just as this technology protects against harsh conditions, Varnish VLC mimics the natural properties of enamel, offering superior wear resistance and enhanced protection for teeth. Dr. Saroash Shahid, the research lead, emphasizes the importance of looking beyond traditional fields for inspiration—and we wholeheartedly agree! 👉 At Strategic Allies Limited, we believe that true innovation arises when we bridge ideas across diverse industries. By continuing to explore and collaborate across sectors, we can unlock new possibilities and deepen our understanding of both challenges and solutions. #OpenInnovation #CrossIndustry #StrategicAllies #VarnishVLC #Inspiration

🌱 Unlocking the Potential of Agricultural Waste: A New Case Study from Strategic Allies Limited 🌱 We are excited to share our latest case study, showcasing a project with a global FMCG manufacturer committed to sustainability. The client sought to explore the potential of replacing their existing cellulose sources with alternative materials derived from agricultural waste streams. Project Overview: ▶️ Objective - Identify and appraise agricultural waste streams that could serve as viable cellulose sources. ▶️ Approach - A two-phase search strategy was implemented: - Phase 1: Conducted secondary research to identify agricultural wastes across 12 key geographies, including crop residues and food processing waste. These materials were assessed based on criteria such as cellulose composition, moisture content, and commercial viability. - Phase 2: Engaged with subject matter experts and suppliers to validate findings and gain deeper insights into the challenges and opportunities for valorizing agricultural waste. ▶️ Outcome - Our investigation revealed 20 agricultural waste products that could be utilised as cellulose sources. These options were evaluated for their availability and accessibility in various regions. The comprehensive report and executive summary provided the client with valuable insights, empowering their board members to make informed decisions regarding their commercial strategy. At Strategic Allies, we are proud to support our clients in their #sustainability efforts and drive innovation through the valorisation of agricultural by-products. 🏭 Industrial waste gases may soon be transformed into valuable surfactants for household products like shampoo, detergent, and liquid fuel. 💡 Led by Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan at the University of Surrey, a groundbreaking study highlights the environmental advantages of converting CO₂ emissions into essential chemical components. ➡️ This not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also contributes to a #circulareconomy by repurposing waste. ⛽ As part of the Flue2Chem initiative - a first-of-its kind collaboration to design and validate a UK value chain to convert valuable industrial carbon emissions (both fossil and non-fossil) into sustainable materials for consumer - products researchers have conducted a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) for the first time, evaluating the process of turning waste gases from steel and paper mills into alcohol ethoxylate, a surfactant used in consumer products, as well as low to medium distillate liquid fuel. Discover more about this innovative research here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKXQuN7V and about the Flue2Chem initiative 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVGt35wY

🌍 Protecting Our Pollinators: The Vital Role of Hoverflies 🌼 🐞 Recent findings from the citizen science survey Bugs Matter, led by Kent Wildlife Trust and Buglife, reveal a concerning trend: the number of flying insect samples on vehicle number plates has decreased by a staggering 78% since 2004. A UK Government report further highlights a 44% decline in hoverfly distribution between 1980 and 2022. 🐝 Hoverflies, often underappreciated, play a crucial role in our ecosystems. These tiny creatures are not only essential pollinators for our gardens, but they also help control aphid populations and recycle organic waste. 🍏 🍓 With over 200 species across the UK, they contribute significantly to maintaining biodiversity, ensuring our food crops and wildflowers thrive. But without these vital pollinators, we risk losing essential crops like apples and strawberries, as well as the beauty of our gardens. 🏡 This year, the Wild About Gardens campaign, a collaboration between the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and The Wildlife Trusts, is focusing on turning the UK's 30 million gardens into wildlife-friendly spaces, aiming at giving these tiny heroes the space they deserve... 🌱💚 To read more about this initiative: https://lnkd.in/gXW9dVPT #Biodiversity #Pollinators #EnvironmentalHealth
