❓ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 ‘𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲’ 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂? Many people immediately think of social workers, but social care is so much more than that. It’s about any support outside of hospitals, GPs, or dentistry that helps people live well and achieve their goals—whether that’s living independently, staying active, or managing everyday life. It could include: • Support at home with cooking, dressing, or personal care • A personal assistant helping with daily activities • Transport to social or community groups • Living in supported accommodation or a care home • Help managing a long-term health condition so you can stay active • Respite care, day centres, or support for carers • Support with your mental health 📢 We’re looking to speak with adults (18+) who use social care services in Wales to understand what’s working well and what could be improved. 💬 It’s a relaxed, informal chat (online or by phone) 🕒 Takes around 30 mins – 1 hour 🎁 £25 One4all voucher as a thank-you 🗣 Welsh & English available 👉 Interested in sharing your experience? 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵? 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 In global health, publishing isn’t just about sharing research—it’s about access to funding, networks, and career progression. But what happens when high article processing charges and restrictive journal policies exclude researchers? As Dr. Joseph Mumba Zulu highlights in our latest episode, publishing barriers don’t just limit individual careers—they shape whose knowledge is valued, whose research informs policy, and who gets to contribute to global health solutions. If we want equity in global health, we must address structural exclusion in academic publishing. The Journal of Community Systems for Health (JCSH) is a step toward change—removing financial, linguistic, and systemic barriers to make publishing accessible to those closest to the challenges. "𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥. 𝘐𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭." – 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘋𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴. This truth resonates deeply in global health. There is often an expectation that change can happen without discomfort, without challenging established systems, without shifting power in a meaningful way. But as Shashika Bandara reminds us in the latest Connecting Citizens to Science episode, real allyship from Global North institutions and researchers means recognising that power won’t shift unless it is actively challenged. That challenge comes with necessary discomfort and sacrifice. The systemic barriers in global health—who controls funding, who shapes research priorities, who gets to publish—won’t be dismantled through rhetoric alone. But the good news is that solutions exist. Shashika, together with Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD and Catherine Kyobutungi, speak about these solutions in The Lancet article, Shifting Power in Global Health Will Require Leadership by the Global South and Allyship by the Global North, outlining concrete steps for multiple stakeholders to take action: https://lnkd.in/ei--K6Bn. The Journal of Community Systems for Health (JCSH - https://bit.ly/JCSH_CCS) is also actively breaking down financial, linguistic, and structural barriers to publishing, ensuring more equitable access to knowledge production. This is not about choosing between pushing boundaries in established journals or building new, more equitable platforms. It’s about doing both. We need to challenge extractive systems 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 supporting those reshaping the landscape from within. 👂👉𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: 𝗵𝘁𝘁𝗽𝘀://𝗯𝗶𝘁.𝗹𝘆/𝗖𝗖𝗦_𝗘𝟳𝟳 How do we ensure that global health research, funding, and policymaking reflect the needs of those most affected? 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗨𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗹 Global health isn’t confined to specific regions—it shapes economies, influences migration, and is deeply connected to issues like climate change. When health systems are inequitable, the effects are felt worldwide. Yet, the structures that determine funding, publishing, and policymaking in global health remain dominated by the Global North, often excluding the voices that should be leading the conversation. This episode of Connecting Citizens to Science explores what it takes to shift power in global health. Dr. Shashika Bandara, Dr. Moses Tetui, and Dr. Joseph Mumba Zulu discuss two major initiatives challenging these inequities: • A recent article in The Lancet, which argues that leadership from the Global South and meaningful allyship from the Global North are essential to changing global health structures. • The launch of the Journal of Community Systems for Health, a more equitable publishing platform designed to remove financial, linguistic, and structural barriers that have long restricted who gets to contribute to global health knowledge. Global health must be genuinely global. If knowledge production and decision-making remain concentrated in the Global North, we will continue to see inequitable responses to crises. The systems that shape global health must shift to include those closest to the challenges. 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: 👂𝗵𝘁𝘁𝗽𝘀://𝗯𝗶𝘁.𝗹𝘆/𝗖𝗖𝗦_𝗘𝟳𝟳 What are the practical steps we need to take to move toward a fairer, more inclusive global health system?
