How is Evelina London Children’s Hospital improving epilepsy diagnosis and reducing unnecessary referrals? Evelina London Children’s Hospital have released a ground breaking study, showing how the addition of home video reviews, using vCreate’s secure, clinical video management software, is allowing them to make more informed clinical decisions and more efficiently triage referrals.   Being able to view video footage of patients’ episodes allowed the specialists to more easily identify the nature of events and redirect referrals accordingly. Most neurophysiology teams are struggling with long waiting lists. Could home video reviews help to relieve pressure? Diagnosing neurological conditions can be complex. Many symptoms such as seizures, unusual movements and episodes of unresponsiveness, are difficult to assess based solely on patient or carer descriptions and brief clinical examinations. Clinicians rely on in-depth investigation methods such as EEGs and extended hospital observations for diagnosis. But these are costly and time consuming, with long waiting lists. A recent study, published in Epilepsia Open, shows how vCreate Health is helping a busy paediatric neurophysiology department within Evelina London Children’s Hospital to facilitate Home Video Reviews (HVR) to improve diagnosis and reduce unnecessary hospital investigations. The study found that incorporating the home video reviews through vCreate’s secure, cloud based clinical video management platform, allowed them to reduce uncertain diagnoses from 15 to just 2 cases, while 70% of referrals were able to be triaged away from the video-EEG telemetry waiting list.
