Over the last few months, we’re delighted to have welcomed @Elsa Verheul on board, working on a nuclear fusion-related CFD project, modelling the water inside the cooling tubes within a fusion reactor, using zCFD, which ultimately will ensure its safety. We wish Elsa success with her PhD in nuclear fusion, which she is starting in September at the University of Manchester. As members of ARPAS-UK, the collective voice of the UK drone industry, we’re delighted to share our Spotlight on its CEO, Anne-Lise Scaillierez. With her background in defence and aerospace, Anne-Lise Scallierez is in a perfect position to lead Arpas-UK and push the drone sector forward. On our Future Flight project, Anne-Lise told us: “This project by ARPAS-UK members, Zenotech and Flare Bright, is vital for beyond-the-line-of-sight drone flight and safer airspace sharing on a routine basis, which will be essential to improve drone safety and commerciality. I love the use of simulation to demonstrate the safety aspect which is cost-effective and time-saving. “Without these hi-tech tools, it is an expensive journey to prove safety and test all the permutations of wind on a particular day with a manual crew. All the costs will add up. Machine Learning is making an impact across all sectors and areas of our lives. The integration of ML in fluid dynamics promises to enhance simulation accuracy and reduce costs. But there is a need to collect data, set test cases and benchmarks to help us maximise the benefits. That’s what the Machine Learning and Fluid Dynamics Workshop set to achieve last year. What a pleasure to be part of Osborne Reynolds Day at The University of Manchester in collaboration with ERCOFTAC last week to engage with some of the brightest minds in the field of fluid mechanics. Our co-founder and director, David Standingford was invited to provide a brief introduction to ERCOFTAC, including its structure based on scientific research and its numerous publications and events which serve a global audience. Congratulations to the winner of this year’s competition, Dr Chris Goodwin, PhD, whose outstanding work on quantum turbulence in superfluid helium has introduced an innovative perspective on turbulence.
