If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

To help companies engage in effective climate advocacy, the UN Global Compact Network UK has organised a 4-part webinar series to provide practical guidance on how companies can contribute towards driving the regulatory outcomes needed to deliver on their net zero goals. Today, we joined the second session of the series discussing 'The Role of Industry Associations'. Hearing from the session's speakers, Heather Buchanan, Ben Pincombe, Louise Kjellerup Roper, Miguel Angel Munoz Rodriguez, and Sarah Cook, CDMP, the session explored how companies can monitor their indirect climate-related corporate lobbying activities and positively engage in third-party coalitions to drive more ambitious government climate policies. Specifically, Heather discussed the main challenges that industry associations typically face around climate policy advocacy and how we ensure they are not hampered by the ambitions of the "lowest common denominator". Must read! As we all continue to double down on our efforts to invest in reducing GHG emissions – this is a timely and welcome publication by Oxford Net Zero and BSI (an update to their earlier research) which assesses 37 (!!!!) voluntary resources used internationally (by non-state players) to guide net zero action. Great to see strengthened convergence amongst various tools and resources so we’re slowly all getting on the same page – but still so many gaps! So many areas could benefit from greater alignment!! With new explicit 😶 anti-greenwash guidance for Auditors in place, there's even more urgency for marketing and sustainability teams to get their #ClimateCommunications exactly right. If public organisations, such as councils or state-owned businesses, describe themselves as currently 'carbon positive', 'climate positive', 'net zero' or 'carbon neutral' in annual plans and sustainability reports, their Auditors will now not accept them without approval from the Auditor-General. The Office of the Auditor-General, New Zealand's new guidance also says Carbon reduction targets can expressed in a range of ways, eg: 🌏carbon neutral by 2050; 🌏 30% reduction in gross emissions by 2030; or 🌏30% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035. but they expect CLEAR disclosures that let a USER understand what the target means. Including: 🍃 which emissions are included and excluded (at a high level); 🍃 being clear whether the target is for gross emissions reductions or a target that can be met through the purchase of offsets; 🍃 where a target is described as a science-based target, then there must be clear explanation of what this means and how it has been determined (at a high level); 🍃 if the target involves third party certification, an explanation at a high level of the nature and scope of the certification; 🍃 saying if the entity has a plan for achieving the carbon reduction target or is working on a plan 🍃 explaining any technical terminology so it is understandable to a non-expert but informed reader. It reinforces good practice in #sustainabilitymarketing and #communications based on: ✅ Transparency ✅ Clarity ✅ Specifics ✅ Plain Language ✅ Audience fit A tip for hiring or procurement - we find these disciplines are more prevalent in #sciencecommunication than #PR or #advertising.
