Trench reinstatement, a controversial subject with a lot of the works out there being extremely competitive with low margins and generally low quality often failing in no time at all. £20,000+ for not wearing a harness... A massive fine, tbh. Extremely inconvenient... Now... imagine the fines for a scaffold collapse due to scaffold inspection negligence... more than fines being handed out, I would have thought... Heavy custodial sentences if said "negligence" causes a death. It would be devastating to most scaffold contractors, crippling them beyond repair. Imagine you have poured your heart and soul into building a scaffolding company up for 10+ years and in an instance... GONE! all those years wasted. It's heartbreaking to think of, and especially if it causes completely avoidable deaths. Like i've been saying for weeks and weeks now, there's LOTS of former experienced and capable scaffolders, now working as; "Scaffolding Consultants" - who can really help prevent this kind of thing from happening... Not just myself (of course, I welcome taking on more clients), but there's several other decent and capable ex-scaffolders like me out there trying to improve the safety and stop the complacency we're seeing all over. When did UK pile design go so wrong? Ground Engineering 11th June 2024 Paper about the new proposals for pile design given in FprEN 1997 Part 3. Hopefully this will generate discussion and comment both for and against. BSI committee B/526 need input as we are starting the drafting of the new UK National Annex which will set things in stone. These are my views and opinion and not official BSI or B/526. But it would be nice to know whether my opinion is mainstream, or whether most people are happy with the proposals given in the draft Second-Generation FprEN 1997 Part 3. Should our buildings have the equivalent of an MOT? My car has just been returned to me by the mechanics. They'd recently carried out a major service for and advised a few bits and pieces that weren't dangerous or impacting the way the car performed, but they were flagging that at some point in the future they could lead to something. The car had only recently passed its MOT with no advisories. I decided to get them looked at, albeit in two phases to spread the cost. My logic was if I kept on top of these things, in the long wrong the car would run better and maintenance costs should be lower - prevention is better than cure, right? This has got me thinking... why don't we have MOTs or the equivalent of servicing for our buildings? At home, I have my gas combi boiler serviced annually and as part of that they check the radiators throughout the house as well. I have my rainwater goods cleared and cleaned once all the leaves have fallen from the Oak trees that surround my house. I get the sceptic tank emptied and as part of that service the waste water pipes from the house are surveyed with a camera. I bought my house three and a half years ago and have had some electrical work done and on each occasion the electrician has issued a report telling me that things are okay. You could argue that the survey you have done when you buy a house is kind of an MOT, but having reflected on the one I had for this house, it's not, it wasn't really worth the paper it was written on. They didn't pick up that I have bats living in the loft - this wouldn't have changed a thing for me, as I think it's cool to share my house with them. It didn't pick up on the fact that the outside light on the front of the house wasn't earthed :😮, and it didn't pick up that the waste water pipe from the sink in the downstairs toilet simply goes through the wall and expels the water onto the driveway. We spend a lot of money on our buildings, a lot of money, a magnitude more than our cars, and our buildings typically cost more to run. Most of us spend far more time in our buildings that we do our cars as well, so why don't we maintain them in the same way? What if, every five or ten years we were required to have an MOT carried out on our buildings? This could flag maintenance work we perhaps didn't know needed looking at, it could suggest simple ways that we could improve the safety and efficiency of our buildings. The reports could form part of a 'state of our built environment' type of report and help shape Government policy. I'm rambling, it's a bit of a thought dump. Thought it worthy of sharing. Good morning all . Mid week already . Well I’m of into Manchester this morning . I’ve got to go and see a Doctor ( part of the process of getting my driving licence back ) following my ban 🤞all goes ok . Todays reading is ( Gods will , not ours ) A lot of you may think ahh bollocks we read this before and if you have and it didn’t sink in then read it again . How many of you keep fcking up thinking you know best day in day out ?? Tells you somthing dosent it . Lightbulb moment, have. Change of thinking . Say a few words why not try with this God grant me Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference. December 4 Gods will, not ours We know that if we pray for Gods will we will receive what is best for us, regardless of what we think. Basic Text, p. 46 = By the time we came to NA, our inner voices had become unreliable and self-destructive. Addiction had warped our desires, our interests, our sense of what was best for ourselves. Thats why its been so important in recovery to develop our belief in a Power greater than ourselves, something that could provide saner, more reliable guidance than our own. Weve begun learning how to rely on this Powers care and to trust the inner direction it provides us. As with all learning processes, it takes practice to pray only for knowledge of Gods will for us and the power to carry that out. The selfish, ego-driven attitudes we developed in our addiction are not cast off overnight. Those attitudes may affect the way we pray. We may even find ourselves praying something like, Relieve me of this character defect so I can look good. The more straightforward we are about our own ideas and desires, the easier it will be to distinguish between our own will and our Higher Powers will. Just for your information, God, we might pray, heres what Iwant in this situation. Nonetheless, I ask that your will, not mine, be done. Once we do this, we are prepared to recognize and accept our Higher Powers guidance. = Just for today: Higher Power, Ive learned to trust your guidance, yet I still have my own ideas about how I want to live my life. Let me share those ideas with you, and then let me clearly understand your will for me. In the end, let your will, not mine, be done. ❤️🙏💪 Jay
