Pret have announced the end of the "free coffee" subscription model. It is easy to understand why, with rising costs of goods and services, however it is disappointing for the consumer who got a fantastic deal using this service. Moving to 50% off, may increase profits adds so much friction for the consumer, where choice is abundant, I think this will hurt Pret in the long run. Retailer John Lewis is reinstating its "never knowingly undersold" price pledge, now extending to online sales for the first time and using AI to match prices with 25 top retailers. The revival of this policy aims to regain customer trust amidst a challenging period that led to job cuts and store closures. This move follows the High Street's struggles with the pandemic's impact and the shift towards online shopping, resulting in a net loss of 5,000 stores last year. Rival Marks & Spencer is also undergoing a significant restructuring, while Debenhams has transitioned to an online-only brand. This trend of collapsed retailers re-emerging as online platforms continues to evolve, with Asos recently announcing plans to sell a majority stake in Topshop.

'5 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬' On Sunday, three of us fly to the US for customer meetings that we believe are going to be defining. Despite Cambrionix being based in the UK, most of our business is in the US. Customers range all the way up from smaller businesses to $trillion Big Tech. We’ve nurtured these relationships over years - they are precious. Next week is an inflection point. I am travelling to discover the answer to these two questions: 1) 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲? I've learnt that Big Tech isn't all the same, it's obvious when interacting with two customers: 'Trillion $ Company A' - In this business, the engineering and the financial decision-making responsibility converge. - The individual that spends the money is personally connected to the operational result. - We communicate often. - It’s collaborative and both businesses work together as one team. Trillion $ Company B - In this business our fans in engineering have to pass decisions up, and up the chain, into an approval vacuum. For months. - Somebody somewhere is sitting on a decision. - Their people are crazy frustrated. As are we. It’s the antithesis of the dynamic business their C-Suite would like to believe they lead. The engineers we work with are as great and collaborative as in Company A, but B's machine is grinding us both down. We'll find out next week if the opportunity with Company B is going to fly, or will be stymied by bureaucracy? 2) 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 '𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧'? I've been driving Cambrionix on a partnership-led strategy where we co-create disruptive plans with partner companies that others won't be able to replicate. 1+1=3. I’m meeting a couple of the CEOs for the first time. Will they go ‘all-in’ with us? Will they 100% commit the energy and resources, top-down? We’re likely at slightly different stages of our own leadership journey. S/he might just not think I’m ‘the guy’ they want to bet on. And vice versa. We may click, we might not. But we’ll have to call it as we see it. It would be criminal to demand the teams spend 2025 and beyond busting their asses to deliver breakthrough innovation, if either of us fail to lead with total conviction.  As I settle down into my return airplane seat 7 days from now, Cambrionix may have taken off into the stratosphere, or we may have hit some delays at passport control.  Regardless, we will have crystal clarity, and that’s precious. Makes for exciting times, I’ll keep you posted! Cross those fingers for us 🤞

Two key challenges for the retail industry and the repair space are cost and scale, here's how we solve them at RE-STYLE. Susannah Streeter, Head of Money and Markets at Hargreaves Lansdown's perspective on Marks and Spencer's repair service launch was that "running a repair service of this scale won’t come cheap, even though it is partnering with SOJO, and there is some risk that it could unravel particularly if demand exceeds expectations." RE-STYLE does it differently. In two less than two minutes, retail customers can order a repair with RE-STYLE's network of expert tailors. Our decentralised network enables retailers to be connected with suppliers that match their price point, keeping costs low and allowing demand to be met at a nationwide scale. We are sadly giving up privacy, one “convenient” step at a time. The news about UK pubs rolling out digital IDs for age checks is another example of how convenience often wins over privacy. At first, it sounds like a win. No more fumbling for your driving license. Just a quick scan on your phone, and you're in. But here’s the thing: who’s keeping track of that data? Every time we rely on digital systems, we leave behind a trail of data. And with that comes the very real risk of breaches, leaks, or even misuse. and it’s worth asking: - How is the data being stored? - Who gets access to it? - And what happens when (not if) there’s a breach?
