There are 3 key areas where lawyers can add value in terms of implementing AI; - mitigating & managing risks - evaluating and implementing third party contracts - being point of contact to explain implementation process & communicate that to customers ✳️ Lawyers can be very instrumental in the design & development phase of generative AI - a lot of crucial decisions are made very early on so in order to add value you need to be involved in the project from the start & have a seat at the table ✳️ Do a lap around the track first! Work with the project team to review the product first. Early experimentation can be very critical to develop the product further & understand how the tech works. Ask the team for a visual demonstration of the product to understand the various layers ✳️ If you're a lawyer who's come from private practice with very high standards of delivery, it's important to understand the areas where you can take more risks, particularly where product delivery is very fast ✳️ As a lawyer, your job is about risk - yet in a scale up, the failure to innovate can kill a company. It's about balancing the risk with the commercial drivers of the company. Sometimes the biggest risk is NOT innovating with AI ✳️ Brainstorm about potential AI risks & incorporate that into your risk register (then delegate to the approrpriate team!) ✳️ AI is an amplification tool & an amazing opportunity to amplify the impact & reach for legal teams. Hugely exciting this. Multi-model GenAi solutions aimed at significantly reducing the cost of document review in transactional, contentious and privacy work. Maybe some controversial claims in terms of where this may lead to, but we're seeing sufficient use cases and hard evidence in live matters, to point to this being the future and pretty game-changing. I am a big believer in utilising cost control levers while still ensuring good outcomes and quality work. IMHO there are many levers that are under-recognised and under-utilised that do have an impact. Matter RFPs is one of them. Directing certain types of work to the right type of law firm (think mid-tier firms) is another. Also, prioritise working with law firm partners that manage budgets well.
