Have you read our Island new Visitor Economy Strategy? Probably not, but it was released at the end of last year and very much drives a focus to grow our Island’s Visitor Economy once again. It’s a comprehensive document that points out the issues and challenges and then focuses on what can be done for us all to see this potential success. We are pleased that a significant focus on growth is through events. Not just any events either but ones that showcase our island in its best light through unique inimitable products and experiences and throughout the year. At Lido Jersey, we’re pleased to deliver all of this as one of the most unique coastal event spaces in the UK with a history that is totally inimitable. Each of our guests that choose to get married at Lido, celebrate at Lido, have Corportate Events & Seminars at Lido etc. add to that rich and incredible history. We are pleased that a number of years ago the Tourism Development Fund approved for us to add some dehumidification and heating to the building to expand the operating season and change out fire doors to increase the occupancy as well. This enables us to accommodate 240 guests internally, 9 months a year. Small steps each time, but if we all work together to protect what we have and build where we can, we will without a doubt, once again see a vibrant visitor economy on our Island. Another bone of contention for parts of the industry has been the introduction of a licensing regime for short-term letting accommodation providers. The Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) has campaigned vociferously against the system, arguing that the cost and complexities involved will drive many providers out of the industry. Asked if she recognises those concerns, Ms Miller replied: “The self-catering sector in Scotland offers a unique proposition, and we have seen strong visitor intent for that type of accommodation. Clearly, we attract different types of visitors to Scotland and not all will stay in a hotel, particularly those visitors that are longer stay, basing themselves in one location, or because they are bringing family and friends. “I want to ensure that we have offer diversity of accommodation types because we are an inclusive country, and we attract all types of visitors who are looking for different holiday experiences. That is important. “I would say, globally, we have seen growth in demand for that type of accommodation and I think we have seen in Scotland new types of unique accommodation in that sector, your glamping pods and various other things, so we have a really strong offer. From a VisitScotland point of view we want to obviously retain that strong offer. “We don’t yet have definitive data on the impact of the regulation of the sector. The levy would start at zero for the first return flight in 12 months and rise by €100 for each return trip, with surcharges for longer distances and first class travel. ⭐ Direct train link between Paris and Berlin to start in December A direct train linking Paris and Berlin is to start operations next month, fulfilling a long-held promise from both governments. The service, which will launch on December 16, will see one train per day go between the two cities, via Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, and Frankfurt. ⭐ Barcelona is turning subway trains into power stations Barcelona is transforming its subway system into a power source by using regenerative braking technology to fuel electric trains, station facilities, and even electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the city. This approach not only cuts down on energy waste but also feeds into a growing network of EV chargers, helping the city’s broader push for sustainable transport. ⭐ London's low-emission zone got kids out of cars and onto their feet A study found that 40% of kids in London's ultra-low emissions zone switched from car rides to walking or biking within a year of the policy's start. Researchers say this shift could combat childhood obesity and improve both mental and physical health. ⭐ Campaigners call for unlimited ‘climate card’ UK rail pass Greenpeace, which commissioned a study from the non-profit transport think tank Greengauge21, believe that allowing people around the UK unlimited train travel for a flat fee could generate an additional 122m rail trips a year, which would save 40m car journeys and reduce emissions by about 380,000 tonnes of carbon. UK Nightclub Sector Faces Unprecedented Decline: 32.7% Drop Since 2020 The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) has revealed troubling figures, showing a 32.7% drop in the UK’s nightclub sector since March 2020. This equates to 405 venue closures, with the number of nightclubs falling from 1,240 to just 835 by November 2024. While there was some recovery during the Golden Quarter (Halloween to New Year), the sector remains fragile, facing rising costs, tax hikes, and economic uncertainty. The NTIA is urgently calling for tax relief in the Spring Budget to prevent further closures and job losses. The tourism sector has been experiencing a fairly benign insolvency environment over the past 12 months. However, a recent failure of a large tour operator in Europe,may send ripples across the industry and is an indicator that conditions are not entirely serene. This recent insolvency pointed to booking levels “falling well short of expectations” a sign that demand issues remain prevalent for the industry.
