FareShare UK has launched our pre election Manifesto shaped by business, third sector and academics. The outcome is for a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable UK but also promises tangible benefits. If implemented, it would significantly reduce food waste, support communities in need, and foster a more sustainable food system. The manifesto has been shaped by business, third sector and academics. https://lnkd.in/euTJ_eWC

This article shows the difference strong local political leadership can have in finding compromise through the noise and distraction of a vocal minority. We need to find a way to communicate what is right in the long term for places and communities, not just maintain the status quo to win easy votes in the short term. As we descend into what will be months of UK election campaigning I hope our politicians can be more Parisian in their outlook. https://lnkd.in/eYq6cJjX

💡 The very smart folks at Nesta published new research this week on what people think about different #netzero policies 👇 Here are three key things we at Climate Outreach think the findings mean for how we talk about #climate 1️⃣ Keep highlighting widespread support for leadership on climate and nature policies - and especially that people love clean energy ➡ This research echoes loads of others: people support action on climate and nature. Our #BritainTalksClimate found 60% want to speed up or continue at the current pace in efforts to reach net zero and 62% think reaching NZ will be good for the UK. And people support the UK government committing to spending billions of pounds on expanding renewable energy. 2️⃣ Don’t fuel the idea that tackling climate change is all about more hardship and sacrifice - actually, it's about creating warmer homes with cheaper bills, creating new good jobs and protecting our planet for our kids ➡ Of course communicators need to be honest about the scale of ambition and change needed across society. But it is wrong to suggest that people need to pick between a healthy planet and a good, affordable life. It’s not true and it invites backlash, undermining support for climate action. 3️⃣ It is non-negotiable that the transition is fair, and feels fair. We need to listen, respond genuinely to and recognise that for a lot of people change can be scary, and times are very hard. ➡ Governments must make transition fair, taking responsibility for investment and funding, and as communicators we can talk about what governments and businesses are already doing, and what they can do more of. There is a story here of steady support for ambitious progress. Let's keep telling it. https://lnkd.in/e-Ft4HwQ

Fascinating discussion at the BBC Climate Creatives conference today on using storytelling and content to engage audiences on what is unarguably the biggest issue of our time. Shocking to hear from Jodie Bond that 98% of news coverage on climate change is negative 😐 And from the ever insightful Chris Packham on how news editors are failing us by only covering the actions, and rarely the message, behind climate activism and protest. As communicators and campaigners our challenge is to get that balance between telling the truth about the urgency of environmental issues, alongside the positive stories of people creating change. And all in a way that cuts through the news media landscape. There's no magic formula, but in my experience our starting points have to be.. - strong framing of the problem (which meets the audience where they are) - telling stories of both the impacts of the problem AND solutions - and practical, manageable actions people can take to start making a difference Would love to hear thoughts on what's worked for you...

Interesting editorial today on the (absence of) #climate in the #GeneralElection debate It calls, among other things, for politicians to raise their ambition and for the next UK government to "face down the cynics and lobbyists." I have great news for the next government. Your voters agree. Climate Outreach's Britain Talks Climate found that people are crying out for more bold leadership - they want politicians to chart a path we can all follow to net zero. They want this to feel like a collective mission - like creating the NHS - not something we are left to face alone. And people want to be part of it. There is an urgent need to involve people in this transition in a way we simply haven't yet. Properly informing, listening to, engaging with people on #climate is a massive opportunity. We want to try and help whoever forms the next government get this right. It's too important not to. https://lnkd.in/gUMuYNyP

This is why I left Labour 🥀 Unlike Labour, the Green Party decides its policy democratically and allows you to view it in full online at any time (policy.greenparty.org.uk) 🗳️ Our progressive approach and refusal to accept funding from dodgy donors means we can focus on delivering the best solutions for our communities 💚 I came into this campaign with a plan. A plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, and I have stuck by it. On day one, I committed to ending roughsleeping, kickstarting a Green Industrial Revolution, establishing citizens assemblies, and much more 💪🏼 Labour didn't have a plan then and they still don't now, just look at our submissions into the elections booklet via the link in my bio. I have provided a full plan for you whilst Labour just about managed to conjure up five meaningless sentences 🙄 Throughout this campaign, as I have gained the support of voters, Labour have sought to adopt my policies, hollow them out, and say something that sounds vaguely similar. They are scared of the support for the Greens and are abusing their position as the self-declared 'main opposition' to stifle progressive campaigns 💔 If you want Green, then you have to vote Green 💚 Labour have shown that they don't want to work with progressives but instead keep the establishment in power at any cost. Keir Starmer has u-turned time and again, we cannot trust Labour to deliver on our priorities 👎🏼 #chesterfield #derbyshiredales #derbyshire #derby #nottingham #notts #nottinghamshire #mansfield #citizensassemblies #democracy #green #greenparty #labour #keirstarmer #eastmidlands #eastmidlandsmayor #frankformayor

Dear Keir Starmer...👇 Congratulations on the new job! Now it really is time for change to begin: it’s time the UK government got serious about philanthropy. I’m talking about ensuring the ultra-wealthy give back in a way that makes a difference (while also paying taxes). 💷 The number of billionaires in the UK has reached record highs over the last few years, and there remains huge untapped philanthropic potential. 🌏 Giving has not kept up with wealth generation, and our average giving levels (and sizes) are much lower than other countries (e.g. our friends across the pond). It's time we stopped being outshined. 😵 The wealthiest 1% in the UK holds a whopping 23% of the country's wealth (World Inequality Lab). Imagine the impact if they were encouraged to give. 💪 We're talking about transformative changes to our civic society—education, employment, healthcare, and communities that thrive rather than just survive. Your government has the power to foster a culture of giving. It’s not about charity; it’s about investing in the UK’s future. Warmly, A frustrated but hopeful Philanthropy Advisor! #EconomicInequality #Philanthropy #UKpolitics

What is the status of social and impact investment in the UK? How might government best work with impact investors to tackle current environmental and social challenges; including children's care and housing? Does additionality matter? Very impressive report from BIT about the public support for Net Zero policies. We know that behaviour change is an important pathway to reaching Net Zero - and we also know there are real barriers that people face, such as cost, convenience, or access to trustworthy information. Effective, inclusive and considered policy is one way to unlock these barriers, but the support from the public is essential if these are to create the intended behaviour change. Read about the recommendations on how to do this in the report!

👀 Well, this is interesting. Over 250 businesses, financial institutions and NGOs represented in Business For A Plastics Treaty coalition have signed the Bridge to Busan Declaration. 📣 The group "urges policymakers to ensure plastic production remains in scope for the treaty" The declaration calls on governments to commit to: 1️⃣ achieve sustainable levels of production of primary plastic polymers; 2️⃣ ensure transparency in the production of primary plastic polymers, and 3️⃣ agree to a global objective regarding the sustainable production of primary plastic polymers. 🤔 Given who is in this Coalition*, it becomes an increasingly unsustainable position for countries to oppose dealing with production in the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations. *of course I take all corporate commitments with a very large grain of salt but let's not underestimate the power of a collective industry voice calling for dealing with this critical issue https://lnkd.in/enYzcfw7

The absence of honest discussion of public finances has been one of the great and disgraceful flaws in the election campaigns so far. Both main parties are committed to financial rules that will require reductions in public spending of about £20B pa. Neither will tell us what they would cut. Neither will contemplate higher taxes on the higher paid and those with wealth. The Independent picks out the Greens as the one party that's honest about the choice we face. This isn't the only flaw. Also absent has been discussion about the results of Brexit and the increasingly urgent need to reduce global carbon emissions enough to keep the temp rise below 2 degrees. Are the main parties in an alternate reality?

“Climate change needs to extricate itself from the 'woke' label, not by repudiating or belittling social issues, but by recognising how different issues often require precisely targeted responses. There will be instances and audiences where it makes sense to try and tackle climate and social issues in conjunction. But there are also instances and audiences where conflating the language of climate action and progressive politics makes it harder to build the 'big tent' coalition required to normalise and accelerate decarbonisation efforts.” Cracking end of year essay from James Murray (Plus featuring some Strategic Climate Risks Initiative work on derailment)

To mark World Environment Day, MRS has today launched a new sustainability pledge for the sector - the MRS Climate Pledge (replacing the MRS Net Zero Pledge). Developed in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the new Pledge is designed to enable research businesses to take positive action towards achieving net zero in the shortest possible timeframe. The MRS Climate Pledge focuses on 4 key areas: 1) Tracking - measuring carbon emissions 2) Reduction - reducing emissions per employee 3) Transparency - reporting reductions in our Annual Tracking Survey 4) Collaboration - working together on reducing sector emissions The Pledge also features a helpful Climate Action list to help guide your organisation on the key steps to take meaningful action in reducing carbon emissions. All signees of the previous MRS Net Zero Pledge have been consulted with on the changeover. The new pledge will help provide current signees with a clearer roadmap on getting to net zero. See all the details on the new Climate Pledge https://lnkd.in/eMiqmRrp

🌍 Launch 🌍 We are thrilled to announce the digital launch of the #LambethClimatePartnership platform! This new platform will highlight the vast range of climate initiatives happening across the borough and create opportunities for more organisations to join this crucial mission. It includes a visual dashboard that tracks the borough’s progress towards our climate goals, ensuring transparency and accountability. Founded by 12 leading organisations in Lambeth, the partnership represents key sectors such as health, housing, culture, education, and skills. It is designed for organisations from all sectors that are committed to incorporating #climateaction into their objectives, operations, logistics, building management, staff activities, and overall impact on community health and well-being. Our aim is to foster cross-sector #collaboration, enabling the sharing of knowledge and expertise to drive Lambeth towards its #netzero targets. A big thanks to the climate team – particularly Fiona Hart, Emily Hirst, Georgia Faid, and Cassidy Travis – and our partners for their tremendous effort in developing this platform and showcasing the incredible climate action happening across the borough. Really interesting inclusive hiring practice for this job. Four ways of answering the application questions: written, PowerPoint, audio, video. Such a great idea - we make "be really good at writing" a major hurdle in most job application processes even if it's only a small part of the actual job. If you were applying for this job, which option would you pick? I think I'd do audio!

Our planet, our survival as human beings, is always a loan. This is a phenomenal blog that sums it up neatly - old social constructs are killing the climate. Desperately trying to spin budgetary plates as a disabled working single mum mean I cannot afford to do better on a single income. My house is old, my car is old, my boiler is old…and I am in paralysis over what I want to do as a good ancestor, and what is realistic financially for one person. Yet Money is creatable. It is a construct, it is a contract. If banks can find created loans to invest in business for return, why can’t we create a loan to bridge these social environmental inequalities? Its not just a monetary loan, it is a loan to children of a clean planet- one that they loan to their children and grandchildren.

Rebuilding rural ecosystems. On this week's Planet Positive, (Tuesday 30th April, 9am PT, 5pm BST) we will meet Colleen Dick founder of Rainbird Villages which provide the platform and technologies for full circle Ecosystem Regeneration. Join here: https://lnkd.in/gfDJtTS8 Colleen set up the Rainbird demonstration villages to showcase all the best regenerative functions and technologies in one place, to create a healthy, happy, thriving community. www.rainbirdut.com & www.rainbirddev.com. Colleen Dick: has an MS in Human Nutrition and Biochemistry. Multiple entrepreneurial start-ups and exits. After several decades of nutrition consultation, she realised that food is only as healthy as the soil in which it is grown. her concern grew as she saw patients who were becoming sicker, younger. Seeing that all of the issues: health, agriculture, government, economics, education, and culture were all connected in a gigantic web, she set out to make changes in microcosm, one village at a time. She says: "Most of the time, we don't see the connections, but only the problems which manifest one at a time. Until we see whole systems and their relatedness, cycles and directions, we cannot ultimately fix what is wrong" Monette Stephens, Antoinette Vermilye (she/her), Sophie Edmonds, Harriette Brainard, Paul Cayford, Joshua Hughes, Hannah Apricot Eckberg, Shelley von Strunckel, Rani Singh, Edward Thorne, Marco Frazier, Sammy Leslie, Colleen Dick #regenerativesystems, #agriculture, #health, #education, #technology, #wholesystems
