ScottishPower(Iberdrola) subsidiary SP Energy Networks has unveiled a £10.6 billion investment in the UK transmission network after submitting its plans to the Ofgem regulator. SP Energy Networks plans to double its transmission workforce, creating 1,400 new directly employed jobs and supporting another 11,000 in the supply chain. The firm said the investment will “help rewire Britain” and deliver critical electricity infrastructure, including 12 new major substations in Scotland.

A US company has signed the first significant deal to supply liquefied natural gas to Ukraine, in a move designed to bolster its energy security and reduce Moscow’s energy dominance in eastern Europe. The move by US exporter Venture Global is the latest step towards meeting a big goal of the Biden administration — to increase energy exports to eastern Europe and in the process reduce Russia’s power in the region following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While Europe was already the largest recipient of US liquefied natural gas exports, none have ever been purchased directly by Ukraine before. It comes as the region scrambles to wean itself off Russian pipeline imports, just months ahead of the expiration of a five-year arrangement with Russia’s Gazprom to pipe gas through Ukraine in transit to Europe. Our Kharkiv-based team at Smart Energy Group (Oil&Gas) has resumed gas production after unblocking of licenses, albeit on a smaller scale for now. After more than a year of forced downtime and a month of complex preparatory work, the Vasyshchevsky field is once again producing. This is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the entire Smart Energy team, particularly, in Kharkiv. While this is positive news, we still face significant challenges. A year of downtime has impacted well productivity, and we are currently producing at only half of the previous level. Furthermore, the damage caused by last year’s attacks on our facilities will require time and investment to repair. The biggest loss has been to the state, which missed out on 1.65 billion UAH in tax revenues and 195 million cubic metres of gas. After a year of lost opportunities, the government has now lifted the block on production. At Smart Holding, alongside Smart Energy, we remain committed to restoring production and helping to meet the country’s energy needs, especially with the winter season fast approaching. However, recovering what has been lost will not be straightforward. This situation should remind us that constructive dialogue between business and the state is crucial. The international rating agency Fitch Ratings has affirmed the long-term issuer ratings of the Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC in both foreign and local currencies at «BBB/Stable». Fitch highlights DBK's critical role as one of Kazakhstan's key development institutions, tasked with financing non-resource sectors to reduce the country's reliance on raw material extraction. In the coming years, according to the agency's forecasts, DBK is expected to place greater emphasis on supporting industrial, environmental and infrastructure projects. Additionally, the Bank's long-term ratings on senior unsecured debt obligations have been reaffirmed at «BBB». It is worth noting that DBK continues to maintain ratings aligned with Kazakhstan's sovereign ratings: BBB- with a «stable» outlook from S&P and Baa2 with a «positive» outlook from Moody's.

DAILY MARKET REPORT - 04/11/2024 Whilst the market held on to the positive news surrounding a deal to flow Azeri gas through Ukraine when the Russian transit deal ends at the end of the year in Fridays session, it remains unclear as to whether a deal is actually agreed or not – with rumours suggesting there are, or have been, talks going on whilst others deny there is any deal done.      Whilst the market waits for confirmation either way, it enjoyed a downward session on Friday. Temperature forecasts for the coming days and weeks showing warmer than seasonal normal which may also give some confidence to the market. Friday saw the TTF Front Month contract settle at €39.18 (from €40.59) and the NBP Front Month contract at 99.18p (from 103.36p). No unplanned outage this morning and we see a flow level at 339mcm (335) Russian nominations showing Velke Kapusany at 42.1mcm (42.5) and Sudzha at 42.0mcm (42.4). Nord Stream remains unavailable. EU gas storage showing at 95.21% full as per AGSI+. LNG vessels due to arrive in UK next couple of weeks is 4. This morning we see the Front Month TTF contract at €39, NO CHANGE to the previous settlement. Denmark’s Energinet reiterated its commitment to the €2bn hydrogen pipeline to Germany despite a 3-year delay and is working towards a conditional investment decision in Q1 2025. The approval of the project, however, is subject to capacity reservations by hydrogen producers and offtakers. An initial 800MW capacity commitments are required to push ahead with phase 1 and subsequent increments leading up to 1.9GW for the final phase. Uniper has expressed interest in importing green hydrogen to Germany from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’s 1GW facility in Denmark using the pipeline. Last month, Equinor scrapped plans for a similar pipeline to Germany - which had an estimated cost of €3bn - due to lack of demand.
