Trying to get your health tech solution into the NHS? Buckle up, it’s a long road, but here’s your roadmap..... We’ve been working with companies to navigate the complexities of getting their tech adopted by the NHS, and it’s clear that persistence and a clear plan are key. Here’s a quick guide based on what we’ve learned along the way: 1. Figure out the real need If your solution doesn’t solve a genuine problem for the NHS, it’s going to be a tough sell. Do your research upfront. That’s field research as well. 2. Clinical evidence is non-negotiable No solid clinical trials, no traction. Simple as that. Gather data, prove your solution works. 3. Build relationships with the right people It’s all about the stakeholders. Start engaging with NHS Trusts and Health Innovation Networks early. You need to have a BD mindset and start making those connections they pay off. 4. Tailor your solution to NHS workflows Don’t expect to just drop in your tech. You’ll need to adapt it to fit NHS needs and systems. 5. Understand the procurement process This one’s a marathon. Get familiar with the ins and outs of NHS procurement—it’s long, but persistence pays off. Breaking into the NHS isn’t easy, but with the right strategy, you can get there. AI seems to be everywhere. The Labour government is relying on 'digital tech' to transform the NHS. But outside of the big tech companies such as Google, Apple, Meta etc who are currently focusing on integrations with their existing services, how will this filter down to real-life applications for the average person? For many people, the talk of AI is still a fairly abstract concept. One useful example, 'Olivia' has been launched by Tempus AI and in their own words: "Olivia is an AI-enabled personal health concierge to empower individuals to holistically organize, manage, and proactively take control of their own health data. Olivia, which is currently only available to beta users, leverages generative AI to provide patients and their caregivers personal, concierge-style support in managing their health". 🔔 Funding Alert for UK SMEs 🔔 The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) launched a £7.4m pilot scheme yesterday to subsidise the costs of AI training for SMEs in the UK. Eligible businesses are able to apply for for funds to cover up to 50% of their AI training costs. To be eligible, you must: - Be registered and operate in the UK - Employ between 1-249 employees in the UK - Have been operating for at least 1 year - Be able to match-fund 50% of the cost of the training You can get between £2,500 and £10,000 in grants, depending on your business size. You'll be responsible for finding your own AI training provider (*massive, dramatic cough and lots of pointing at myself*). Applications are now open, but it's a short pilot window - they'll close on 31 May. Peter Kyle has done a great job commissioning Matt Clifford to deliver the UK's AI action plan. No better person to do this & the support from the #DSIT tech board, who's focus on driving the UK as an AI leader, is impressive. Under 14: "Accurately assess the size of the skills gap. Current estimates are imprecise and outdated; the last government-funded AI labour market survey was in 2020 and the Unit for Future Skills’ jobs and skills dashboard, while a step in the right direction, still uses supply data from 2019.[footnote 6] The success of the following recommendations depends on accurately understanding the skills gap, and so government must make efforts to come to a concrete and up-to-date number." This is going to be a critical element of the journey for #ai in the #uk & will need significant mindset change & training investment. Under 19: "Ensure its lifelong skills programme is ready for AI. AI will continue to change the labour market, though exactly how and when is unclear. What is certain is while some jobs will be replaced by AI, many will be augmented - and an unknown number will be created. Government should ensure there are sufficient opportunities for workers to reskill, both into AI and AI-enabled jobs and more widely. The UK should also learn and adopt best practice from other countries who are preparing their skills systems for the long-term impacts of AI. Singapore, for example, developed a national AI skills online platform with multiple training offers. South Korea is integrating AI, data and digital literacy throughout its education pipelines through an AI curriculum and a variety of training and education programmes. Skills England and the independent Curriculum and Assessment Review present an opportunity to consider the merit of such approaches in our system." With the UK public sector, how will members of the public have a consistent experience if each public sector body interprets these principles differently? Those are the 10 principles in the Generative AI Framework for HMG. Principle 1: You know what generative AI is and what its limitations are Principle 2: You use generative AI lawfully, ethically and responsibly Principle 3: You know how to keep generative AI tools secure Principle 4: You have meaningful human control at the right stage Principle 5: You understand how to manage the full generative AI lifecycle Principle 6: You use the right tool for the job Principle 7: You are open and collaborative Principle 8: You work with commercial colleagues from the start Principle 9: You have the skills and expertise needed to build and use generative AI Principle 10: You use these principles alongside your organisation’s policies and have the right assurance in place https://lnkd.in/eDXvWrKf These are largely common sense—they are principles. 🩺 The King's Speech stirred hope for a healthier UK – but will the necessary investments materialise? Months ago, the King's address set out bold promises: reduced NHS waiting times, enhanced mental health support, and a strong focus on preventive care. Yet, with £1.3 billion of tech funding now off the table, there seems to be a discrepancy between the lofty goals and the willingness to make the necessary investments in technology. While the Darzi Review highlighted how technology could transform healthcare, the lack of investment threatens to leave us stuck with outdated infrastructure. The dream of tech-driven, proactive healthcare is at risk, but it doesn't have to be. 🚀 It’s up to all of us—founders, innovators, and policymakers—to ensure that digital health and preventive care stay at the forefront of our national agenda. We map a lot of frontier economy sectors.. over 400 of them in fact but we’ve never been asked to map the FemTech sector.. This seems crazy to me, this sector serves 51% of the population (and those that care about them) so is undeniably huge, yet we hear stories of innovators in this sector being told that the menopause isn’t a big market 🤦‍♂️ and worse.. The evidence points to an investment community that is almost exclusively male only investing in markets that affect men or that men understand.. this needs to change. So we’ve taken a first step, led by the women in our company but totally supported by our men. We want to shine a light on the innovators, entrepreneurs and market opportunity for investors and the business community as a whole that this sector represents. It starts with mapping and making this data available.. but it’s just the start. We need to complete this work and track the evolution of this sector, change perceptions and celebrate its success.. it is growing rapidly already, imagine what its potential may be!!

🚨 New Onward science & tech report from Ben Greenstone and me. Regulatory red tape is suffocating startups before they can grow and is hampering UK growth. Igniting Innovation sets out how the UK can lead in emerging tech regulation to boost innovation. Regulators are painfully slow, they're overstretched, and they lack coordination. UK startup, Space Forge, had to consult ELEVEN different regulators to launch. An AI legal startup would have to navigate at least 6 different regulators to get approval. This complexity is killing growth. The UK can set itself apart in the global tech race by embracing pro-innovation regulation. But we need to get serious about reforming our regulators. Sir Keir Starmer UK PM and government today announce throwing the full weight 🏋️‍♀️of UK 🇬🇧 government behind AI industry. Read on for summary and my analysis. Great to hear PM saying “for too long we have allowed blockers to control the public discourse and get in the way of growth in the (AI) sector” The PM says “AI industry needs a government that is on their side, one that won’t sit back and let opportunities slip through its fingers”. Yes China and US are investing heavily in AI. Great to hear the PM say the “plan will make Britain the world leader (in AI)” UK has the ability to be a world leader given the talent and global leading sectors like financial services and the creative sectors. UK government are agreeing to take forward all 50 recommendations set out in game-changing AI Opportunities Action Plan (THANKS 🥰). It includes: - Data accessibility through a National Data Library making high-impact datasets available to AI researchers. This will help with our AI inters working on AI use cases. - Talent Development 👩‍🏫🧑‍🏫 including plans to train tens of thousands of additional AI professionals by 2030. We will turbo charge our AI learning to support this. What this space for some announcements. PM and the UK government refer to IMF estimates that – if AI is fully embraced – it can boost productivity by as much as 1.5% a year in UK that if fully realised, could be worth up to an average £47 billion to the UK each year over a decade. We’ve been hooking through these for a while and showing where and how these can be realised in industries, professionals and organisations. Government and PM say AI can transform the lives of working people and even give examples of AI use cases ranging from helping speed up building planning to reducing admin for teachers so they can get on with teaching children to spotting potholes to improve roads! Announcements of £14 billion and 13,250 jobs committed by private tech firms following the AI Action Plan Dedicated AI Growth Zones to speed up planning for AI infrastructure Plans for public sector to use AI to spend less time doing admin and more time delivering the services working people rely on We’ve done work or discussed AI with UK government departments and UK industry and professional bodies and delighted to hear the PM and UK government are getting behind the AI industry and looking forward to being part and supporting the UK AI Action Plan particularly in learning. UK as a nation should continue to be pioneers and run with AI. This is the global race of our lives. Trillions of pounds at stake. Some countries will make AI breakthroughs and export them and others will buy and import them. Will Britain be maker AI. UK is the nation that gave birth to the modern computing, Turing and the World Wide Web. 🇬🇧Britain will be one of the great AI superpowers.💪🏼 UK is already No. 1 in Europe for AI investment. Determined that the UK becomes the best place to start and scale an AI business. UK to have a gold standard data access regime. Government shouldn’t just focus on safety and leave rest to market but government has a responsibility to make AI work. Talked of blunt truth that we needed to be bolder in public service in use of AI. Wants to totally rewire government and believes AI is the way. It will make public service more human by freeing up time to serve Increase public sector compute by 20x through super computers. Gave example of AI use cases like how AI helps Dr.s pinpoint exactly the source of a stroke when time is critical to life and help save hours of time lost from missed appointments in health service. Personalised medicine based on DNA and many more. There will be teething problems but can’t loose sight of the potential. Understand change at this speed and scale worrying that is why UK is also taking lead in AI safety. A new energy council to cost and solutions for the energy demand of AI sector. Pro growth and innovation when it comes to regulation of AI. But also British values of democracy and rule of law. Building safe, efficient and aligned AI that challenges the boundaries of machine consciousness should be the UK's Manhatten/Apollo project. We don't need nuclear if we leverage the wealth of UK academic research into Neuromorphic computing. We have world leading experts in consciousness as well as an incredible pedigree in the next generation of AI (way beyond foundation models). It would be a travesty if the UK were not leading the way in this space, which in turn raises and enables perhaps the most profound set of questions that we are facing as a species.
