Non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) based satellite services with its high throughput low latency wireless broadband services and expanding range of direct-to-device capabilities that can serve even the remotest locations (including maritime, airborne and even in orbit) is shaking up the sector and giving rise to crucial commercialisation and spectrum regulatory issues. Industry recognises the need to foster greater access to spectrum for satellite services whilst balancing against the needs of other existing valuable spectrum access rightsholders. Further convergence between satellite and mobile broadband service providers, network operators and device manufacturers is leading to calls for revisiting regulatory frameworks to ensure rules are fit for purpose. One thing that is for certain is that change through technology evolution will continue apace. What will further advancements in NGSO capabilities mean for fixed line access, transmission and mobile networks? With all these developments and milestones, 2024 is set to be significant in shaping regulation for years to come for satellite providers and stakeholders in this market. Watch this space. Random Sunday Thoughts #107 1. It was a whirlwind week, with a bit more "noise in the news" than our usual modus operandi of operating discreetly and stealth. On Tuesday, DN Journal broke the story of the price of our Hilco Digital Assets with larry fischer sale of Chat*com, a very rare instance of the price of a deal we oversaw coming out. If you have not seen it, here it is again, https://lnkd.in/ebJE_awe I discussed in last weeks Random Sunday Thoughts, I am typically very pro confidentiality but in this case, I believe there is some value in the $15.5M price of the Chat*com deal being discussed openly. I can also confirm that we have an even bigger deal that happened a few weeks ago in March, and look forward to being able to elaborate more down the road. We are working on some really exciting transactions and strategic initiatives that will be made more public in the coming months. 2. It was also figured out this week that we oversaw the sale of FDX*com, https://lnkd.in/efmpmUyP. We have the most valuable portfolio of category defining and exact match domains that we are advising on or own including recent additions Candy*com, Nashville*com, and Eclipse*com. Hilco Digital Assets and I will be at NamesCon in June, kicking it off with a keynote talk followed by what will be an amazing and fun session with my friends and domain OG's Drew and Larry. 6. Alas, the NBA and NHL Playoffs are upon us. I admit it, as a Celtics lifelong season ticket holder and fan, I do not recall a season with higher expectations, where the entire legacy of this team and its stars are on the line and being measured. It is a lot of pressure, and that is never a great recipe for a championship. There is some very real competition, especially in the West and what would be the Finals. The journey begins today. I am excited for it. Last night, the Bruins began their quest for the Stanley Cup. Last year, the B's had the expectations the Celts have this year, and it backfired hard, the pressure definitely being part of that derailment. This year, the expectations are less. 🚁 Remote ID Testing Insights: SwellPro and DroneTag 🚁 We recently conducted Remote ID testing on the SwellPro and DroneTag systems. SwellPro initially self-certified that their drones supported Remote ID (RID), but later admitted via email that the feature is still forthcoming. Additionally, the DroneTag RID performed poorly, with a detection range of just 20 meters—falling far short of the expectations. Our findings highlight important concerns about the effectiveness of current RID solutions. Satellites are the backbone of modern maritime transportation and logistics, they provide reliable communication across vast oceans, keeping crews safe and enabling efficient fleet management. Precise Navigation systems like GPS and GNSS ensure safe passage, improve route planning, and prevent collisions. On the other hand, IoT solutions allow remote monitoring of cargo conditions, optimizing logistics. However, this critical dependence on satellites creates vulnerabilities and operational risks, for example, communication networks, GPS navigation, and IoT systems are all potential targets for attackers. Also, attacks can disrupt communication, hinder navigation, and delay deliveries, impacting safety and causing financial losses. Of course, cybercriminals could exploit vulnerabilities to steal cargo. Ukraine has been the first war of its kind to combine open-source software with cutting-edge battlefield technology, harnessing commercial and military satellite imagery, drone technology, high and low sophistication cyber warfare, social media, open-source intelligence, uncrewed aerial and seaborne vehicles and information operations — as well as human and signals intelligence — at such incredible pace and scale. Most of all, it has underlined the imperative to adapt, experiment and innovate.

Ofcom's latest call for information regarding the use of spectrum for satellite or high altitude platform direct to device (D2D) services comes at a critical time. Satellite and high altitude platform technologies promise connectivity and performance to mobile handsets that until recently was only possible with terrestrial networks and/or specialised kit, driven by NGSO satellite network expansion and D2D technology miniaturisation. Consumers meanwhile face stubborn service gaps particularly in remote locations where terrestrial networks lack coverage. Tech companies and handset manufacturers are also seeking to leverage their platforms to provide better customer experience, including to offer services in places and in a manner not previously possible with traditional wireless services. AI startups captured 25 per cent of all UK venture capital funding in 2024, totalling $15.9bn (£12.8bn) – a sharp rise from $3.1bn (£2.5bn) four years ago. Balderton Capital’s latest data shows that 2024 was the second best year on record for AI investment in the UK. The sector’s value has more than doubled in that time to $236.9bn (£191bn). The VC firm also found 20 AI unicorns in the UK, including Wayve, Exscientia, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies.

WayFare Identifiers Inc (WFI) was founded at the request of four Federal Ministers, including our then Deputy Prime Minister. We developed technology that was tested by numerous official bodies in charge of Canada’s security, as well as US Homeland personnel & the UK’s port authorities. Not only were we ranked as the leading edge advancement for border security, specific to illicit trade & money laundering, our interface fully met the requirements that ArriveCAN was supposed to meet. Canadians need to demand answers on why the fully vetted WFI tech was refused the needed support when US Homeland approved border & port testing of our system. All CBSA has ever stated as their rationale is “We are not kingmakers”… something completely belied by the disclosures around GC Strategies. Then the CBSA’s overseer, the CRA, spent thousands of man-hours destroying WFI, despite their own SR&ED proving we had millions in losses, and despite proving those lost funds were the founder’s personal after-tax savings, and despite their own GST department proving we were pre-revenue. A completely non-taxable scenario. WFI was a highly trained technical team, so ask why a pre-COVID government administration was capable of seeing the need for and specifically calling for these capabilities… while today’s government is completely trashing Canada’s defences. It is because earlier administrations had not forgotten the failures leading up to that multi-national terrorist act on 911. An act that many of our enemies would see repeated given half a chance. But now Canada’s chief enemy is internal greed, and our external enemies are more deeply financed than ever… so they are buying their way into influence in Canada, and successfully lowering our defensive posture using our own career bureaucrats. Not only are our bureaucrats selling us out, they are are actively undermining our responsibilities in defending our allies. Allies who trust us. Here is the latest step our government is taking to lower Canada’s defensive posture further still… they are doing the opposite of WFI by making illicit trade & money laundering even more available for Organized Crime Groups (OCGs), and for the foreign powers that use OCG networks:

(remember the science of Thermal mass - the denser the thing the more thermal energy it can hold. Next. gaseous states are very NOT DENSE and in fact air is a not-dense matter. still with me). You put the sun direct to the pasta water (aka the ocean, earth, black tarmac climate scientists take alarmist measurements from); NEXT the air in the shade of the tree and right next to it in the hot sweltering sun. the same right. the same air. now go back and forth sun shade sun shade sun shade. right. ITS THE SUN STUPID. other plain things to think about Nuclear testing in oceans. hot. under ocean volcanoes. hot. but anyways maybe all you people take a flame to the air in your kitchen to fry your bug pancakes, soylent gate greens and hope the retained heat in the air does that cooking that way. I hate having to genuflect to cult stupidity.
