Government Unveils Ambitious Plan for Wylfa Mega-Nuclear Power Station The government has confirmed plans to pursue a third large-scale nuclear power plant following the Hinkley Point and Sizewell projects. On the 15th May the government committed to doubling the nuclear workforce as part of a new drive to secure the future of the UK’s thriving defence and civil nuclear industry... Green Skills Minister Amanda Solloway was joined the Minister for Defence Procurement James Cartlidge, as well as industry leaders – including UK Atomic Energy Authority Chief Operating Officer, Justin Kingsford – at an event for the signing of the Nuclear Skills Charter, committing members to revitalise the UK’s nuclear workforce by investing in young people who will deliver the biggest expansion of nuclear power in 70 years.   It comes as a new nuclear skills roadmap, published by the Nuclear Skills Taskforce, highlights the need for industry to recruit 5,000 new apprentices and 40,000 new skilled workers by the end of the decade – doubling the current hiring rate.    Justin Kingsford, UKAEA COO, said: “𝐴𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑠, 𝑠𝑜 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝 𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛. Last week, the Royal Academy of Engineering’s National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC), published their new report addressing “Rapid decarbonisation of the GB electricity system”.   They stressed the need for focus, such as that given to the vaccines task force, in driving the major infrastructure and system transformation that is intrinsic to reaching the government’s 2030 clean energy goals. Transmission timelines and planning, grid connection queue delays and supply chain constraints were all highlighted as priorities.     The report also looked at changes to a future energy system beyond 2030, that requires action this decade, including expanding carbon capture and storage projects and achieving progress on hydrogen transmission.   Conrad Energy is proud to be a part of that solution, investing in batteries and exploring the opportunities offered by hydrogen. The full report can be found at https://lnkd.in/eSiVxujn #energy #decarbonisation #energytransition

📣 New blog: UK Non-CO2 Work to Contribute Towards Future MRV Requirements From 1st January 2025, the European Commission is planning to introduce a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) requirement for aviation which will soon require aircraft operators to monitor and report a wider set of emissions including non-CO2 effects. Recognising aircraft climate effects are broader than carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, Adam Morton, Head of Technology – Sustainability & Strategy shares how this follows on from the ATI’s Non-CO2 Technologies Roadmap published in March of this year. "At a time when the whole industry is asking how the necessary gaps in understanding can be closed in time to meet an ambitious EU timeline, work funded by the ATI and NERC is expected to make a major contribution over the longer term. It is only by investing in sensor technologies, data collection and modelling that aerospace can achieve the necessary confidence in future non-CO2 MRV initiatives." ✈️ New fixed-wing aircraft capable of zero emission flight (ZEF) have the potential to transform the UK regional aviation market, but ZEF aircraft will require significant changes to the supporting aviation ecosystem in order to operate.     Connected Places Catapult is therefore launching the Connected ZEF Airfields project. Building on our previous infrastructure work, we are assembling engaged stakeholders to consider wider operational, business and safety considerations for airlines and airfields. We will then apply these to real-world UK case studies, with the aim of accelerating the UK’s adoption of ZEF for regional flight. We are seeking collaboration with stakeholders, including airports and airfields, manufacturers, and aircraft operators, as well as those involved in ground handling, finance, and hydrogen generation and distribution. The Government-backed National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills (Skills Plan), launched last week with a charter signing in Westminster. Delivering the ambition to recruit more people into the nuclear sector by 2030 requires concerted action. The skills roadmap identifies the required action across four key themes, underpinned by a set of scoped projects and their strategic benefits. The Skills Plan represents industry and Government working together to deliver the skills needed for UK nuclear and outlines the goal of doubling the number of new apprenticeships by 2026 and recruiting 40,000 new jobs by 2030 – double the current hiring rate for the sector. The nuclear industry plays a huge role in the economic prosperity of the North West and the regions’ transition to Net Zero. The region holds a world-class skills base in decommissioning, fuel and other disciplines and hosting some of the most prestigious nuclear facilities in the country, which were strengthened further by the government’s announcement last week of a £196 million investment into Urenco’s Capenhurst facility. Rachel O'Donnell, Director at Mace, Chair of the Northern Nuclear Alliance and NWBLT member said "I’m pleased to see that the Nuclear Skills Task Force has published the National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills and the Charter to align focus on delivery. The government are awarding £10.5m to Nuclear Transport Solutions to develop the transport capabilities for HALEU fuel. High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) is an innovative form of fuel, which will be used in new nuclear developments that will bolster the UK’s ability to meet its future low-carbon energy needs. NTS will co-fund and deliver a multi-year programme of work alongside government and nuclear sector partners to develop the key technologies, capabilities and assets. 🌞 Solar storms can impact train signals Yes, you read that right. You might not expect a solar storm to disrupt train rides, but new research from Lancaster University suggests it's more than possible. Key findings show solar storms could interfere with train signals, potentially causing accidents. Let’s break it down: solar storms unleash strong magnetic fields on Earth, creating currents that can disrupt electrical grids. This leads to a mismatch in train signaling systems, potentially changing a red "stop" signal to a green "go"—quite a risky situation. In fact, the study highlights the vulnerability of train signalling systems in the UK, with over 50,000 circuits already experiencing glitches. Thankfully, these glitches switched signals to red, not green. But here's the bottom line: we can't afford to be complacent. This research is a wake-up call for the entire space weather industry. We need to double down on our efforts, developing advanced warning systems and potentially even strategic grid shutdowns during extreme events. Perhaps a new infrastructure could be the key to such an underlying challenge in the industry. #spaceweather #spacetech #space #innovation
