The provisional participants list for #COP29 is out and it suggests that Baku is the second-largest climate COP in history. Here, Carbon Brief has analysed the data: https://lnkd.in/eRQxXwVC More than 70,000 delegates have registered for the summit (67k to attend in person and 4k online). That’s a drop of ~15,000 from the record-breaking COP in Dubai last year – and marks the first time in seven years that a COP is not larger than its predecessor. Unsurprisingly, the largest party delegation is from host country Azerbaijan with 2,229. This is a far cry from Azerbaijan’s pre-COP28 typical delegation of just six people. The next-largest delegations come from Brazil (1,914), Turkey (1,862), UAE (1,011) and China (969). As ever, there is a lot in our analysis to dive into – see our article for more!

Excited to share a webinar that our team at the University of Glasgow will be presenting in to highlight some of our expertise in geothermal systems. This presentation will discuss how comparing the assessment of geothermal energy resources within a mixed energy portfolio can help towards the transition to a sustainable Net zero future. David Banks - GSHP and minewater geothermal case studies. This presentation will explore case studies and methods of exploitation of shallow geothermal. Julien Mouli Castillo PhD - Geothermal Mine Water Heating Modelling: GEMSToolbox Abandoned mines present complex and uncertain systems, leading to higher investment risks for geothermal projects compared to other alternatives. To address this challenge, we have developed a numerical modelling tool, GEMSToolbox, designed to provide greater insight and quantify these risks during the feasibility stage. In this presentation, we will outline the purpose of the model, its design, and some preliminary results. Our approach is to work hand-in-hand with end users to provide a tools suited to their needs and support the uptake of the technology. Christopher Brown - Numerical Modelling of Closed-loop Geothermal Systems. This presentation will utilise numerical methods to understand how closed-loop geothermal systems operate. CORSIA Update: Verra, Gold Standard Await Full Approval, Prices Soar! Leading carbon credit registries, including Verra, Gold Standard, Social Carbon and Climate Action Reserve have received conditional approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for Phase 1 (2024-2026). The American Carbon Registry and the Architecture for REDD+ Transactions are the only registries with full approval for Phase 1. Market Reaction: The news sent shockwaves through the carbon market. Following ICAO's announcement, CORSIA futures surged significantly, exceeding 100% in just two days to reach $20 per ton. This price increase likely reflects the perceived tightening of credit availability as airlines have fewer options for approved offsets. Impact on Airlines: This delay affects airlines' ability to utilize carbon offsets issued by Verra, Gold Standard, and other major registries for CORSIA compliance in Phase 1. This could potentially impact early participation and project development for airlines seeking to offset their emissions. Reason for Conditional Approval: ICAO identified areas requiring improvement in these registries' processes, particularly regarding credit accounting and avoiding double-counting of emission reductions under UN guidelines. Verra, Gold Standard, and other registries have until April 15th, 2024 to address ICAO's concerns and resubmit their documentation. A final decision on their full eligibility for CORSIA Phase 1 is expected by September 2024. The UNFCCC’s 2024 NDC Synthesis Report, released today, shows that current national climate plans fall far short of what is needed to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°C. As part of the COP Presidencies Troika, we continue to call on countries to deliver enhanced NDCs that meet the urgency of the moment. Just my view (upon critical reading): Well written and detailed study, definitely. (With some degree of redundancy too, imho). Definitely well orchestrated study involving top notch scholars from international academia. But, but... (Nothing about the most relevant binding tripartite agreement #DOP of 2015 establishing ERU-NSH+cooperation, based on @UNECE_Water Transboundary Watercourses #WaterConvention , and #CFA agreed by most #Nile basin countries? 🤔) 👇 Here is my concise reply to @RenaissanceDam (Ethiopian News) on X in similar arguments/engagements: " Wisdom ☑ Shenanigans 🆚 win-win reciprocity #GERD is godsend for ALL, esp. #Egypt No denying that the precious #Nile fresh 💦 is used & abused in 🇪🇬 (🔝 evaporation in AHD too) & then drained in the #Med 👌 Ultimately, NOTHING is more convenient (compared to suggested other alternatives), financially viable & sustainable than for #Egypt 🇪🇬 buying water &🔌from #Ethiopia 🇪🇹. 🤔 " 👇 Balanced reciprocity is proposed as a practical & sustainable win-win solution. (⛽ & gas for fresh water). ... In my view, it's clear that the whole Nile basin discourse (@nbiweb @nilebasin @RenaissanceDam) needs a paradigm shift, to accommodate also #Ethiopia's 🇪🇹 legitimate benefits (contributing >85% of #Nile waters) deriving directly from its natural resources, for a change. #AllEqual #HumanityFirst As much as this study is reasonably centered on "sharing benefits" (as intended &/or resulting), there is precious little about the huge "sharing costs & investments" too that generate such multiple benefits, currently and in prospective, for all concerned to foot. No easy free-lunch for those contributing the least, or zero. (Hope it was not intended too) The unreasonable suggestion of fixing export tariffs at the maximimun low possible of 0.05-0.06$/KWh, as if 🇪🇹 was stupid or will be forever, whereas smart #Kenya (for example) makes almost 200% profit by selling same at >0.16$/KWh to its customers. [NB: Kenya pays 🥜 for Ethiopian power (0.065) while "dancing for money" with the long overdue ratification of #CFA too ] No need to remind that the aggregate unit cost per KWh of generation, transmission, distribution, administration, financial, taxes is around 0.10$ . Only fools forget & forego their prerogatives and miss opportunities for commercial & sustainable deals. NB: Ethiopia with endemic deficit of grid power (currently insufficient, unreliable & mismanaged), let alone the much expected expansion of rural electrification to cover the almost 70% (effective) without access beyond it. Conversely, the most precious commodity has been purposely omitted in this study, imho. That is fresh water 💦 (🇪🇹n blue-gold) which will soon replace dirty & polluting @arableague_gs oil🛢 that was never "shared" but sold cash. Fortunately, fresh water market is already an established reality like in #Australia, #Colorado 🇺🇸, #Lesotho & #SouthAfrica etc... የኢትዮጵያ አለማወቅ ጉራና ዘረኝነት ቢያበቃ, የት በተደረሰ 🤔

Beyond expectations, progress on Paragraph 28 of the #UAEConsensus is taking place at #COP29 in #Baku. This partnership between the #EU and the Beyond Oil & Gas Alliance could be a major step forward in "transitioning away from fossil fuels in the energy system in a just, orderly and equitable manner". Practical producer-consumer coordination and support for oil and gas-dependent developing countries through transition mentioned here are both essential for making this work. This looks set to to have strong Brazilian support through COP30 with Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogas saying "All countries need to move ahead in implementing the UAE Consensus, including Paragraph 28. To do so, we need cooperation, North and South, South and South and to agree on a roadmap that can help guide this process in a nationally driven and just way." 'Green-grabbing' is a growing and pernicious problem. Timely new research from the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources and Boku University published in Nature Sustainability shows that a lack of transparency is allowing for the privatisation of land for renewable energy infrastructure in Brazil by large international corporations. Lead author, Dr Michael Klingler of Boku University, noted: "The land issue is central to driving effective climate action and promoting 'just' low-carbon energy pathways. The necessity for the energy transition must not be questioned, but rather the way in which these projects are implemented. The collaboration with affected rural communities, NGOs and scientists in the Brazilian state of Bahia showed that traditional and marginalized population groups are confronted with 'new' land conflicts due to the expansion of renewable energies. However, these are increasingly being legitimized by the climate change mitigation imperative." The research was supported by the European Research Council and the research team included Nadia Ameli, Michael Klingler, Jamie Rickman and Johannes Schmidt. #NewReport by Simon Nicholas & Soroush Basirat from Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) examining the challenges of #CarbonCapture for #steel decarbonization, finding that: - Carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) looks unlikely to play a major role in decarbonising the global steel sector, despite support for the technology at #COP28 in 2023. - It is increasingly obvious to many, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), that the uptake of direct reduced iron (DRI)-based steelmaking – which can run on #greenhydrogen with very low emissions – is accelerating. This technology – along with electric arc furnaces (EAFs) associated with renewable electricity – offers steelmakers a far more promising pathway to reduce their emissions than CCUS. - Major #steelmakers around the world still maintain that CCUS will play a role in decarbonising their operations, with plans for CCUS tending to push commercial-scale implementation of the technology off into the 2040s and lacking detail. There are no commercial-scale #CCUS plants for blast furnace-based steelmaking in operation anywhere in the world. The few pilot projects that exist have not proven the technology’s feasibility. The UK’s International Climate Finance (ICF) programme has been helping developing countries mitigate the impacts of climate change, reduce emissions, and address loss and damage. Over the past 12 years, the UK has made notable contributions, including providing 82 million people with improved access to clean energy, reducing or avoiding 105 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (equivalent to removing all UK cars from the roads for 19 months), and preventing the loss of 750,000 hectares of ecosystems. Participants in the carbon markets expressed optimism as they expected demand and sentiment to improve following parties to the Conference of Parties approving the two standards-- for carbon removals and project methodologies-- developed by Supervisory Body. Even though the body is likely to come up with methodologies for Article 6.4 markets as early as mid 2025, there could be possible delays.
