We’ve had some fantastic conversations in the last week with CEOs in the hedge fund space. Key things we have been discussing and some challenges CEOs will face in January. Performance reporting & IR. Youl need to complete all performance and year end reporting, if you are under a certain level of AUM it may be worth utilising contractors for this type of work when the workload piles on. Extensive meetings with investors, they will be accessing whether to increase, decrease or or withdraw capital based on last years performance. It’s important to paint the story of the last 12 months have real time data and don’t BS if you want to retain. This is where a stellar Head of IR or IR team will come into its own. If you need help to find someone you know where to come (my DMs) Allocation and fundraising time. Some investors may take advantage of liquidity windows or some may redeem to allocate elsewhere. Your going to need to be pitching, pitching, oh and pitching more. Demonstrate value above all of the noise. It’s also time to rebalance the portfolio. Boring but key tasks this month will be audit prep and staying ahead of the curve on new regulation in digital assets. Last piece, which really should be done by now but your not going to generate returns without the talent to produce them. Talent management is absolutely vital. Where are the gaps? North American funds emerged as the primary destination for UK investor capital, absorbing an unprecedented £5.72 billion in Q1 alone, marking a significant shift in investment strategy towards transatlantic markets. Despite this surge, UK equity funds experienced outflows, reaching their highest levels since February 2023. However, interest in ESG equity funds remained steady, reflecting a growing trend towards socially responsible investing. With global equity markets surging, fixed income fund inflows also reached their highest level since June 2023, driven by investors seeking high income amidst rising yields. Leading banking, investment, and technology leaders anounce its "Time to invest in Britain" as £63 BILLION of investment is promised! At Monday's International Investment Summit, more than a dozen bosses at the world's largest banks, PE firms, insurers and tech giants have signalled their optimism in the future of the British economy. Senior leaders at Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, Citi, KKR, Blackstone, Aviva and Legal & General were all present at the event and signatories on a statement backing Britain's educational system, history and economy, stating; “As global investors, we believe that there is a very real opportunity for the UK to grow its economy by attracting international investment." Britain’s educational establishments, legal system, financial services sector and language form the bedrock of a strong investment proposition. Technological developments, advances in the energy system and greater freedom in capital flows have further enhanced Britain’s position. With greater stability, its attractiveness is increased even further. We are optimistic about the future of the economy, and believe it is time to invest in Britain." The summit also marking the announcement of £63bn of investment from a range of investors creating the best part of 38,000 jobs. With UK business confidence at a nine-year high according to Lloyds Bank's latest Business Barometer, at a 45% YTD average (well above the long-term average of 29%!), UK inflation expected to fall below the 2% target for the first time in 3 years, and further rate cuts looking likely to end the year... is the UK economy set to turn the corner? 🎅 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐎𝐮𝐭, 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 🎅 One of the coolest clients I ever worked with was the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE). Back in the late ’90s, being a trader there meant you were young, sharp, super-intelligent, and, let’s be honest, probably beautiful too. These men and women stood out in their vibrant, colourful jacket- badges of honour in the trading pits. They were gladiators, battling it out in a high-stakes, fast-paced arena. It was real-life Wolf of Wall Street, minus the Hollywood filters. My recruitment firm had the best time hiring their support staff and an army of pit observers, whose job was to ensure fair play in an environment where dodgy dealings could easily brew. Working for LIFFE was a thrill, but one of the pinnacle moments for me was attending their 15-year anniversary party. It was a night of pure magic- fireworks lighting up the London sky, champagne flowing like water, actors performing to wow the crowd, and the lead singer of M People, one of the biggest acts of the ’90s, belting out the hits. It felt like the city was alive with possibility. But just a week later, the atmosphere shifted. LIFFE’s water machines disappeared, and a month after that, mass redundancies followed. It felt like the city had changed overnight. The super-cool traders who once dominated the pits were replaced by handheld devices- automated trading systems. The LIFFE we knew was gone. 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐈𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟: Fast-forward to today, and we’re on the cusp of another revolution. Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Vanguard, JP Morgan, and their peers are pouring resources into developing advanced AI systems. Generative AI, such as OpenAI’s GPT models, is evolving at breakneck speed. Right now, it might seem quirky and flawed, churning out random outputs and often sparking laughter, but don’t be fooled- it’s only a matter of time before these systems become indispensable. And when that happens? Just like LIFFE’s pits, countless jobs will be wiped out, replaced by algorithms and automation. This isn’t speculation- it’s the direction we’re heading. 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫: As we head into 2025, the question is: are you ready? If not, here’s my advice: 1. 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬: Get a subscription to platforms like OpenAI. Stay on top of updates, explore new features, and make it your business to learn how to use these tools in your work and daily life. 2. 𝐔𝐩𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐰: Dive into AI training, experiment with automation, and understand how these technologies apply to your industry. 3. 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞: The key to surviving this next wave of change is adaptability. Be the person who embraces technology, not the one left behind by it. The world is changing faster than ever. You better watch out, you better beware- and most importantly, you better prepare. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Stay ahead of the curve!

'I've been looking to fill a Fund Controller role for 3 months and it's been a painful process... why is it this hard?' This was the desperate cries of a FD I spoke to last week at a credit fund. Sound familiar? If you want to HIRE or RETAIN PEOPLE at this level, then read on... 🔹Filling that 'experienced' layer in Funds Finance is tough and this has been amplified in recent years by the growth of the alts sector. This is why salaries/bonuses have skyrocketed, albeit the last 18 months has seen this calm down slightly. Basic supply and demand out of sync, coupled with a short term and reactive approach to hiring which is not a new problem: 'I need someone yesterday who can do this role now.' 🔹JOURNEY MAPPING at this time of year is KEY. Its why people will start looking and moving from Q1: few years into a role, can't see a fund raise or close on the horizon, deal activity is low, bonus is due in the next 6 months, unchallenged, time to move on. If you want to RETAIN people you have to paint the picture and create an opportunity to progress. Culture and people only keep someone in a role to a point. 🔹Day to day responsibilities is also a big PUSH factor for some candidates; moving away from pure fund reporting and taking on more commercial elements of Fund Ops like deal support, valuations or performance/portfolio monitoring for example. What can you do to spice things up? On the reverse these are big PULL factors if you're hiring. 🔹It's a race to the top and people want that converted FD job title. IMO people do move roles more frequently nowadays and it is realistic to be in a senior position, possibly the number 1 role, by the time you're 8-10 years PQE. This is driving movement and churn. Any savvy FD or CFO knows who in their team is in a holding pattern and chomping at the bit to jump up. 🔹See point one: REACTIVE HIRING. Narrow briefs and the need for people who are experienced Funds Finance professionals has meant less people coming into teams from areas like Audit or Fund Admin. The loop of supply and demand continues... If you want to hire at this level, then keeping an open mind will always allow you to capitalise on a greater pool of talent. Have I missed anything?

The UK Bond Market’s Warning to Keir Starmer : A Call for Change. As the UK grapples with rising yields in the bond market, an unmistakable message is being sent to Reeves and Starmer: “Your current policies are not effective, and a change of course is urgently needed.” This sentiment, widely echoed by market analysts and leading economists, reflects growing concerns over the government’s fiscal strategy and its potential implications for the UK economy. At the heart of this troubling scenario lies an administration that refuses to acknowledge the catastrophic consequences of its failing strategy. I would suggest there is no greater mismanagement than a naive chancellor and PM believing that ill-considered tax hikes will create growth. This is compounded by their disregard for all expert commentary that explains the clear deficiencies of such a strategy. For the avoidance of doubt, I am very concerned about how UK business confidence has declined significantly. Accordingly, this and similar posts are not intended to serve any party political agenda.
