If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

Recognizing climate change as a global challenge requiring substantial public sector response, this draft establishes disclosure requirements to support informed decision-making and accountability in the sector. Key Aspects of SRS Exposure Draft 1: 1. Scope and Purpose: • Focuses on the climate-related risks and opportunities impacting public sector operations. • Mandates disclosures on climate-related public policies and program outcomes, making these insights accessible to stakeholders. 2. Alignment with International Standards: • Builds upon global best practices, ensuring compatibility with established international sustainability standards. • Tailored to meet unique public sector requirements, addressing specific informational needs for comparability and reliability in public sector reports. 3. Entities Covered: • Applies to public sector organizations primarily engaged in public service delivery, funded through public means like taxes, government transfers, or social contributions, and without profit as a core objective. • Includes national, regional, and local governments, various governmental departments and agencies, public social security funds, and international government organizations. 4. Public Feedback Opportunity: • Open for public comment until February 28, 2025. • Feedback will inform the final standard, assisting public sectors globally in addressing climate impacts effectively. The IPSASB’s initiative strengthens the role of standardized reporting in fostering climate accountability, facilitating access to necessary funding, and promoting sustainable public sector governance. We often talk about the role that digital technologies can play in the transition to a lower-carbon world. A report by Google and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found that AI has the potential to help mitigate 5-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. However, we know that we can’t do this alone. Addressing climate change - one of the greatest challenges facing the world today - requires collaboration across business, government, academia and community organizations. Today, the European Green Digital Coalition laid the groundwork towards a more sustainable future with its release of a new, robust methodology to measure the impact of green digital technologies with contributions from several organizations and companies, including Google. Key Findings: ❌ Only 17% of the companies attending COP29 have science-aligned climate policy advocacy positions (as defined by the IPCC 1.5C pathways). ❌ These companies are matched by a further 21% of companies in attendance that are actively pushing for policy pathways likely to lock-in warming scenarios well in excess of the internationally agreed targets set out by the 2015 Paris Agreement. ❌ 1/3 of industry associations attending COP29 covered by the LobbyMap database oppose science-aligned climate policy.

As we all continue to double down on our efforts to invest in reducing GHG emissions – this is a timely and welcome publication by Oxford Net Zero and BSI (an update to their earlier research) which assesses 37 (!!!!) voluntary resources used internationally (by non-state players) to guide net zero action. Great to see strengthened convergence amongst various tools and resources so we’re slowly all getting on the same page – but still so many gaps! So many areas could benefit from greater alignment!! A new United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and Accenture report 'A Path to Net Zero: A Climate Mitigation Journey (CMJ)' presents a strategy framework applicable to each and every bank regardless of climate maturity and/or country of operation. Some of the significant developments and takeaways: - Deep Emission Reductions: There is an urgent need for rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to meet the net-zero target by 2050. Countries are recognizing that a swift transition away from fossil fuels is essential, and many are setting ambitious timelines to phase out coal and invest in cleaner energy sources - Renewable Energy Goals: A bold commitment has been made to triple global renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030. This shift not only aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels but also seeks to create millions of green jobs worldwide, driving economic growth while protecting our planet - Methane Emission Focus: New pledges have emerged to cut methane emissions significantly, with a target of reducing them by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030. This initiative is bolstered by over $1 billion in funding, highlighting the importance of tackling short-lived climate pollutants for immediate climate benefits - Loss and Damage Fund: A landmark establishment of a fund dedicated to assisting vulnerable countries facing severe climate impacts has been announced. With a total of $12.8 billion in new pledges, this fund aims to address the urgent needs of those most affected by climate change, ensuring they have the resources necessary for adaptation and recovery. As we look ahead, countries are expected to prepare updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2025. Enhanced collaboration among nations is anticipated, with an emphasis on sharing technology, financing solutions, and best practices to accelerate climate action globally.
