I am glad to see this. In 2012 I raised valid corporate governance issues to MSCI ESG over the treament of Enersis (now Enel Americas) minorities in a capital raise by the parent company only to be told 'this sort' of governance issue was not the kind of thing the index scored companies on or dealt with. So we (Alejandro Bezanilla of AFP Habitat and I) dealt with it (the company and the lawyers) and got a fairer deal for minorities. (All other active managers on the registry I approached declined to be involved). But it is also worth reminding others that many in the ESG/sustainability lobby at the time were active in trying to shame and embarass those that reasonably pointed out the many problems with specific indices, funds or 'ESG' approaches for the sake of (as it turns out) unsustainably inflated brand values:

Thoroughly enjoyed #RAOEurope24 yesterday and participating in the STWRD Round Table. Discussion on achieving the best outcomes from the eco-system of participants in stewardship led us to discuss the open FRC consultation on the UK Stewardship Code and specifically the proposal to revise the definition. My observation that the issue of intentional impact could potentially be solved by changing one word in the current definition (substitute "leading" with "contributing") seemed to land well – so for others who’d like to test it out in preparing their own responses to the consultation – here you go: “Stewardship is the responsible allocation, management and oversight of capital to create long-term value for clients and beneficiaries contributing to sustainable benefits for the economy, the environment and society”. To achieve the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework, we need fundamental transitions across economic sectors - similar to how the low-carbon transition is essential for addressing climate change. Though there's still some uncertainty about what a nature-positive transition will look like, there are exciting developments from TNFD, Green Finance Institute, and others to build that understanding at a sector and country-level. Last year EBRD released an Approach to Nature, outlining our role in scaling up action. That starts with strong environmental safeguards, but doesn't stop there. We're exploring new opportunities for investment and supporting policy dialogue. At COP16, I spoke about analysis we conducted with Biodiversify to explore the concept of a nature-positive economic transition, from a country perspective. While just an exploratory diagnostic, we gained insight on how we might methodologically approach this topic in the future to support our countries of operation, leveraging ENCORE and other data-driven approaches. We welcome the early publication of the UK’s ambitious NDC, which commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035. This statement of intent signals UK leadership on climate and offers a valuable opportunity to attract clean energy investments, spur clean growth, and strengthen investor confidence in the country’s climate trajectory.      Further details to underpin this new NDC are an important next step. A clear delivery plan, particularly for sectoral decarbonisation, will be essential for attracting private finance and making NDCs a central tool in reducing emissions. Ensuring NDCs are investable by defining the role of private finance is crucial to closing the climate finance gap.     As one of the first countries to publish an updated NDC ahead of the February 2025 deadline, the UK makes clear that it intends to lead. This early, ambitious step can have a ripple effect, building confidence in other countries to increase their own commitments.     Now is the time for others to follow suit. Impactful NDCs can maintain international momentum and demonstrate to investors that the transition to a net zero economy is key to long-term growth. They are ready to support and amplify this impact. #COP29

The #IEA published a new and interesting report on the relevance of recycling of #criticalmaterials. "Recycling is indispensable to the security and sustainability of critical minerals supply for clean energy transitions. [...] Moreover, scaling up recycling mitigates the environmental and social impacts related to mining and refining while preventing waste from enduse technologies ending up in landfills." An "Industrial Policy" Green Paper is most welcome and provides a framework that ought to re-assure those seeking to invest in the UK. Having a defined and detailed Industrial Policy will assist in promoting and securing long term industrial investment for the next 10 years and beyond in an integrated manner that aligns planning, infrastructure and power to commercial enterprise. A welcome a positive step to getting the inward scaled investment that the country so desperately needs to secure growth and increase productivity.

Thank you to CFA UK for inviting me to speak at their annual Sustainability conference and to Oliver MacArthur, CFA for excellent moderation! With stiff competition from other concurrent sessions, I was very pleased to see a full room for my session on decarbonising infrastructure ☺️ I shouldn’t be surprised really - infrastructure is a very exciting asset class and even more so now, when it’s the cornerstone of the global transition to Net Zero. My session covered two main themes: 1) decarbonisation of hard to abate sectors and 2) investment in climate solutions. On the former, I talked about transitioning airports, with examples of scopes 1 and 2 emission reductions coming from electrifying ground vehicles and generating renewable energy through installing solar farms on disused airport land. For Scope 3 emissions, SAF plays a key role and there was a lot of interest in our work with GrainCorp to explore the creation of SAF refining industry in Australia, as well as the work of MAG (Airports Group) on SAF with Fulcrum BioEnergy, Inc. and their waste-to-fuel refinery. When it comes to climate solutions, we covered another one of our portfolio companies: GreenGasUSA and their exciting work on capturing methane emissions from waste streams and purifying it into pipeline quality renewable natural gas. Today is the start of London Climate Week 2024 - the biggest ever. Kicking off at the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) Net Zero Summit, with a keynote from Fatih Birol, Executive Director at the International Energy Agency (IEA). Key takeaways: 💰$2 trillion was invested last year in clean energy and grids ($500bn in solar alone), vs $1 trillion in fossil fuels - but only 4% of oil and gas sector investments are in clean energy. 🗺️ Only 15% of clean energy and grid investment is in emerging markets, where two-thirds of the global population live. The Netherlands generates more solar power than the whole of sun-drenched Sun-Saharan Africa, where half of the population has no access to electricity. 🤝 Energy, climate and trade policy is becoming increasingly interwoven. A balance must be struck, and election results around the world may adjust the speed of transition in some geographies, but the global direction of travel toward clean energy is absolutely clear.
