Tackling Health Inequalities: Two Months of Progress with Safer Communities Alliance The past two months have been a whirlwind of activity and meaningful impact. We've dedicated ourselves to addressing health inequalities alongside NHS guests and voluntary sector speakers with marginalised communities and supporting families through both behind-the-scenes efforts and hands-on work. Health inequalities disproportionately affect marginalised groups, and we've made it our mission to bridge the gap by providing culturally competent, accessible support. Key Focus Areas Trauma Around Childbirth: Offering a listening ear to mothers who have experienced trauma during childbirth, providing a safe space to share, heal, and connect. Breaking Down Cultural Barriers: Bridging gaps between diverse communities and essential health services, ensuring everyone feels understood and included. Hypertension in Black and Brown Communities: Raising awareness about high blood pressure risks and prevention strategies in communities that face disproportionate impacts. Cancer Awareness and Support: Educating families about early detection and accessing support services for better outcomes. Budgeting for Well-being: Empowering families to manage finances effectively, helping to reduce stress and improve overall stability. Mental Health and Crisis Support: Offering direct interventions and workshops to address mental health challenges, particularly for those in crisis. Sickle Cell Awareness and Crisis Management Providing feedback and discussions to help those affected by this condition, ensuring they receive the right support they need. Mindfulness and Exercise: Promoting practices to reduce stress and improve physical health, including mindfulness sessions and exercise programs. Mother and Baby Listening Groups: Creating spaces where mothers can share experiences, seek guidance, and build a supportive community. Youth Hub Nutrition Night, Health living education, child crime exploitation, Drugs and alcohol education and impact on the body We finish the week with a nutrition workshop at our Youth Hub, where young people gathered to tentatively listen, learn, and engage with the topic of healthy eating. Homeless employment - and social mobility recruitment more broadly - not only relieves destitution, but has the potential to prevent it too. Seven years after our work on HI Future started, it's so encouraging to see major sides being taken by government and social sector partners to help those impacted find security and stability back into employment. I'm in awe at the Centre for Homelessness Impact. My hope is that, as this work deepens, that the focus on organisational transformation matches that to enable personal and professional progress. You can lead as many people as you like to get back into work, but unless the cultural perceptions, structural meritocracy and personal propensity of employers to support people healing from trauma back into work is addressed, the long-term sustainability of such programmes are likely to be compromised. Where are you seeing employers do the discomforting, internal work to open up space for people who've experienced the world diffferently?

‘Alarming lack of access to green space fuelling UK child obesity crisis, doctors warn’ - The Guardian Child obesity is already a significant public health problem. In England, one in three children are leaving primary school overweight or obese and face a higher risk of serious health conditions, mental health problems and dying prematurely. But medics and public health experts say that poor access to playing fields and playgrounds at state schools is contributing to worsening and wider health inequalities, which is leading to thousands of children growing up overweight or obese. A lack of access to pitches or courts at school also prevents children from practising their skills and exercising during unstructured outdoor time such as lunch breaks and play times. Optimising access to open spaces for children – particularly for those who do not have access to such spaces at home – must become a greater public health priority to protect the next generation. 'Where have all the childhoods gone?' - Paul Lindley OBE & Anne Longfield CBE in Policy Press It has been over 15 years since the last government Play Strategy (which was developed by the last Labour government, together with Play England). It was launched in 2008, but the strategy itself is now largely forgotten. Meanwhile, the very nature of childhood has changed in ways we could never have imagined. Over the last decade, children and families have lost so many different environments for play and fun. 800 playgrounds have closed, along with more than half of all youth centres and nearly every Sure Start centre. School playing fields have been sold off and our streets have heavier traffic and feel less safe for children to play. We live in an era of ‘No Ball Games’ signs and reduced school playtime. The loss of free play, particularly active outdoor play, initiated and directed by children themselves has meant many children are no longer playing for hours every day, burning calories, learning social and creative skills, making sense of the world around them, and reducing stress. Yet over the last decade there has been an unforgiveable absence of vision for optimising opportunities to play. The need for a new national conversation about how to encourage and support children to play has never been more urgent. That is why the #RaisingTheNation Play Commission was launched in partnership the Centre for Young Lives, and the timing could not be better with a new government. We believe that play can and should become a central part of childhood again, and that government can play a creative, leading role in supporting parents, families and children to play. Today, Health Equity North unveiled a crucial report shedding light on the health disparities impacting women in the north. Our team took pride in contributing to this vital research, amplifying the voices of those with lived experiences. In the words of Kirsty from the report, "Like cancer needs chemo, my drug addiction needed treatment. Like diabetes needs insulin, I needed domestic abuse intervention. Like infection needs antibiotics, my social isolation needed friends and loved ones. I was not a bad person doing bad things, I was a sick person needing to get well." The women of REFORM represent individuals with unmet health needs, often resulting in child removals and unjust stigmatization through labels like Neglect or Abuse. It is imperative to recognize the importance of addressing social, emotional, and mental health needs to prevent further harm and stigma. ‘Children facing a ‘brutal’ loss of time and space for play at state schools’ - The Guardian Shorter playtimes and shrinking outside space in England have serious implications for children’s wellbeing and mental health. New research from the UCL Institute of Education showed a continued downward trend in the amount of time children have for playtime in the wake of the Covid lockdowns, with the youngest losing the most time. The demands of the curriculum have increased, and continue to diminish time outside, while staffing shortages are reducing capacity to oversee playtime. Schools face difficult financial decisions, which are having an impact on the funding to care for grounds. Headteachers in the state sector have said they are in desperate need of funding to improve basic facilities for children. School buildings are crumbling, as many were built with RAAC that was not replaced within its usable lifetime, meaning in some cases playgrounds are being used to host temporary classrooms. This is squeezing out the little space some schools have for children to spend time outside. Damien Jordan, Headteacher said “The curriculum means that from six or seven years old play is gone . . . it’s brutal, children aren’t ready. In 2022, we warned about the risk of Government funding cuts and our Sep 23 £1bn Funding Cuts report showed the impact. That derailed the fragile sector recovery and we are now in deeper crisis than ever. It also showed how that could be avoided in future and our subsequent Charity Recovery Roadmap added more ideas, including those of others. I'm again seeing increasing reports of new funding cuts, including this one. The Government promised change but if it's not soon delivered, we'll all sit and watch another largely avoidable car crash. Excellent coverage of the IPPR Commission into Health and Prosperity across today's papers, including in The Guardian. https://lnkd.in/eifgjqKB I've been privileged to be on the Commission for the past three years, alongside Ara Darzi, Sally Davies, Andy Burnham, James Bethell, Sophie Howe, Matthew Taylor and other leading figures from across the political spectrum. The summary of our findings? Britain is getting sicker and poorer. This is not coincidence: our poor population health is harming our individual prosperity and our national economy. The flipside of this challenge is an opportunity — better health is exactly the medicine our economy needs. But our current approach to the nation’s health is not working to deliver genuinely healthier lives. We need to move from a sickness model of health policy to a health creation one, where everyone in society is empowered to contribute to healthier, happier and fairer lives. Practically this means: 1️⃣  A shift from work that harms health, to work that creates it  2️⃣  A shift from tolerating sickness, to an active industrial strategy for health  3️⃣  From waiting for sickness, to health creation at the start of life  4️⃣  From places that make us sick, to empowered, healthy communities  5️⃣  From reactive services, to preventative, primary care led healthcare    I do encourage you to read and engage with the report, which will be launched by Wes Streeting tomorrow. It sets out policy recommendations that form an oven-ready plan for this parliament and a substantive contribution to the new government’s health mission. As a trustee, how confident are you that you’re asking the ‘right’ social impact questions? This is one of the key challenges I'll be raising today as I train the 105 trustees who managed to secure a spot in the session I'm running (we were so oversubscribed, we had to close bookings!). Today's session on good governance is part of the ongoing trustee training offered by our Social Value UK member, Buzzacott. I’ll be delivering it alongside partners Edward Finch and Hugh Swainson. Good governance is a passion of mine, stemming from my legal background in compliance and regulation, my NED experience, and my work in politics, where The Nolan Principles have always been at the forefront. Over two years ago we identified the risk of increased prices, stagnant wages and people having to make tough choices. We spoke about the risk of the cost-of-living crisis becoming a prolonged public health crisis. Disappointing to see that in 2025 those same choices are necessary. Lifting people out of poverty, creating meaningful and well paid work, giving people access to healthier foods choices, making opportunities for leisure and movement more accessible and creating a safety net for the most vulnerable are critical components of a compassionate, strong and economically viable society. More people spending time in nature ➡️ more climate action, right? 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲. We’ve been working with coalition of partners in Manchester, to help make nature more accessible for everyone in the city and capture the stories and characteristics of community nature projects that make them thrive. Thanks to the support of the Wates Family Enterprise Trust we’ve: 🤝 Been working with communities to connect people & nature 🪴 Supported community-led initiatives to bring nature back to shared spaces 🔎 Conducted research to better understand the links between nature and climate action On that last point: it seems it's not just nature that makes a difference, but there is a mechanism for change there. It works something like this: • Enable 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: that’s what makes people turn up • Create a 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: that’s what makes people come back • Make people feel 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿: it’s what makes change feel positive and worthwhile Curious? This says "The 2024 General Election brought 335 new MPs into the House of Commons. For the many charities that seek to influence parliamentarians, this creates a significant challenge. That’s 335 new MPs to research and sift through to try and understand if they might be inclined to support a charity’s cause. "Many small charities cannot afford parliamentary monitoring systems or expensive agencies to do that sifting for them. If hundreds of organisations all undertake the same research into those MPs’ backgrounds, it means massive amounts of duplication and wasted time for already time-starved organisations. A Must ready blog

I used the bank holiday weekend in the UK to listen to the International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC) Plenary 3 at #ICIC24, co-chaired by Professor Robin Miller and Sarah McLaughlin. The discussion centred around global experiences of general practice in delivering #integratedcare. As Professor Robin Miller challenged in his opening - in general practice we can see both the best and the worst of care integration. Starting with the best, Sarah McLaughlin from Mid & East Antrim Agewell Partnership talked to Billy Johnson about his lived experience of #personcentredcare that was based around what mattered to him and the confidence that gave him in his #generalpractice. It was such a lovely conversation to listen to between two people who clearly understood the value of #relationalcare. Amarjit Maxwell shared the experience of the one of the Primary Health Organisation THINK Hauora in New Zealand as they support the general practice journey to well-being partner for communities, Richard Lewanczuk shared the experience in Alberta, Canada as general practice moves to an extended team that includes people and care-givers as the main providers of care, and Jan De Maeseneer took us on a journey through 50 years of primary care development in Flanders towards Community Health Centres. So many lessons shared along the way. My takeaways: 📈 The pressure on general practice everywhere is increasing and unlikely to decrease anytime soon 🏘 General practice that is moving away from the 'traditional model' of reactive care to preventative and relational care will thrive and help their communities thrive BUT - the 🐘 in the room was 💶! - Investment in new models of multi-disciplinary primary care can accelerate this process hugely, as the evaluation of a model of care shared by Jan shows [https://lnkd.in/eHNmBsux] but this has not yet happened to any significant degree.
