We need to talk about the biggest problem for junior drivers in motorsport... Money. Earlier this week, FIA Formula 2 driver, Zak O'Sullivan, announced that he won't be finishing the F2 season with his team, ART GP. In an emotional Instagram post, the young driver explained that in motorsport, "there are more factors at play than just the stopwatch". The issue, he said, was a simple one - he hasn't got enough funding to continue paying for his F2 seat. In Formula 2, drivers are expected to pay for their seats, either through their own sponsors or through a driver academy. But, on average, an F2 seat can cost a driver between $2 -3 million PER SEASON. And some, like Zak, simply can't obtain sponsorship to afford a full season. This is frustrating for a number of reasons, but particularly when you consider Zak's achievements: 👉 Winning the GB3 Championship in 2021, beating 28 drivers including Ollie Bearman (who will be driving in Formula 1 next year). 👉 Crowned as runner-up in last year's FIA Formula 3 championship, beating current Formula 1 driver, Franco Colapinto. 👉 In his first year in Formula 2, winning the race in Monaco and taking victory in the sprint race at Spa. Motorsport is one of the least meritocratic sports in the world. In football, all you need is a ball, a pair of football boots, and heaps of natural talent. But with motorsport, all you need is... a sponsor willing to give you two million dollars. If I was predicting the future, I would say that the biggest change in motorsport will come when someone finds a way to fix the financial model for junior categories - through more investment, stronger broadcasting deals and a commitment to marketing junior categories in the same way as Formula 1. Autosport International 25 completed! I reflect on what can only be described as a truly dynamic and fruitful experience for #GFOne and its clients. Walking through the buzzing halls of the #NEC Birmingham, I was there representing some of the most exciting names in motorsport— #TOCAJuniors #Britcar Endurance Championship, the rising #BTCC star Maximus Hall Hall, and the exceptional talent housed under Mairon Motorsport Management. Some might say that the show isn’t what it was, that since the mid 10’s the decline in manufacturers and big-name brands with their colossal stands have removed the importance of #AutosportInternational, but here’s nothing quite like the energy of a season-opening show, and we would be lost without it. It’s the place where ambition meets opportunity, and for four days, the future of motorsport came alive. The championships I represent were met with enthusiasm and curiosity from prospective competitors and industry insiders alike. The #TOCA Juniors championship sparked conversations with young drivers eager to make their mark, while the Britcar Endurance Racing Championship drew a series of long conversations with seasoned racers and team managers eager to be part of what promises to be a thrilling 2025 season. If early impressions are anything to go by, the Britcar grid is shaping up to be one of the strongest we’ve seen in years. Then there were the drivers. Max Hall, an emerging star in the BTCC, and the incredible roster from Mairon Motorsport Management were the talk of several meetings. Sitting across from potential #sponsors, it was clear they weren’t just buying into drivers; they were investing in stories of grit, determination, and undeniable talent. Those discussions, held in the midst of UK motorsport’s most vibrant event, planted seeds that we hope will grow into fruitful #partnerships throughout 2025. The beauty of an event like Autosport International is how it serves as a nexus for everything motorsport—from grassroots racing to the pinnacle of endurance championships. For the championships and drivers I represent, it’s more than a showcase. It’s a starting line for relationships, opportunities, and a shared vision for the future. The connections made, the interest generated, and the momentum built over those show days are invaluable. In another innovative fan-focused activation from Williams Racing, we learnt last week that fans registered with the team's Grid Pass programme will get the chance to design the look of the rear wing at October's US Grand Prix in Austin. Launched alongside their partner Kraken Digital Asset Exchange, fans will get access to a new 100,000-strong profile picture collection of digital assets, featuring ten different character types in various forms of Williams branding. Fans will then be able to submit their own collectibles to be included in the rear wing design, with the final shortlist of 12 being voted on by fans later in September. I'm a big fan of these types of brand activations, and Williams are amongst the best on the Formula 1 grid at executing them. Last year's US Grand Prix saw the first iteration of Kraken's rear wing takeover, and the team also had their custom Gulf Oil livery run at three races after fans could vote for their favourite. Creating these opportunities for fans to directly influence something they will see at races is such a strong way of building positive feeling towards the team, and also grows fan loyalty - something that is arguably even more important and difficult to do for a team that isn't competing for race wins. Evidence that this is something that Williams are particularly good at was shown in The Race's recent F1 fan census, which saw Williams revealed as the third most popular team on the grid, behind only McLaren and Ferrari. #f1 #formula1 #motorsport #sponsorship #williams #sportsbiz

You can tell so much about a company by how former employees talk and feel about its achievements after they’ve left... Seeing the current McLaren Racing team celebrating that historic Constructors’ title has been great to watch - they haven't half earned it. How proud and happy former-team members are for them is also very wholesome, and I think it underlines the reasons behind their success. I only sampled a few years of it, but the ‘family’ and team ethos that is fostered through every facet of the business leads directly to moments like these. From HR to the canteen, it’s all about making every single person feel part of the journey. Nobody left behind. Everybody feels integral. On-track and back at base. And it never really leaves you. There were two significant announcements last week with regards to sponsorship of female drivers, further underlining the opportunities that brands are seeing in supporting women in motorsport. In the US, it was revealed that Katherine Legge will take to the track for her fourth Indy 500 at the end of May with Dale Coyne Racing, backed by E.L.F. BEAUTY as her primary sponsor. Having supported Legge in a smaller capacity in the past, this will represent the first time a beauty brand has served as the primary sponsor of a driver in the Indy 500 in the race's 100+ year history. On the domestic UK motorsport scene, Porsche Sprint Challenge GB driver Caitlin Wood will be supported by Mattel, Inc.'s Barbie during the 2024 season. As well as carrying the brand on her car's livery, the partnership will see ten young girls invited to each race weekend, with Caitlin also due to visit schools and universities to promote careers in STEM. These announcements, alongside the groundbreaking Charlotte Tilbury Beauty partnership in F1 Academy, not only show the growing appetite of brands to support women in motorsport, but also how increased female participation can open up new commercial opportunities for the sport with non-endemic brands. Gaining insight from more seasoned professionals in motorsports communications over the last few years has motivated me to have all 5 of the skills Silvia Schweiger mentioned in her post.🏁 1. I love learning new skills! If someone is willing to teach me, I’m always open to learning. Now that I have a little experience in the communications field, learning the right way of doing the job is so important. There is always something to learn! 🎓 2. Social media is an ever changing field, which brings me to the second point of being adaptable and flexible. Growing up traveling to races, I have always had to be adaptable and flexible. These values have carried over to my professional skills, and for me that looks like not being afraid of change. Additionally, being successful in my job no matter the circumstances is a trait I value myself in. 🌎 3. Showing your potential is a big one for me! When looking at open positions, seeing “2+ years of experience” under the requirements can be extremely discouraging. Over the last six months, I have turned that around to show employers my capabilities although I may not have all of the experience they are wanting. I can confidently say that I feel capable to do the job I am seeking while continuing to learn how to do it even better. 📈 4/5. Having a can do attitude goes a long way when searching for a job in motorsports, or any job for that matter. Tied in with point 5, having this type of attitude has taught me to be patient in my job search. Even after a rejection and the discouragement that comes from the limited availability of social media jobs in motorsports, I still remind myself every day to be patient because I will get my chance if I keep trying. All it takes is one person to say yes✅ Employers and employees, what do you think is the most important skill when looking for a job? If you’re still here, thanks for reading! That hit me in the face! Sorry! This week… Sports is a great leveller, particularly if it’s a sport that’s not in your own repertoire. I like to use ‘garden sports’ for team building, simple to organise, most people are able to have a go, generally not age or ability limited, you can make it inclusive for those that need adjustments. Mixed doubles badminton is my favourite for team activity. Book a couple of courts and rent some bats at the local sports centre, mix up your team play a game, then mix up again so everyone plays with everyone, get the people in the wider reaches of your team that don’t interact often, to play together! After a while, the ‘in-work personas’ of everyone starts to rub off and their normal character becomes exposed – admit it, you all have a work persona! Sometimes, people really are just that competitive, others trying something they don’t normally do can be hard for them, the social butterfly might become a moth and others might come forward and be more outgoing and expressive than they would due to the more relaxed setting. You should be observing and learning about each other whilst having a bit of fun, I learn so much about colleagues when we’re not in the office or wfh on teams. I’d say I learn at about 10x rate. You can use this to help tailor your interactions at work to get the absolute best out of the team. Just be careful you don’t get a shuttlecock in the face! Duck or sway! Why is this partnership significant 👇 Because it started with a commercial partnership, first, and due to the success of the partnership in its first season, progressed to Powerleague affiliating over 200 teams to Hampshire FA. We have worked closely with Chris D., Dean Griffiths ⚽️ 🏆 and the Powerleague team to establish a small-sided league at our King George V Football Complex (following the success at Stoneham Lane Football Complex) which took off with 10 teams back in February of this year - all teams of which have been retained. The growth of this league has also meant the small-sided providers are looking to expand the league at our site with additional slots. Commercial partnerships done right and with additional outcomes generated🏆. What started as a 1-season agreement has now transitioned into a 3-season deal 💪.
