You're facing financial constraints in your business. How can you justify investing in sustainable practices?
We have hit a milestone in the world where decarbonisation, cost savings and enterprise resilience are going hand in hand. Keeping that in mind, the internal business case for investing in the right sustainability activities is therefore clear. Focusing on the right investments should therefore lead to an increase in enterprise value, and should be prioritised.

You're invested in a struggling early-stage startup. When is the right time to exit and cut your losses?
For me there is only one indicator here: what is your stop loss. The best traders are not the ones who have better market insights, better connections, etc. They are the ones who know when to take their losses and move on. Stick to your stop loss and don't become emotional about it. Don't believe that you can do a better job than the market or the executive team.

You're considering investing in a startup. How can you ensure thorough due diligence under time constraints?
Talk talk talk. Speak to clients, people who know the space that the company is operating in, experts in the relevant market segment. Then check out the team. Finally, follow your gut. Companies are successful if the timing is right. Of course, the team is important, cash is important, product is important, but the most important is the timing. The way to figure that one out is to speak to experts in the space and to follow your gut.

Your startup's valuation is under scrutiny by venture capital firms. How will you prove your worth?
Dependent on the maturity of the startup, but my experience is that it is always best to avoid discussions about valuation by using the SAFE type of approaches as so successfully used by Ycombinator. I have also used these approaches for much more mature companies, even when merging companies with totally different assets (eg an IP based company with no tangibles and a manufacturing company with very solid tangible asset base). SAFEs with caps and floors usually do the trick. It avoids a lot of frustration and emotion. Plus it properly aligns all interests.
