When working alongside team leaders & team members, an area they often express an interest in more fully exploring is team dynamics and how can it be enhanced? I practice systemic team coaching, which involves coaching a team as a whole within its broader system (organizational, cultural, & environmental contexts) - this work includes developing a positive team dynamic. Sometimes I notice teams failing to take deliberate action for creating a positive team dynamic - they are busy trying to create value while doing their jobs - and allowing it to develop ad hoc, without purpose or intention. This can, in turn, lead to a sub-optimal operating environment, preventing the team from achieving its objectives and stakeholder expectations. Through open, direct, and courageous dialogue, teams take time to explore how their team's dynamic can foster better decision making, improve collaborative problem solving, and, by coming to fully understand and appreciate their dynamic, work together better. Establishing positive team dynamics requires deliberate and daring work. Some of the questions I use to open up and explore team dynamics are: - What are the team’s core values? - How do team values influence decisions? How does the team stay aligned to them through thick and thin? - How do individual team member’s goals align with the team’s goals? How does alignment, or misalignment, to them impact team dynamics? - What roles and responsibilities does each team member have? Are they clearly stated? Have they been agreed to? - How do power dynamics play out with the team? - What are the written and unwritten rules guiding team behavior? These questions starts a dialogue, which in turn leads to other questions, which leads to further understanding and insights the team can use to positively achieve objectives more effectively and efficiently. What is the payoff of this work for the team? Specific benefits of this work includes: - Enhanced team member collaboration - Unleashed creativity and innovation - Improved internal communications - Higher team engagement and motivation - Better conflict resolution - Enhanced resilience and team adaptability - Higher team performance and productivity - Strengthened team trust and psychological safety, and - Better team alignment with organizational goals These questions help the team explore and create a positive team dynamic, fostering a more productive and harmonious work environment, while ultimately contributing to the overall success of the team and the organization. Do you know much your businesses produces in CO2e emissions? I recently attended the "How to tell your Sustainability Story" event hosted by the ever-knowledgable and inspirational Alex Pearson using the Small99 Carbon Reduction Action Box (CRAB). I became certified Carbon Literate a decade ago but it for sure pays to keep learning. As we near the end of the year and a natural time for pause and reflection, I am writing my business and personal goals for next year. One I hope to achieve before then is to move the rest of my personal banking to ethical banking providers, likely - Triodos. Using the CRAB, it was a stark reminder just how much of an impact decisions about who we bank with make. My business name wasn't just because I like the sound of the word. I'm a human being first and business owner second which means I am not perfect. But I strive every day in my work to conduct my business in line with my professional and personal values. I definitely don't always get it right and I may not always make the progress I wish for, but I keep trying. And when it comes to regenerating and protecting the world we live in and operating in ways that are right for people and planet, it's the small actions we take that make all the difference. ✍ Weeknote: 13th - 20th December 2024 🕯️ Happy Solstice! 🌀 Facilitation/ Consulting - A call with the social enterprise client with whom me and a collaborator are doing strategy readiness work, to agree Phase 2, starting in January. Beginning with a dedicated period of time for the founders to sense into the organisation's direction. It's so important for founders to honour their Source role, the capacity they have to listen to and translate vision - Many Foregather related chats, as we geared up to publish our Foregather Hartland reflections yesterday (see below). *I have 2 days per week of facilitation/ consulting capacity from March, get in touch if you'd like to explore working together* 🌿 Coaching - No client sessions, looking forward to all the chemistry sessions I have booked in January! - Supervision. We talked about "what does the world want from me?" It took us three months of reflection and integration to be able to write about this gathering. So I'm tucking those hints away for a leisurely reflection period over January, gearing up for my new year, which is Imbolc (1st February), the first day of spring in the Celtic calendar, when the tender little snow drops appear. How sweet it will be! - Feeling comforted by the Solstice and knowing that questions always surface when we go inward in the dark part of the year. Composting isn't a pretty process but it does create fertile soil in which to grow new things. Hope for 2025! I'm off this afternoon for a Solstice ceremony on Dartmoor, and a Solstice gathering tomorrow.
