🔍 MI5 Agent Controversy: Trying to understand why an abusive potentially dangerous individual could become an Agent of BSIS. The recent ruling by the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, allowing MI5 to neither confirm nor deny whether a man who attacked his girlfriend with a machete was an agent, raises significant questions about the complexities of intelligence work and the process of source validation. See BBC article here: https://lnkd.in/eBND3Jdk As a retired intelligence officer, I understand that identifying and recruiting a source involves more than just convincing them to provide information. It requires a continual and stringent process known as "Validation." This involves assessing the validity of the information they provide, verifying their claimed access, and ensuring they have the necessary skills to work as an agent. However, this case highlights a harsh reality: even with thorough checks on a source's background, criminality, and personality, it is impossible to predict all future actions. The individual known as "X" reportedly used his MI5 role to coercively control his ex-partner, Beth, and engaged in violent and abusive behavior. This raises critical concerns about the recruitment and handling of sources and the safeguards in place to prevent such individuals from causing harm. In intelligence collection, much like in life, knowing someone doesn't mean you know everything about them, and people can change over time. The allegations against X are deeply troubling and emphasize the importance of ongoing validation and monitoring of human sources. This case also underscores the challenging balance between national security and individual rights. The tribunal's decision to maintain the NCND (Neither Confirm Nor Deny) principle is rooted in protecting national security, yet it impacts Beth's ability to have a fair trial. The procedural safeguards mentioned are crucial, but they highlight the tension between transparency and security. As the full trial is scheduled for January 2025, it will be essential to closely follow the developments and reflect on the broader implications for intelligence practices and human rights protections. This is a positive step and shouldn't be limited to NHS data alone. Think of how much crime prevention can be achieved through access to Courts and policing records. Think of how much education outcomes could be improved with access to education department data. Think of how much data is collected by public institutions and how much can be learned to improve quality of life from these voluminous data stores. With the right data cleansing, anonymisation, and security measures in place, why not try to turbo-charge the potential life saving benefits that AI can deliver through access to these records? From my experience, our public institutions collect and sit on so much data, yet they do not share these with each other or even within the same organisation, let alone the public. https://lnkd.in/eD-UjVBD

I have realised that the NPP is either always busily deferring today’s problems into the future or discounting their promises to a past bench mark- the NDCs. It is obvious their score card isn’t based off on their own promises and failed assurances, but NDCs score card from 8yrs ago. Which unfortunately for them is still a better one than theirs of today! All they keep asking under accountability posts are what did NDC do what did NDC do!Dear NPP men of Valor what have you done is the question! What a conundrum they find themselves in methinks. Maaba ni am3 b3 subain nakain. NOTE: As the slide shows this data is at at December 2022, some of the indicators have worsened since- Cedi to Dollar is now 16 cedis plus.

ONEROUS CONDITIONS in PRISON (2024) #33 R v Price; Rahim;Taufahema [2024] NSWSC 1419 A well structured sentencing summary by Justice McNaughton, who specifically identifies the subject of 'Hardship in custody'. Why this is not a standard process involving custodial sentencing and the requirement to verify untested information in affidavit's via correctional authorities, continues to be a mystery to me. It appears that sentencing judgements and remarks are not uniform and in a number of judgements, appear to be ad-hoc and unverified evidence presented is not only accepted, but taken into consideration when calculating a custodial sentence length. (79) I accept that Ms Price’s experience in custody whilst bail refused had been additionally difficult because of a number of factors: Ms Price’s initial incarceration between 19 December 2019 and 10 November 2022 was her first time in custody and coincided with the most difficult phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. She spent 26 consecutive days in solitary confinement during the COVID pandemic; whilst she was housed in the Mary Wade Correctional Centre, a fire broke out in the wing and she reports she suffered smoke inhalation and also saw other inmates with burns and injuries; her maternal grandfather died and he was like a “father figure” to her; Ms Price’s clinical symptoms for depression and stress are within the severe range, and her anxiety score in the extremely severe range, and she meets the criteria for PTSD; and (137) Dr Furst records that Mr Rahim claims to have additional stresses in custody arising from his PTSD which would “likely” make a custodial sentence more onerous for him. His situation also involves matters affecting his sense of safety, which I accept. It is put on his behalf that he has had his nose broken on two occasions but there is no evidence of this, and I cannot make a positive finding that this occurred. Further, as to his concerns about his safety, there is no objective evidence before me which indicates anything other than this issue seems to have been satisfactorily managed in a practical sense, and I am unable to place much weight on this factor. I take into account that he has been in custody during the COVID-19 lockdown and has spent 200 days in COVID-19 lockdown conditions. (234) I have set out in some detail Mr Taufahema’s experience of custody. There is no doubt that he endured, and is enduring, harsh conditions. Whilst I can give some weight to this in the overall sentencing exercise, such weight must be limited given that his onerous custodial situation has come about because of his behaviour. Whilst I acknowledge that there are underlying reasons for such behaviour, and that everyone, not least Mr Taufahema, would benefit from these issues being worked on with a view to resolving them, the current situation remains that custodial authorities have determined that he needs these strict custodial conditions #hardshipincustody #correctionalofficer #prisons

Recently the government announced a consultation on the subject of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) formally known as DLA. They suggested that it should be replaced with vouchers (removing the autonomy of disabled people) or one off payments for adaptations. This is a TERRIBLE idea to illustrate why PIP is important in made a video showing just some of the things I use my PIP on. If you watch to the end of the video you will see I spend my PIP on care costs, you may be thinking if an individual needs care that it is funded by social services. That is often not the case, in my case I pay all my own care costs and the only help I get with this is… you guessed it PIP! This video really is a drop in the ocean - it costs more to live as a disabled person. The British Police need to realise quite how brilliant they are. And right now how good a job you are all doing. This is NOT about the civil unrest but about the Police actions over the last few years... The core element to our job is not to fix society but to catch criminals and send them to court, to answer for what they have done. Sentences are shorter than they used to be. It is more difficult than ever to prepare a case file. With the 20,000 uplift in officers we still have fewer officers than we had in the year 2010. Our job is harder than it has ever been, the public are turning against us due to the inexcusable behaviour of few awful people who made it through a vetting system that is now being corrected. Without the public support how can we police by consent. With this and other challenges such as weak sentences and non stop mental health emergencies where we pick up the emergencies the struggling NHS mental health systems can't cope with; we move on, ever forwards, driven. The case files (paperwork to send a person to court) now being several times over more complex (and CPS can't accept a document over 1mb), the technology we rely on constantly fails, the mental health and other non crime work that takes the Police away from the primary function and the shorter and shorter sentences (issued and actual). Without a massive rise in population our prisons are full. An offender given 14 months for suffocation of one officer and biting another was out in four months, this anecdotal example is seen time and time again. But with the early releases and shorter sentences the prisons are still full. This is not because prisons are closing, or have fewer cells. This has one factor and one factor alone, the police are doing a good job. It can feel that the Courts are trying to cancel each case, but still we catch the criminals and bring them to justice. Two reports and an arrest each day was an old goal, but is no longer possible, yet the prisons are full. We are catching the criminals and putting them away and the proof of this is evident by the prisons. Don't let the bastards get you down.

The Local Government will not investigate corruption within a local authority when they consider it to be criminal. They also state that if a complaint is not brought to them within 12 months of occurrence the they have no powers to investigate. So a council can drag a matter for over a year giving you false assurance that they are investigating a matter and in reality do nothing. In such circumstances you have no redress other than to sue the council yourself at your own expense. Now you know why councils fail to investigate matters with expediency.
