TW: Topics of Suicide 10th September is World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s a chance to come together to raise awareness and campaign for better suicide prevention. This year, the Samaritans are encouraging people to talk more openly about suicidal thoughts. They are sharing tips on how to talk about difficult feelings if you’re the one experiencing them, or if you’re worried about someone else. You don’t have to be an expert, just being there to listen and showing you care can help someone work through what’s troubling them. You can read more about how to start a conversation on the Samaritan’s website Or, take a look at these conversation tips from MHFA England®. They’re encouraging us to talk about difficult feelings in the workplace. And hey, it makes sense as we spend a lot of time with our colleagues: 🔍 Learn to recognise the warning signs: watch out for changes in personality and behaviours. ❓Don’t be afraid to ask someone if they are thinking of suicide: this won’t make them more likely to have suicide thoughts. It’s the most important question you can ask. 👂 Listening helps people know you care: you don’t need to have all the answers. Thank them for sharing their feelings with you. ✅ Keep checking in: improvement does not mean that the risk of suicide is over. Most suicides occur within three months of the onset period of ‘improvement’. Suicide thoughts and behaviour can return at any point. 👐 Look after yourself: practise self-care following a suicide crisis. Seek professional help if needed. Know what to do in a crisis: if someone is at immediate risk of suicide, dial 999. If someone is having thoughts of suicide, encourage them to call Samaritans on 116 123, or text ‘SHOUT’ to 85258 Remember, you are not alone. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #InItTogether

In 2024, mental health concerns continue to be a growing issue across the UK. Language, inclusion and the pursuit of equality sometimes seems to evade some people, its like they do not want to see the disparities that occur within their areas of influence and that is very disheartening. Last month Ladi atteneded the Sport England Tackling Race and Racial Inequalities in Sport (TRARIIS) ‘Time for Change’ conference held at Leicester Tigers Rugby Stadium. One of his observations was that there are some really good intentioned people working in this space who are really trying to understand, be empathetic and offer allyship. The issue is for those senior leaders who weren’t at the conference in person or online. They hold the keys to setting the culture of their organisations and set the tone to the importance of this. If they are not present it makes this so much harder to tackle and the timeframes for action are stretched even further. Some people will be brave in this space and will be bold in their commitments and actions as quickly as possible, driving change for their organisations and the sector. However, there are still those who shy away from the subject for fear of ‘getting it wrong’ or not wanting their organisations to look bad. We say to those who feel like this nothing will change unless you embrace the uncomfortable, as leaders you need to get uncomfortable and face the fears you may have when tackling racism. Without you doing this, there is the distinct possibility of you being the barrier or problem to overcome. #EquailityInSport #EqualityDiversityInclusion

November is men’s mental health month. 🧠💭 Whilst mental health is a delicate and crucial topic for all genders, all year round, it’s still a present fact that stigma lies attached to men and their mental health challenges. 🤔 It’s vital to openly speak about this matter at a consistent, widespread capacity, with understanding and support at the heart of each conversation. Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind in England each year, according to Mind. Whilst in the US, more than 23% of adults experienced a mental health condition in 2022 (Forbes Health). There are many ways to improve our mental wellbeing but the role of sleep can often be overlooked. Getting consistently good quality sleep is so important. Poor sleep can impact our mental health and mental health conditions can lead to poor sleep - it can be a vicious circle! That’s why we have spent so many years researching and developing ways to improve sleep through scientific sound solutions. We continue to be inspired every day by users of our SleepEngine technology who have experienced improved sleep and better mental and physical wellbeing as a result. Yesterday Thinkers50 held an insightful live session discussing mental health, specifically managing anxiety, overwhelm, and the pressure to be perfect 🌱 In addition to the brilliant moderator Morra Aarons-Mele, three panelists shared their touching personal experiences with us. Although we wish we could recap everything that was said in one post, we'll have to do with three key messages: 🪴 Sanyin Siang We don't always value the things that come easily to us, which can make it difficult to see the things we're great at and appreciate these parts of ourselves. We need to discover what we can give to the world and the people around us while recognizing our inherent value. 🪴 Lenny Mendonca Issues with mental health are much like a physical injury: they take time to heal and they can significantly impact your daily life. However, mental health issues aren't as visible. Therefore, they need to be talked about in a way that helps others understand and opens the doors for help and support. 🪴 Julie Lythcott-Haims Be curious about what you need to feel loved, and where that need comes from. Also be curious about that of others so that you can help them feel loved and appreciated. Let's be there for ourselves and each other 🧡

On World Suicide Prevention Day, it is crucial to reflect on the pressing issue of youth suicide in the UK, especially in London where young people face significant mental health challenges. The most recent data reveals a concerning rise in suicide rates —the highest rate since 1999. Young people, especially those under 35, continue to be heavily affected, and suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in this age group​. Among the most affected groups are young men and LGBTQ+ youth, who face disproportionate rates of mental health struggles​. Charities like PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide estimate an average of five young people are taking their lives each day. At Spark!, we recognise the importance of being there for young people—not just through words, but through tangible actions. Our mission to empower young people extends beyond employability. We want to foster environments where they feel truly listened to, supported, and connected. By offering compassionate and attentive support, we can create safer spaces for open conversations and intervention before it’s too late.
