WAITING UNTIL JANUARY TO RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS..... WHY??? The budget as been announced now... it is what it is, but at least we know where the golf club stands in terms of additional costs. The mornings are brighter, meaning golfers can get out earlier.... and given the time of the year its not that cold (in some places anyway) But for some crazy reason, SOME golf clubs start hitting the pause button on their membership recruitment processes. For no real reason seemingly? "We'll pick it up in January when the weather is better", “we’ll see where we are AFTER renewals have been done”, are two messages I got from prospects recently. BUT, there are actually some excellent reasons NOT to hold off. 1. Recruiting now is great as this safeguards any leavers – which all golf clubs will most certainly get 2. Potential members will be looking now as they have more time 3. It will take months to feed potential members the information they need to make that decision, start feeding them this now The misconception that there is always a better time to search for new members is fundamentally untrue. What is true is that golf clubs should ALWAYS be promoting their club, ALWAYS! Starting your membership plans ahead of the competition and induct your new members into the club to make them feel welcome, this will save a huge amount of time and money, get ahead of the game!

Applying Golf Lessons to Buisness Growth - Know your numbers On the brilliant programme Dragons’ Den, an area where many contentants come unstuck is when the panel quiz them on their numbers. On a golf course there are a whole variety of numbers to choose from, which starts at the scorecard. - The distance from the tee to the hole - The number of shots you can take to achieve par (excluding handicap) - Stroke Index - difficulty of the hole compared to the others on the course - Order of play. So we have our basic plan. - Also handy to know - is the average distance you can hit a ball with a particular club. - Many scorecards have a course map, so you can work out the best route for you to avoid hazards, this maybe different from your playing partner. If you play the same course regularly you will start to build a picture and hopefully improve, the scorecard being the cornerstone together with your handicap. This course will look in depth at the problematic issue of the employment status of Construction workers and what steps can be taken to protect the engager from a successful HMRC ‘status challenge.’ The course focuses on the tax deduction implications of HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme, which applies to mainstream contractors, Local Authorities and other businesses incurring substantial costs on ‘construction operations.’ HMRC imposes automatic penalties for late submission of monthly returns and penalties for other failures, including failing to deduct the correct amount from payments made to subcontractors. Problems continue to arise due to the failure of some businesses to register as a contractor and/or subcontractor, resulting in the failure to check the payment status of new subcontractors and to make deductions from subcontractors registered for payment under deduction and from unregistered subcontractors. Many businesses operating as contractors and subcontractors risk losing their gross payment status as a subcontractor if they fail to operate the scheme correctly and adhere to HMRC’s compliance test for the business and/or its proprietors. Who has come across the pressure performance curve? The curve shows the link between high performance and pressure and that elevated levels of pressure or stress can improve performance but when it becomes excessive this is when performance starts to reduce. The is one of the areas I explored in a session with Anwen Bottois from Purple Sky Consulting - Leadership Success: Transitions, Development and Coaching yesterday. The aim of the session was to get leaders to think about their wellbeing and how they can prioritise this so they can be at their best both at work and outside of work. The key thing for me when talking about this curve is that when we get to that tipping point our ability to cope decreased quickly and we need to understand what it is we need to do to reduce some of that pressure and strain. Doing more doesn't equal being more productive and we need to balance periods of pressure and stress with periods of recovery. What a start to 2025!!! I just returned from an incredible trip to Tenerife, where I had the privilege of working with the Hull KR Rugby team to prepare for the upcoming season. Having collaborated with the Rovers for nearly a decade, I can confidently say this year’s experience was one of our best yet! In the weeks leading up to our trip, I set a unique challenge for the players: to bring a map, gaffer tape, two plastic milk cartons, and some tie wraps. My goal? To recreate the feeling of performance anxiety. The players knew the sessions would be tough, but the purpose behind the materials remained a mystery. Day 1, kicked off with just a map. Meeting at the hotel reception at 6:00 AM, we embarked on a walk to the beach, where a coach awaited us. As we boarded and handed in our phones, the atmosphere was electric with curiosity. The bus took us to what I believe is one of the best boxing gyms in Europe. The session was intense and set the tone for the week ahead (details remain confidential!). On Day 2, the mystery continued. Again at 6:00 AM, we met at the beach, where I revealed the next challenge: build two rafts that float using the items they brought. This activity required organization, leadership, teamwork, and belief in one another. Elliot Minchella emerged as a fantastic team captain, taking charge and asking if he could use materials he found on the beach. He creatively incorporated sun loungers into the raft design, organized two teams, and assigned roles to everyone. Their belief in the project paid off—the rafts floated successfully! At the end of our journey, I shared a powerful lesson: “Day 1 was about being tough. Day 2 was about being smart. Because sometimes it’s not smart to be tough; it’s tough to be smart. If we have both, we will be twice as good as everybody else.” As we gear up for the season, I’m more excited than ever to see how these valuable lessons translate on the field.
