Best and worst mobile service providers in the UK "Which?" a non-profit organization that acts as the UK's consumer champion, reveals the Best and Worst mobile service providers in the UK from its latest user satisfaction survey. The organization asked 3,739 mobile customers in January 2024 what they thought of their mobile service provider, with scores based on satisfaction, how likely they’d recommend the service, and other factors such as value for money and network speed. https://lnkd.in/gS_xrtWa As usual, the best spots went to those operating as mobile virtual network operators (#MVNO) with Tesco Mobile - a joint venture between Tesco Plc Group and Virgin Media O2 - ranked best overall with 83%. However, "Which?" did not provide Tesco Mobile with the "Recommended Provider" badge because only Tesco Clubcard-connected plans avoid inflation-based mid-contract price rises. Ranked second was Smarty with 82%. Smarty is a sub-brand of Three. giffgaff which is marketed as a MVNO but owned by and use the network of O2 scored 80%. Talkmobile (79%), VOXI by Vodafone (77%), iD Mobile (77%), Lebara (76%) and 1pMobile (72%) followed - beating the major traditional mobile operators who all performed poorly for value for money. Firmly rooted to the bottom of the list with the worst score was Three UK, with the lowest rating of just 60%. The smallest of the Big Four networks, received only two stars in all categories. Nearly half (46%) of Three customers reported having a problem in the past 12 months. This compares poorly to top-performing service providers such as iD Mobile and Tesco, where only 11% and 12% of customers had issues. Vodafone and EE managed four star rankings for their network reliability, but overall scores were dragged down by poor feedback on other aspects. https://lnkd.in/gDd5a9XZ

This is mainly due to affordability and is mirrored on the broadband side, with over 75% of UK households now subscribing to services that cost less than £28 a month (Uswitch). Recently, I signed up for the #SmartPhoneFreeChildhood campaign, an excellent initiative led by Joe Ryrie, Daisy Greenwell, and their team. As a firm believer in delaying smartphone ownership until a sensible age, I felt compelled to support this cause. My older children didn't receive phones until they were 14, and their school had a strict policy of handing in phones at reception at the start of the day, only to be collected at the end. However, we made the mistake of giving our 12-year-old a smartphone, and now it’s proving to be a real challenge to take it away. I recently read an article in The Guardian stating that only 3% of 12-year-olds in the UK don’t own a smartphone. The statistic that 97% of 12-year-olds, and even 44% of 9-year-olds, have smartphones is quite startling. https://lnkd.in/e9R7B6Yu Taking a smartphone away from a 12-year-old is no easy task, especially with the peer pressure they face in secondary school. After conversations with my children, I understood how tough it can be. As parents, we shouldn’t have given in to the temptation of passing down our old phones, or upgrading with offers from mobile operators. I tried offering my 12-year-old a smart watch alternative, or just a basic Nokia phone as a replacement for their iPhone (which I’m perfectly content to use myself), but that idea was quickly rejected. I didn’t want my child to be ridiculed by peers at school. Despite understanding the issues with smartphones—such as anxiety, body image pressures from social media, cyberbullying, and online harm—peer pressure is a difficult battle for a 12-year-old, particularly when schools encourage digital devices for homework and other tasks. In the end, we found a compromise. We provided a no-data SIM card with unlimited calls and texts. Coupled with the parental controls from Gigabit IQ, we’ve blocked all social media apps and restricted access to age-appropriate content when using Wi-Fi at home. This solution works for us. The smartphone essentially becomes a basic phone without data outside the home, but we can still communicate via unlimited calls and texts. At home, we manage the Wi-Fi with our #FamilyGuard+ parental controls, ensuring a safe online environment for all devices. Electronic health records = electronic crime reports / case files etc. Wearable devices that can remotely monitor patients = electronic monitoring (prevention or offender). Integrated Care System collaboration to enable data-sharing = Data sharing between Community Safety Partnerships, MASHs, ROCUs, CJS, etc. Helping digitally excluded people to download and access the #NHS app to self-serve = Helping digitally excluded people to protect themselves from online fraud etc. Outcomes for real people who rely on public services, underpinned by core technologies. It’s got to be about getting the #basics right to allow for true and impactful innovation.
