Oceana threatens legal action over harm to UK seas from latest offshore oil and gas licensing Oceana UK is preparing to take the government to court over the severe threat to marine life caused by the latest licences for oil and gas exploration in UK waters. The decision to issue the new licences was unlawful on several grounds, says the charity, including a failure to consider the extreme impacts of both accidental oil spills and the climate crisis on marine life. In addition, both the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) ignored advice from independent government experts about the potential effect on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Oceana claims.  Represented by the environment team at law firm Leigh Day , Oceana UK has written to Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho, setting out its concerns and signalling the start of the judicial review process.  Some 82 licences for exploratory oil and gas drilling operations were issued by NSTA between October 2023 and May 2024. The licences cover 226 areas (blocks), and over a third overlap with MPAs.  Oceana UK says the ‘Appropriate Assessments’ for the blocks, published by the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) for the Secretary of State under the Habitat Regulations 2017, were unlawful. LR signs MoU with H2Terminals and partners on UK green hydrogen Lloyd's Register has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with H2terminals Limited and its supply chain partners, HiDROGEN and D3IM to assess the feasibility of a green hydrogen (H2) infrastructure project in the UK. Parties will collaborate in the fields of floating production and transport of H2 and identify regulatory requirements, including safety cases and risk assessments, for the development of an offshore island and supply chain that will provide green power to businesses on the Thames Estuary and River. The project, along with the businesses it will support, forms part of the private sector-led Thames Estuary Growth Board action plan, which aims to attract investment and development to the Thames Estuary area. Plans include the development of a wind, wave and solar energy plant located 100 km offshore. Green H2 generated on the floating island will be converted into its liquid state and transported by ship to a terminal on the Thames Estuary near London. From there, the H2 is transferred to floating barges where it will be converted to electricity and hot water, along with byproducts created through the conversion process such as liquid nitrogen and oxygen. Batteries installed on the barges will store the electricity whilst it travels to its point of use. The MoU also includes a formal assessment of technology, including the development of asset designs, qualification of containment systems, and floating hydrogen production and floating energy export systems. Assets planned for this project include approved materials capable of holding and insulating the green liquid H2 at -253C. Furthermore, the MoU will define an assurance programme for floating hydrogen production, hydrogen ships, classification and energy export systems. #hydrogen #thames #socsea24

The time absolutely flew by, but I think we managed to get into plenty of detail as to why competency management is such an important topic. If I were to try and draw it all together I would say it is about being really purposeful in your approach to your people. Looking at your goals, what your customers and other stakeholders want to see from you and then understanding what you need from your people to get there. The creating a transparent framework that makes clear what competencies people need to have and what is expected from them. As always with CMS the wins shone through, safety management, performance, facilitating career progression and succession planning. Building and retaining talent. Evidencing your success to third parties. Its all there. So the big question is why doesn't everyone do it? For most it's not knowing where to start. The UK maritime sector risks falling behind other transport industries in its decarbonisation efforts, according to a group of shipping trade associations, including the UK Chamber of Shipping. If the shipping industry is to progress towards net zero at the speed and scale required, the 2019 Clean Maritime Plan must be replaced with a comprehensive multi-year policy that better incentivises the shift. NatPower Marine has plans to invest in ports across the UK, breaking down barriers for the industry to enable a more rapid shift. Operational changes due to the potential USEC strike are now coming into effect. ONE – and hence also some THE Alliance services – are now going to omit some port calls and discharge cargo in alternate ports in the coming week to ensure the cargo gets off the vessel prior to ports closing. This applies to 5 different vessels arriving in the coming week on the Asia-USEC EC1, EC2 and EC5 services and the West India – USEC WIN service. ONE state they will make an effort to move the cargo inland to conclude the movement, but also recommend importers to pick up their cargo in the alternate locations. For exports from the omitted ports, cargo will be shifted to other services in those ports where possible. If that is not possible cargo will be rolled to next vessel on the service where it is booked – which in all likelihood will then only be after a strike is concluded. Many ports on the US East Coast have now published contingencies which include extended gate hours in the next 9 days prior to the potential strike. Shippers would be well advised to closely monitor, and use, these options where possible. If the strike does go ahead there will be no possibility to get access to cargo remaining inside the terminals, and for reefer cargo the terminals will not be able to guarantee conditions for the reefers. Many carriers have issued information on how detention and demurrage will apply during a strike. For the most part detention and demurrage will not accrue for days where terminal closure prevents pickup/redelivery of containers, but make sure you read the fine print – especially in cases where you might not be able to redeliver empties at a terminal, but where depot locations outside of ports are available. In little over a week, the next MEPC meeting will be held in IMO to work on new environmental regulations. This is also why in the past few days we have seen an uptick in environmental messaging from a number of shipping lines and maritime stakeholders. It is clear that there is a particular focus on a path forward to provide more regulatory “push” to support decarbonization from some of the more progressive shipping lines. A combination of tightening regulation and the trend towards #ESG reporting are creating market pressure for #supplychain due diligence and transparency across many sectors. The #maritime industry is no different. Despite some residual cynicism around the topic of ESG in the #shipping industry, vessel operators are beginning to address it with greater seriousness. Crown Estate Invests £7.3 Million to Propel Offshore Wind Initiatives and Marine Ecosystem Protection The Crown Estate has committed an impressive £7.3 million (€8.76 million) to fund five research projects. These initiatives aim to fast-track the UK's journey to a net-zero energy system while safeguarding marine ecosystems, reflecting the growing need to balance renewable energy development with environmental stewardship. The projects address critical challenges posed by offshore wind farms. They seek to fill knowledge gaps about their environmental impacts, propose strategies to mitigate those effects, expand access to marine data, and explore synergies like co-locating fisheries with wind farms.  Among the funded projects is the innovative Disco Scallops, which has already demonstrated a 500 percent increase in scallop catch through a new low-impact fishing method. This research supports static fishing techniques in areas typically off-limits to mobile fishing, such as marine protected zones and offshore wind farms. The ECOCHANGE initiative aims to understand how offshore wind farms alter marine ecosystems. Along the way, I’ve learnt a few things and been reminded of a few more: 💡 Start with your customers. Obsess over their needs. Listen to their challenges. Build something that solves their problems so well, they wonder how they ever managed without it. 🔍 Know your market. Competition, market forces, trends—it all matters. Stay sharp, stay curious. 🤝 Get in the trenches with your team. You can’t delegate your way to greatness. The magic happens in the details, working side-by-side with engineering, product, and sales to nail it all. 🗣️ Listen to your front line. Yes, sales colleagues are loud most of the time, but if you sift through the noise, you’ll find pure gold in their feedback. They’re closer to the market than anyone—ask them the right questions, listen, and fix what needs to be fixed. ✍️ Document and challenge everything. Feedback, ideas, assumptions—leave no stone unturned. That’s how a “good enough” product becomes something truly exceptional. And most importantly, leave your ego at the door! And the big one: you don’t build a product alone. It’s a team effort, through and through. Every milestone we’ve hit this year is a testament to the energy, creativity, and resilience of the people I’m lucky to work with. To everyone who’s been part of this journey: thank you. 🚢 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗿𝗮 – 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗞 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 🚢 Gardline colleagues Rory McNally and Steven Rick had the pleasure of attending the first ever Shipping UK conference in Westminster this week, organised by the UK Chamber of Shipping The groundbreaking event brought together stakeholders to discuss the future of the maritime industry with three underlying themes: ✅Decarbonisation of shipping ✅Vessel autonomy ✅Attracting new talent to the industry Louise Haigh MP delivered a keynote speech highlighting the government's commitment to decarbonising the shipping industry as part of the Maritime 2050 initiative but emphasized the ongoing challenges surrounding future fuels. Vessel autonomy was a hot topic. No doubt remote and autonomous operations will attract younger talent, albeit decades into the future. More pressingly, the UK industry needs 2,000 cadets annually, but current levels are only half that. At Gardline, we are committed to addressing these challenges head-on. We have already made strides in enhancing connectivity offshore, and we are dedicated to being involved in collaborative efforts to drive solutions within the industry. Our focus on innovation and sustainability ensures that we are well-positioned to adapt to the evolving maritime landscape. #ShippingUK

Following the conclusion of the International Maritime Organization's MEPC 82, we welcome the outcomes and look forward to continuing to accelerate the decarbonisation of the shipping industry. Our key takeaways from this event: - Clarity on carbon pricing is expected by 2025, with significant implications for the shipping industry's decarbonisation strategies and operational costs. - The IMO Net-Zero Framework is gaining traction and could define future emissions standards for the maritime sector. - Industry groups continue to push for a review of CII, which may lead to changes in how emissions efficiency is measured. Stronger policy that incentivises the shift to green shipping will be essential to helping drive investment in renewable energy infrastructure at ports around the world. This in turn will promote shore power systems for docked vessels and support the development of more green shipping corridors. MEPC 82 has put us another step closer to net zero shipping. However, the road ahead remains challenging and continued collaboration will be essential to achieve these goals. We remain committed to driving innovation and funding key renewable energy infrastructure that will help shape a cleaner, greener shipping industry.
