Monika Calay, Director, Manager Research UK, joined a panel at Fund Forum yesterday discussing 2024 distribution trends including tech platforms, ETFs, and customisation using technology. She said:“In 2022, we launched the first UK Managed Portfolio Database, giving us an unprecedented look under the hood of managed portfolios. Our research uncovered around 1,200 managed portfolios in the UK, with the vast majority being multi-asset offerings primarily comprised of mutual funds. Interestingly, ETFs make up about 12% of these holdings, while single stocks account for just 1%. Index funds feature prominently, playing their role as low-cost building blocks. We’ve seen a notable increase in the use of passive investments. From 2018 to 2022, there was a surge in managed portfolio launches, but this momentum slowed in 2023, which may suggest that the market is maturing.”

Great piece here from 'JB' Beckett, looking at how the lanscape has evolved for portfolio products within advisers' CIPs: https://lnkd.in/euUrRtTN Very timely from my selfish perspective, as exploring this in a forthcoming series of presentations (see graphic). The *really* interesting thing is the CGT cat 😼 that's recently been thrown among these pigeons through reduced CGT-free allowances (a cat that might become even more bloodthirsty in forthcoming budgets...) Unitisation, in some form or other, puts control back in the hands of the adviser and the client, whereas the 'classic' ununitised MPS model, in many cases, will likely end up triggering unexpected tax bills for clients holding it outside of a tax wrapper. This is one of the reasons why, when I set up Downing Fox, I went the fully unitised route. I just think it's cleaner and simpler. Anyway, this one's set to run and run. If you want to get up to speed on it, you could do a lot worse then reading JB's excellent potted history.
