If your main metric for success for design systems is measuring adoption, then consider this: Adoption does not equal value. Value is better communicated by money saving or money generated when it comes to organisations. This can be calculated by time savings for example. Adoption only tells you how much it is being used - without the former you cannot realise the scale of value. #designsystems #design #designmatrics

So glad I managed to attend UX Brighton on Friday. Top notch speakers for an obvious but tricky theme: UX & AI. Some personal highlights: - Pablo Stanley's contagious energy, humour and eye-candy slides somehow managed to show really practical "why did I put this button here" advice. Proper Design class! >> check his Lummi app https://www.lummi.ai/ - Maggie Appleton perfectly encapsulated why AI is breaking the free Internet and what possible (mostly-depressing) futures await us. PS: it's all here >> https://lnkd.in/ek6wJ6V8 - Glenn Jones's text-to-functional-UI demo left some speechless. A glimpse into a future of use-once UIs generated on the fly. - Hannah Beresford's solid research work laid out why AI tools don't work yet and what to do about it. - Will Taylor's historical framework was the perfect conference intro and a useful tool to clarify "which AI for which situation". A few reflections: - There are identified ways make chatbot-style AI UIs more usable... but the single box to "ask anything" is far from the being the most useful interaction paradigm. - AIs are rubbish at context, societal norms and verbal cues. It's best to think of them as a smart alien rather than a human. - Data-led products, like AI-driven ones, need to be user tested in context, with real data. Smoke & mirrors prototypes or static mockups are pointless. - It did made me want to work on AI products and try more AI tools! - Also, not one mention of sustainability?? It feels like the elephant in the room. 🎈💥 Busting top 5 myths about #accessibility by Barclays 1) My users don't complain about accessibility, so we must be doing O.K. 2) But fixing accessibility is expensive, isn't it? 3) But 'accessibility', it's not really my job, is it? 4) The market is just too small to justify all this time and effort. 5) But accessible design means boring design.

Interesting take from Scott Jenson, the first member of the System Software Human Interface group at Apple in the late 80s, working on System 7 operative system in the period of Jobs absence: "The one thing I'd add is that the zeitgeist has shifted and many of the UX problems feel 'sorted', i.e. there are only so many ways you can do a restaurant app. In the early heady days of mobile, we'd argue for hours if the menu should be on the right or the left. That just feels like an issue people are willing to just accept as sorted. I'd argue this is a false sense of completeness. Just because we have mature design systems doesn't mean we understand the user and most importantly, what they need before and after they interact with our product. We're constantly being told to 'work with the business' which implies doing EXACTLY this flow. Of course, start with this flow to engage, but do whatever you can to expand that flow and add additional research/testing/insights as you can. When I was in London at Symbian, we called this "sneaking drugs in their tea". If done right, the team will learn it's important. It's a shame we have to be so sneaky about it, but in the end, it's one way to build credibility and influence."

Lots of my connections share Tom's view. I don't. I don't disagree about £65k being a threshold figure. I think he's wrong to use any figure an label it over or under payment. Sure, lots companies don't get design. You're a senior. You have the experience to recognise that working for one of them would be 💩. So, ignore them. The others do get design. They're setting-out expectations for a role and a salary they're willing to pay for it. It's not underpaid, it's market conditions. As a designer, you get to decide if you're willing to accept those terms. £45k too low for you? Keep searching. Meanwhile, someone else will take that job and it might change their career. There's nothing underpaid or overpaid about it. Let's stop the entitled "Pay me this because last year, my mate was getting the same". Want to earn more? Go find a way to earn more.

Accessibility Consultants & User/UX Researchers There's an interesting dynamic I'm spotting in the job market currently. While Accessibility Best Practices and Qual and Quant Research Methodologies are becoming more stringent in Product Designer job descriptions, these disciplines more commonly are becoming designated roles within organisations. Clearly, the voice of the user and accessible design are coming to the forefront of design strategies. However, it looks like there are two schools of thought emerging as to whether we tack these on to Product Designer job descriptions, or bring in specialists. What do you folks think? Personally, I'm of the view that Designers should at least have a knowledge of these disciplines, but you always run the risk of them being spread too thinly with all the other responsibilities associated with their roles. #ucd #accessibility #research Salt

Designing #highperforming teams is both challenging and rewarding for any #designOps practitioner. It involves identifying how teams are organised, defining each team's unique contribution, and understanding how to maximise the impact of each team's contribution. Yet identifying and categorising how #Design, Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams operate both internally and cross-functionally can be difficult. This is where the Team Topologies becomes a great approach to understand teams' archetypical structures and operational models. "Team Topologies" by Skelton & Paiswith, is a book that defines four team types three interaction modes per team. Such a clear simplification allows any Design Operation practitioners to analyse and dissect their teams and design new cross-functional engagement models across Product, Design, Engineering, and Development.
