Sifted's April’s early-stage funding wrapup — what did we find? 👉 Deal activity for Europe’s early-stage startups was down in April; VCs invested €1.4bn spread across 312 pre-seed, seed and Series A rounds last month 👉 The UK maintained its early-stage crown for funding in Europe (€314m), followed by France (€272m), then Germany (€211m) 👉 B2B SaaS, climate tech and healthtech took the top three spots, pulling in €345m, €333m and €315m respectively. 👉 It was a big month for healthtech, as drug discovery and biotech took the first two spots, pulling €138m and €135.2m respectively Plus, we share 12 early-stage rounds that caught our eye... #funding #venturecapital #VC

VC funding continues to fall amid dearth of late-stage rounds. 📉 Venture capital (VC) funding in the UK has dropped for the third consecutive quarter, with minimal rounds taking place for later-stage companies, new data has shown. VCs invested £2.4bn into UK tech firms in the first quarter of the year, according to the European Venture Report from PitchBook. Doccla Secures £35m Series B to Revolutionize Virtual Healthcare London-based health tech startup Doccla has raised £35m in a Series B funding round led by Lakestar. Founded in 2019 by Martin Ratz after a personal health experience, Doccla offers constant virtual monitoring for patients, allowing medical staff to track real-time updates on their conditions. Initially launched in Sweden, Doccla expanded to the UK in 2020, with a pilot ward during the Covid-19 pandemic. The company now partners with the NHS and international healthcare providers, delivering tech-enabled virtual wards that enhance patient recovery at home while freeing up hospital resources. Ratz expressed excitement about scaling operations across Europe and expanding into the Life Sciences sector. Growth investor IW Capital is to launch a £30 million fund backing UK SMEs following the successful completion of a management buyout. Existing director and established dealmaker Tariq Attia becomes CEO, with experienced entrepreneur and private equity investor Alan Armstrong named chairman. IW Capital invests patient capital in growing businesses, backing experienced management teams across a range of sectors, with drivers including technology, environmental impact, healthy living, demographic change and education. The launch of the new Growth fund will enable IW Capital to invest larger cheques in businesses that have proven their model and are ready to scale at pace. Core to IW Capital’s success is the significant commercial support provided to the portfolio, leveraging both the entrepreneurial experience within the investment team and the significant strength of its investor network.
