Technical Leadership… is there a difference? I am a firm believer that the requirements of leadership are shaped by your audience and the environment. Whilst it is important to be able to pivot when the direction is not driving results; frameworks can be a supportive tool. 📝 Mission Command is a methodology used within the British Army which focuses leadership upon a model of decentralised command. Through empowering the staff to form their own decisions and courage to deliver their own work to the capacity that is available to them at the time. 📝 Mission Command at its best survives chaos and uncertainty - what better fit for a start/scale up business. Thoughts #1 : Time Technical teams can often habituate delivery through automation or drop off (a link, a service, a report). Whilst time is often a commodity those who are in receipt of an accompanying delivery pitch will be much more comfortable in the use of their product. 🕰️ During my time on Op Herrick 17 we were conditioned to report back to the BGE (Battle Group Engineer) with a briefing format - this was designed to be short and informative, punchy but clear. This provided the confidence for the product to be used to full effect whilst leaving the curator a sense of pride in their work, immediate feedback, experience under pressure and you would hope, an opportunity for praise. The lesson I ask you to take away here is to trust your staff to deliver, to encourage verbal delivery of technical outputs alongside their result and if you are in receipt of work then to give time for feedback and praise, even if it is only 150 seconds… the simple reward of given someone your time will develop the relationship which almost always increase the standard of future delivery.

Wakey-Wakey... We have been talking about this for way too long. According to the asa.org.uk website "We respond to concerns and complaints from consumers and businesses and take action to ban ads which are misleading, harmful, offensive or irresponsible." How can we stand by and permit "misleading" fibre branding of copper based broadband products to continue. The evidence is abundant, this practice is confusing, lowering adoption, and placing FTTP investment at risk. #fullfibre #fibre

Day 5 of the search for a new contract/clients:   WOW! What a day, it’s been hectic and long but a real motivator. As always, I have been working for the current client and making real progress in some key work. I started early and just finished so that’s been brilliant.   I also managed to do the following: ·       Get a walk or two in (very important – fresh air to the brain really does put me in a good mood!) ·       Updated my LinkedIn profile to reflect my CV! It’s a small thing but one I easily forget. I always update my CV without fail and take pride in it, but I never take the same care to my LinkedIn profile. ·       Applied to a few opportunities via my old faithful technique, Jobserve. When I do this I have one rule, no filters! By that I mean, no job title search. If you just search for Project Manager roles, you will only see Project Manager roles. If you leave that filter blank, you get to see loads more and that’s when you find the hidden gems! ·       I’ve reached out to various people and connections. This is why networking skills are the most important you will ever have. ·       Finally, I have taken more notice of the jobs available on LinkedIn. I have never had to before but I am loving to use the platform as a great little tool.   I am still in that stage where it is quiet and I’ve just got started. It’s hard because it’s the summer and holidays always slow things down. But I am optimistic and really upbeat, a combination of anxious about and excited at the same time about the possibilities. So hopefully this will keep up.   Quick update about my targets: 1.       Work flat out to the end of my current contract and ensure my client is in an amazing position - I am going to sprint over this finish line and feel really confident! 2.       Find a new client and new opportunity and rebuild my client list – See above. 3.       Continue with my investment path which is always growing – had a really good week last week for investments thank to a spur on the S&P 500. Lets hope that lasts. 4.       Create a new stream of income that also supports the charities and people around me (watch this space) – I am still weighing up the platform I want to use. One is easier to get started but my preferred one sticks in my mind. I need to get a move on and discuss that with another contact because the idea is controversial but has my target audience on it. I need to sit down tonight and think this through carefully. 5.       For fun, a £10k challenge – 5% achieved already. Bit of a result. I hope things keep going that way and I will hit my target in no time at all!   In the meantime, if you need any support with anything, job hunting, money woes, mental health relating to your work and your job hunt. Valuations of Software Businesses: A Thought Piece The valuations of software businesses have experienced volatility, returning to approximately 2018 levels. However, high-quality assets continue to attract high valuations and transact more quickly. Generative AI is driving both efficiency and top-line growth, reinforcing software's central role in transformation. We anticipate an increase in M&A activity. UK technology companies, particularly in the software sector, are seeking global growth opportunities, including M&A in the US. After months of speculation BT Group has announced that it will delayed big Switch Off (turning off of all copper-based data and phone lines) UK wide until January 2027. This delays seem to mainly stem from general apathy across the country. With an understandable “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality from many customers and also a lack of digital availability in some areas. However moving is virtually pain free and customers moving are not only future proofing themselves and massively increasing speed and quality of internet services and capabilities for staff but are also migrating away from an ageing platform. It's important to remember that the PSTN is coming to the end of its serviceable life… Ofcom's Connected Nations UK Report 2023 states: In 2023 the number of PSTN incidents increased by 20% In 2023 there was a 60% increase in hours lost for customers on the PSTN. These statistics clearly show the urgency and necessity for businesses to transfer to the much more reliable (and easily fixed) IP-based network to avoid further disruptions and service quality issues. So I’ve got more time then? Short answer NO! The change is still happening because the change is being phased and the Jan 27 date is a final “we’ve finished” date. BT will continue switching off local telephone exchanges one by one and as each exchange is turned off more engineers are switched to the move and less are available for fixed on the old network. So unfortunately problems with the old networks will just keep getting worse. There is a positive to this… the upside as I mentioned is once businesses make the change they will experience faster more reliable internet and telecoms. We’ve been working hard to move our customers over and have had completely positive experiences.
