POSSIBLE ASHWAGANDHA BAN IN THE UK IN 2025 In the UK for the past 24 months we have been defending the safe use of Ashwagandha (also known as Withania somnifera) in food supplements. The issues in the UK started after a flawed DTU report that resulted in RASSF notification by Denmark in Feb 2022. Despite evidence to the contrary the UK are now requesting evidence to demonstrate safety that will go forwards to a risk assessment. I can say so far there has been no assistance to clients that faced enforcement action when carrying generic or branded forms of Ashwagandha. 🚀 **Innovative Ideas from the IFPA Conference!** 🚀 Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) event, and wow, what an experience! 🌟 One booth in particular caught my eye with their brilliant approach to an often-overlooked part of our produce: the broccoli stalk! 🥦💡 Thanks to Cathy Burns for introducing me to them. Instead of letting these nutrient-packed stalks go to waste, this team is exploring creative ways to utilize them. Think chips, fries, and more! 🍟🥦💚 🌟 **Why this matters:** Broccoli stalks are usually discarded or left in the field, but they’re full of vitamins, fiber, and flavor. By turning them into tasty snacks or ingredients, we’re not just reducing waste—we’re also creating exciting new products that can add value to our food systems. 🔍 **My thoughts:** This is exactly the kind of innovative thinking we need in the food industry. Not only does it help the environment by reducing waste, but it also offers consumers new, healthy options. I’m definitely on board with experimenting in the kitchen using broccoli stalks. FOOD SAFETY: RAT INFESTATION forces supermarket to shut as inspection finds 'poor hygiene levels' Under food hygiene regulations Waltham Forest Council has served a hygiene emergency prohibition notice to temporarily close the Morrisons store in Chingford. Any further comment would be inappropriate as a potential court case is pending. But Morrisons commented. "We have Rentokil on site now to investigate the reported pest issue and hopefully we'll have the store open again very soon." It is interesting to note that the Morrison's branch was previously given a 5 rating in its food hygiene rating - indicating "very good" when last inspected in December 2022. The report also gave a "good" rating for the supermarket's cleanliness. It included “Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene.” The report also said “System or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to ear, evidence that staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.” A reminder to us all of the importance of effective pest control. It is a real challenge for the food sector, but there is support out there. I believe that we have one of the best retail sectors in the world. But we must be on our guard . Most don't know about the big gaping hole in the world of sugar reduction 🍬 but it's plain as day when looking at supermarket aisles 👀. That's sugar reduction in food versus beverages. 🥤 Sugar-free mainstream beverages have been a commercial reality for decades. And they're really pervasive right now. 🍩 But still today the same thing is not true of mainstream food. To date, sugar regulations and taxes have almost exclusively focused on beverages. But not because that's where the damage is. Most sugar in people's diets is in food - can be 4x more! Rather, it's because there has been no mainstream solutions to the problem. Well, the avalanche 🏔 is finally here - and falling on both sides of the Atlantic. FDA recently announced a drive to enforce mandatory warnings for high sugar on all food products USDA recently announced a decision to limit added sugars in all school meals. Now, World Health Organization wants the next UK government to expand coverage of the sugar tax to cakes, biscuits and chocolate. This is going to be a tumultuous time for the food industry. Britvic, a UK-based soft-drinks supplier, has rejected two takeover bids from Carlsberg Group. Carlsberg's latest offer, sent on June 11, was around £3.2 billion ($3.9 billion) for Britvic, or 1,250 pence per share. Britvic stated that the second proposal undervalues the company and its future prospects. Carlsberg, one of the world's largest brewers, believes that a deal would allow them to capture long-term growth opportunities from Britvic's leading brands in the beverage market. Carlsberg's acquisition aligns with their growth strategy to expand beyond beer. Carlsberg markets its own soft drinks, while Britvic handles PepsiCo's beverages in the UK and Ireland. Carlsberg takes a disciplined approach to evaluating acquisitions and will only proceed with a transaction that is strategically and financially attractive. If an offer is made, it is likely to be in cash and fully debt financed. The second offer for Britvic represented an implied enterprise value multiple of over 13 times Britvic's adjusted EBITDA. It also marked a premium of 29% to Britvic's closing price prior to press speculation. Both parties have stated that there is no certainty another offer will be made. In the first half of fiscal year 2024, Britvic reported a 10.9% increase in revenue, a 15.3% increase in EBIT, and a 10.1% rise in profit after tax. The company's revenue primarily comes from its business in Great Britain, accounting for 68% of its revenue. Britvic also operates in other markets, such as France and Brazil. As a brewing consultant I like to educate too. Often creating and giving out free guide likes this one... "Cheaters Guide to Describing Beer" I called it "cheaters" as it's my attempt to create a quick, simple and easy to read PDF. Which gives people descriptors they need to discuss beer like an industry veteran. 👉 Plus the basics as to why these flavors are in the beer. For instance... Have you've ever had a Corona smell odd? Well... Exposure light causes some of the essential oils from hops to break down into skunky-smelling sulfur compounds. "Skunky" (3-methyl-2-butene-1) thiols It's why most beer bottles are brown. So, less light passes through the glass effecting the beer. Corona being in a regular glass bottle allows more light to pass through it. 🤔𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿? This latest lager variant from Camden Town Brewery could well prompt that very question from consumers. 🌲It is 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 with a piney, citrusy flavour profile that many consumers will typically associate with pale ales or IPAs. 🍺But, 𝗶𝘁 𝗜𝗦 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 it has been fermented with lager yeast (and will likely have been fermented at a lower temperature than ales). 🇬🇧This isn’t a bad move from Camden Town given that the growth in lager in the UK is being driven by Spanish, Italian, and French brands (perceived as more premium) - indicating that 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄. 🧨This new lager isn’t like any of the fast growing continental brands, but it is brewed in the UK and it does offer consumers a markedly different choice in terms of flavour and ABV%. Recently, The Guardian published an article on ultra-processed foods that began with the advice, "avoid ingredients you don’t know." Really? Isn't it a bit arrogant to assume I know every ingredient and plant with a history of safe use around the world? Can I never try anything new? I genuinely can't see any benefit should people who don’t know what rutabaga is stop eating Branston pickle (especially if they eat swede 😉 ). Should people reject baked goods containing sodium hydrogen carbonate or potassium bitartrate simply because they are only familiar with baking powder? Far better advice would be to "get to know what you’re eating." Food, much like life, is complex, and dismissing things out of ignorance is not a helpful strategy.
