The opportunities of AI for scientific research are highlighted throughout this The Royal Society report and explored in depth through three case studies on its application for climate science, material science, and rare disease diagnosis. Alongside these opportunities, there are various challenges arising from the increased adoption of AI. These include reproducibility (in which other researchers cannot replicate experiments conducted using AI tools); inter-disciplinarity (where limited collaboration between AI and non-AI disciplines can lead to a less rigorous uptake of AI across domains); and environmental costs (due to high energy consumption being required to operate large compute infrastructure). There are also growing barriers to the effective adoption of open science principles due to the black-box nature of AI systems and the limited transparency of commercial models that power AI-based research. Furthermore, the changing incentives across the scientific ecosystem may be increasing pressure on researchers to incorporate advanced AI techniques at the neglect of more conventional methodologies, or to be ‘good at AI’ rather than ‘good at science’. These challenges, and potential solutions, are detailed throughout this report in the chapters on research integrity; skills and interdisciplinarity; innovation and the private sector; and research ethics.

🐱 Quantum Cheshire Cat Developments... 🐱 During my 3rd year at Uni, I embarked on a journey into the bizarre world of quantum mechanics, investigating the Quantum Cheshire Cat (QCC) effect in conjunction with the Three-Box Paradox. 🔬 I aimed to further explore these phenomena and dive deeper into the strange yet fascinating reality where a particle and its properties, such as spin, can seemingly separate and take different paths, like a cat disappearing but leaving its grin behind. 🐱✨ I showed mathematically that introducing a third pathway for the particle to travel, and given specific pre and post selection states the spin of a particle would "disappear" entirely. The entire premise relies on so called "weak measurements", which are a way to measure a quantum system without collapsing the wave function. Fast forward to today, it’s exciting to see that some of the very same questions I explored in my research are now being actively studied by physicists globally. If you cannot solve any real problems with your invasive BCI tech in a commercially viable manner, you instead establish a foundry that tries to sell parts and services to let others try to figure it out. This seems to be the commercial survival path for Science Corp., Blackrock Neurotech, Neuralink and others. How many patients will benefit? #BCI #NeuroTech

I haven’t shared much about Quantum Technology (QT)(Computing being my historical focus) in 2024. However, expect a lot more from me next year as we enter Unescos International Year of Quantum Science and Technology: https://lnkd.in/ezp-siJJ Whilst 2024 has rightly been about the evolution and application of ML at scale within AI, behind the scenes (in the back office, if you will), quantum technology, the number of stable qubits, and active still, I would argue “experimental” applications (CUDA-Q, Google’s Quantum AI close to milestone 3, IBM's first QT Soon be Heron-based EU data centre) have been quietly advancing, with some increasingly becoming production ready. 2025 promises to be a Stella year in the QT world, and I’m here for the ride. #IYQ2025

This is such brilliant news - and another reason why we should be excited about and embracing technologies like Ai rather than being fearful of them. Huge congratulations to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper their well-deserved recognition of being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for protein structure prediction with #AlphaFold, along with David Baker for computational protein design. AlphaFold exemplifies how AI can help us tackle one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: overcoming the limits to our knowledge. This is a monumental achievement for AI, for computational biology, and science itself. 🧬. We should all pause to reflect on this. As a parent, as a teacher, or anyone who cares about conditions like Parkinson's, Malaria or plastic in the ocean. AlphaFold is an advanced AI system that can predict the 3D structure of a protein in minutes, not years. Parkinson's, malaria, plastics in the ocean—these are all protein-related problems. "A new "toolkit" to repair damaged DNA that can lead to aging, cancer and motor neuron disease (MND) has been discovered by scientists at the Universities of Sheffield and Oxford. Published in Nature Communications, the research shows that a protein called TEX264, together with other enzymes, is able to recognize and "eat" toxic proteins that can stick to DNA and cause it to become damaged. An accumulation of broken, damaged DNA can cause cellular aging, cancer and neurological diseases such as MND. Until now, ways of repairing this sort of DNA damage have been poorly understood, but scientists hope to exploit this novel repair toolkit of proteins to protect us from aging, cancer and neurological disease." #aging #dna #longevity Liz Parrish MBA
