PODCASTS AS PORTFOLIOS Here, I made this! Podcasters create a body of work they can point to. It remains available and accessible far longer than most posts and outlasts the attention of Instagram etc. I am always amazed and delighted at how many episodes from my back catalogue are listened to each week. This is a great return on investment of time and effort. It also suggests we should make every episode the best we can, since it may be around for a while. How do we start? How do we keep going? Delivering Social Value in the UK is sometimes as much about what we don’t do as what we do. Especially when one considers the additional burden placed on all other businesses in the UK when some of the biggest companies don’t do their part - in fact they actively seek to avoid doing it. Not (yet) a fan of broad #AI generated ads and content, this article shook something in my mind and heart 🤔 It shows how AI-generated ads will enable #SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) to access a still-huge comms channel and audience that was unaffordable for them: TV 📺 The insight: “Too often the cost of making an ad is a barrier for brands looking to breakthrough and test TV” 💡 The facilitator (ITV): “By expanding our existing creative production services to include making ads with gen AI, we can democratise this further, and make the power of TV advertising accessible to all. Three conversations yesterday - one at Labour Conference and two at last night's dinner for the Princes Trust - have all got me thinking about the UK's ambitions in a global digital economy. The first, which took place at the meet-up for COSTAR in #Liverpool, was about the immense environmental and energy cost of AI. While I am firmly on the side of "AI brings astonishing new human capabilities", there is no escaping that the simplest interaction depends on a quantity of "compute" that could power an entire neighbourhood. The second was with a business leader in the AI space. I asked how the UK is doing in the global race for position in a "post-AI" world. His view is that we are doing really well in two specific areas - the deep engineering of Large Language Models and their practical application to specific business and public service needs. However, we are rapidly falling behind in the third, which is the building of UK digital infrastructure to sustain our own AI domain. The third was with a senior leader at one of the UK's leading green and renewable energy providers. They told me that next week our last remaining coal-fired power station will be shut down, marking the end of one era or energy use. Apparently, we now produce up to 42% of the UKs energy needs via renewables. Both conversations centred fundamentally on "sovereignty" - not in an isolationist sense, but in the sense of self-sufficiency. The energy leader and the AI leader were asking me for comfort from Labour Conference that we had the vision to accelerate now to ensure that the emerging Digital Industrial Revolution isn't choked off or left dependent on other nations infrastructure (with a matching loss of revenue). The same, by the way, is true of our video game industry - we must work with Government to take action today that will ensure not only that our UK industry thrives but also that all of the associated revenue and IP doesn't just leave the country and some of the value is fed back into our own ecosystem to foster the conditions for sustainable growth. So, can we? Are we capable of the vision and pace needed to meet our own data and energy needs in the coming decade? Can we build a globally-leading video game industry that maximises it's contribution to the UK's creative digital economy? Can we help policymakers to see that the time to put their foot on the gas isn't next year, or next Parliament, but right now? I really hope we can!

Woke up this morning and realised that it's ⏳ 10 YEARS ⌛ ago this month that I became self-employed. I've had some bits and pieces of part time, discrete, contract work with Arts Council England in the early days of freelancing, but amazing to look back and think about having sustained a successful (I've done well - why not own it?!) career for all that time, generating my own income and work. At the time, it didn't feel that radical to leave employed work for a more autonomous way of earning money. But now I look back and realise it was quite unusual to leave full-time employed work at the age of 27, when I had only graduated University 4 years earlier, aged 23. I had worked in a 'proper job' at a solicitors in a gap year I took before university, but it was still very early days to 'give up' working for, and being managed by, other people. It's only now, 10 years later, that I understand why I found a traditional organisational hierarchy and environment impossible. Earlier this summer, aged 37, I was diagnosed as being #autistic A couple of panic attacks before heading into the office (in one partiularly challenging role), feeling extremely misunderstood by several line managers, some communication misunderstandings and unpleasant incidents now make alot of sense! Not to mention more internal struggles with work such as concentration issues in open plan office environments, and fatigue from just the pure effort of it all. Self-employment for so many people, is a brilliant lifestyle choice that brings balance - but I think I've realised, that for me it was about survival. I think workplaces are becoming alot better at being able to flex to everyone's needs and preferences, and I think about that alot now that GoodCRM will continue to grow our team, so I am responsible for nurturing that culture. A huge thanks has to go to people that have had my back and worked with me so well, when I was completely oblivious to the fact that my brain was working a little bit differently to theirs... The biggest shoutout needs to go Dana Kohava Segal, who has worked with me in the most intense way for the longest! You're my ride-or-die work wife, and always will be the best of friends. Adam Cooper needs a very significiant mention for being a massive influence on me (and Dana) in shaping a caring and flexible working culture based on wellbeing first. Tom Cowle and the rest of the team at GoodCRM for making the current day-to-day working environment an open and honest one, which is judgement free and flexible, yet still very ambitious. Whilst I tend to be an oversharer in 1:1 conversation, this sort of personal post feels quite scary and vulnerable on a platform like this. But I'm trying to push out my comfort zone a bit more.
