📊 Games & Numbers (18.09.24 - 01.10.24) 🎮 PC/console games ◾️According to Video Game Insights estimates, Black Myth: Wukong is the best-selling game on Steam in 2024, with over 20 million copies sold. ◾️More than 14 million people have played Football Manager 24. This number reflects player counts, not sales, as the game was available through subscription services. ◾️The total sales of Ghost of Tsushima exceed 13 million copies. Recently, Sucker Punch announced a sequel to the series: Ghost of Yōtei. ◾️Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the second most successful new release in the European market in 2024. According to GSD, only Helldivers II performed better. ◾️The meditative platformer GRIS, published by Devolver Digital, has been purchased over 3 million times since its release in December 2018. ◾️Manor Lords has sold over 2.5 million copies since its release on April 16, 2024. ◾️Revenue from the VR shooter Ghosts of Tabor has surpassed $20 million, as reported by the developers themselves. ◾️In the first 3 days of sales, Frostpunk 2 sold 350,000 copies. ◾️Sales of Dragon Age: Inquisition has exceeded 12 million copies. In September, the game averaged $5 million per day. ◾️Total revenue for Pixel Gun 3D on all platforms since its launch in 2013 has reached $210 million, with over 220 million downloads. ◾️Revenue for AFK Journey in less than six months has amounted to $158.3 million, according to AppMagic. 🎮 The Uncertain Future of Live-Service Games? 🎮 Recent surveys among 600 developers have revealed significant doubts about the sustainability of live-service games, with 70% expressing uncertainty. Concerns center around the monetization methods, particularly with frequent updates and in-app purchases. Despite the prominence of live-service games, only 35% of developers consider their latest release as such, indicating a disconnect in perception. Key worries include player disinterest (63%) and losing player bases to competitors (62%), raising questions about long-term viability. In response, developers are considering a shift back to traditional monetization models like paid DLC and upfront payments for future releases. ⚡️ Gaming Reports - May 6 - May 10 (2024) 👉 Newzoo shared the top PC/Console titles of March 2024 in the US/Western Europe, and there is Dragon's Dogma II in the second spot. Who could've imagined? There are 4 new titles in the top 20 in March on all platforms. MAU charts, however, are stagnating. All the same names are at the top - Fortnite, Call of Duty, Minecraft, GTA V, and Roblox. Helldivers II, which March performance was fairly good according to SteamDB, is only in 9th position. Those big titles are like black holes, absorbing all players' time. 👉 Stream Hatchet shared a great report on the streaming market. 69% of the audience in Q1'24 was watching Twitch; 16,5% - YouTube Gaming. It's funny, but Steam is the fastest-growing streaming platform right now with +109% YoY on hours watched. That's even cooler because 39,1% of all hours in Steam were spent on new releases. Contrary to 7% on Twitch and 4,3% on YouTube Gaming. 👉 Simon Carless from GameDiscoverCo shared conversion benchmarks of Steam wishlists into sales in the first month. Median conversion for the first month is 27% - you can use this number for benchmarking. Early access titles are usually having worse conversions. And there is a direct correlation between the review % and conversion (what a surprise!). Horrible news today with Rocksteady Studios Ltd being hit with a round of layoffs. According to Eurogamer, a number of employees have been laid off over the past month, with its QA department more than halved (from 33 staff to 15). Additionally, non-QA job were also affected. What is even more horrible is that the report also cites one employee who mentioned on social media that they had been informed they were being made redundant despite being in the middle of paternity leave. 😞 According to the source, the job losses are directly linked to the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, with its poor sales specifically mentioned as a reason for what it describes as “restructuring”. PTW , a leading game development services company, has announced the opening of its fifth US office in Charleston, South Carolina. This strategic move positions PTW to tap into the region's growing tech talent pool and create a new hub for game development. The new studio will focus on providing a range of services, including quality assurance, localization, and game development. PTW aims to create hundreds of jobs in Charleston over the next few years, contributing to the city's thriving gaming community. Bernhard Rieder will lead the Charleston studio, reporting to Sebastien Bisch, VP of American Operations at PTW. Bisch expressed enthusiasm about the new studio, highlighting its potential to become a "center of excellence for the industry" and a flagship location for PTW's US operations. As part of today's LGF 2025 schedule announce we're giving the first glimpse of an original event we're building called New Game Plus. New Game Plus is a brand new expo that will feature a host of new and upcoming games across all platforms - our Official Selection line-up will be at the heart of it but we're already adding more. Why are we doing it? Fact is, the UK has lost all its major games-only showcases this year, so we're stepping up to address the gap. But we're also keenly aware that events in this format need to modernise. NGP will be more curated, more cultural... and more confident. We love games and have faith in their power to entertain and inspire, so we'll build an event that reflects that. (I'm also very sensitive to the commercial realities at play here and why events have lost lustre for big companies - but as a neutral, publicly-funded agency we're going to commit to building something, something created on our terms, that will hopefully re-energise attitudes.) We've got a stunning venue for New Game Plus: the London Museum's exhibition halls in Zone 1. That's right: for once a major London games event in the actual heart of the city with something like 10 different tube/rail/bus stops all a short walk away. We've set two days for it: Thursday 3 April and Friday 4 April. And we'll have affordable tickets for games fans, access for students and school groups, opportunities for creators and media, plus an accompanying industry programme. All the in-person stuff will be backed up by things like our increasingly successful Steam event (which saw hundreds of thousands of wishlists this year), and some fun surprises we have planned for those who wanna check out new games. New Game Plus will have boutique beginnings in 2025 - but has the chance to really scale up. Now we take it to industry. We're in the middle of the main recruitment time for HEIs, so we're only days away from our second Open Day of this academic year, slotted in between a range of taster sessions and other recruitment events. "Selling" a games related course is always a little interesting, but in recent years it has become quite a bit harder; between the industry itself going through significant job losses, the cost of study amidst a cost of living crisis and more generally the broader view of games courses being wasteful or not worth it ("I can learn that from Youtube!"), the team have to work hard to demonstrate the benefits of choosing to spend three years with us. So how do we differentiate ourselves from the competition? What makes us a better choice over Youtube or a two week long bootcamp? It comes down, as ever, to the surrounding infrastructure that comes with studying at university. Spend three years with us and we'll not only give students the knowledge and skills they want, but we'll also help change them as a person (hopefully for the better). The course and the course team are just one part of the larger whole, we encourage students to talk to the careers team who will help them build confidence at interviews and in themselves. We'll link them up with the library staff who can help them find all sorts of resources, whether they're directly related to their course or just a current focus. We bring in alumni who can talk about their experiences since leaving the course; the route they've taken to get where they are and who may become the start of the students professional network. The three years are a chance for students to build a set of lifelong friendships, take part in social events through the SU and step outside of their interests in ways that might otherwise be difficult to achieve. Anywhere that even vaguely promises a job in the games industry at the end of any offering is being disingenuous at best. In fact I make a point of not promising that when I give open day talks, but I go on to explain that the skills we teach and the benefits studying at university bring can go on to open a range of doors that those students may not have even considered as options. It's on us as games academics to put in the leg work to change the perception of games courses; they're definitely not just for playing games and they shouldn't just be a pipeline into a relatively uncaring industry.

How do you build an engineering team from scratch in iGaming? 5 main things to keep in mind: 1️⃣ Hire experts with practical experience. If you want to develop a platform, you need teammates who don't require months-long onboarding and can set the rhythm from the get-go. And of course, understanding the iGaming industry itself is a plus. 2️⃣ Take time to grow the vision and strategy. It's too easy to lose a valuable team these days. Explain to engineers why they should be passionate about your project or product. Despite the industry's trends, money isn't usually the best motivator. 3️⃣ Think ahead about your strategic advantages. Focus on what will empower you in the future. For example, specialize in a powerful bonus AI recommendation engine and hire experts for that. Make it a part of your product vision and use it as a distinctive advantage over competitors. 4️⃣ Be ready to spend like your life depends on it. If I had to set up the engineering team, I'd go for 40 people along with 2-3 strong leaders. The salaries only pile up to 240 thousand dollars a month. Multiply it by 3 years, and you know the rough development cost. That's a bare minimum for the industry. 5️⃣ Treat technologies like tools Some tech gets more attention but It doesn't mean it fits your platform needs. Try to cut unnecessary tools and introduce the ones the team can use to enhance the product. I’m excited to announce the launch of a new series where I'll be sharing my insights and perspectives on the latest developments in the gaming and ad tech industry. In our first piece, I’ll explore the factors behind the Turkish gaming industry's remarkable boom ⬇️ 1. The Turkish government puts money back into the gaming industry - Thanks to the lack of capital gains tax and some employees' exemptions from income tax, money is being reinvested in the games sector. - As announced by Tugbek Olek earlier this year, the government is also covering 50% of two development staff's salaries up to €50k and reimbursing Apple's and Google Play's 30% commission up to 50% and €100k.    2. A young, gaming-focused population  - A 2022 study found that 81% of adults in Turkey play mobile games. And with 44% of the population under the age of 30, a vast majority of the workforce attended Turkish universities and studied abroad – coming back with an international and entrepreneurial mindset. They were able to apply their ideas and create some of the great games companies we see today like Dream Games, Peak, Spyke Games, Masomo and on the hyper/hybrid casual side Rollic, Alictus, Good Job Games and Panteon. 3. International investors  - Building off the support from the government, external investors are becoming more open to investing in Turkey. And with more money coming in, better games will be developed. - If money is kept in the sector, there's a very high chance international companies will reinvest, and now we are seeing the results in the form of a thriving gaming hub. When I started out in the industry in 2012, it was just a matter of time until Turkey became a big name in gaming. Now I'm looking forward to seeing where not only the giants will develop, but also keeping an eye on Fugo Games, Vertigo Games, Fomo Games, Gamegos, Tiramisu Studios and Zuuks Games.
