Most organisations have complex network infrastructures that have developed over time to serve different needs. Most systems now use the ubiquitous IP protocol to transfer information, which means that they can share a common network infrastructure. This brings advantages: a more coherent and converged network is easier to maintain and can provide a user experience that is both richer and simpler.

Taking advantage of this convergence allows additional facilities to be provided across the network. Previously separate services, such as voice, video conferencing and security surveillance, can now use the same network infrastructure, reducing costs and allowing a greater range of users to benefit than ever before.

Allied to these changes has been a trend towards flexible working. Providing your users with portable computers, allowing them to use their own computing equipment, use of wireless networks and secure remote access solutions allows them to work more flexibly and efficiently, as well as saving costs on office infrastructure. As a consequence of this, and of increased use of Internet-based resources, the traditional network perimeter has all but disappeared. The business benefits for this, summarised in a white paper from the Jericho Forum, include wider connectivity with external organisations, electronic interaction with customers, closer alignment of the network with business boundaries and flexible working.
