Earlier in the week I spent some time with James Pittaway 🟢 at Summit M Garage Just one of many times I spend with dealer partners.. With no agenda. Summit have recently stopped representing MG for sales and remain a service point. This is something that many dealers are currently doing or contemplating - across a number of franchises. I was interested to hear how this changes their dealership model. And how this affects the way they use DMS Navigator. I learn a lot in these sort of sessions about how we can better support our dealers. In this case, we had a good discussion on a new customer loyalty scheme that was being launched soon. Discussing how Navigator could help support the scheme, delivering better Customer Service, making the process more efficient and helping to retain the loyalty of their customers over the longer term. TUI is scam, here is why... "Scam - a clever and dishonest plan for making money" (Oxford dictionary) Imagine coming to the shop to buy, for example, a phone. You have multiple of them on the shelves, you compare features, consider price-quality and so on. Finally, the phone is chosen. You are finally happy that the decision is done, it was not easy, there were so many options. Price on the tag is, let's say, 250 Euro. In fact, you expected to get something for 200 Euro, but this seems to be a really good choice, and you are ready to pay the price. You call the shop assistant, he brings a new foiled box from the store, and suddenly announces that the price of the phone is 300 Euro. There is a mistake on the tag. Disappointed, you leave the shop. Sleeping with this fact, you understand next day that you still want exactly that phone, even if it costs 300 Euro. You go to the shop - tag shows 250 Euro. What? You call the assistant, and hear the same story: "sorry, the price is 300". Doesn't matter - you decided already that 300 is OK. You go to cashier, he scans the phone at the register. And... the price is 350 Euro. Isn't it too much (and I mean not only the price)? The phone is not purchased. Emotions are highly negative after being scammed twice in a row. You will probably never come again to this shop, and will also warn others. Sound unreal? This "shop" exists in reality - this is TUI website. You search for a trip, select a hotel. It takes time... You see available rooms with "price 1". You select the offer and get: "sorry, the price was updated" and see "price 2" - several hundred more. You leave, load website next day, see "price 1". Select - see "sorry...", now is "price 2". But, reallly, it was already clear yesterday that price was updated. Why having same situation today??? Finally, you are ready to pay "price 2", you enter all details, credit card information and click "Pay". And here comes the message: "Price was updated, do you want to pay price 3"? Again several hundred more... What would you do?

Last week's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Van market bounces back but watch out for autumn clouds Good news to start the month today, as the latest data today from SMMT shows that the van market returned to growth again – just – in August. While a 1.7% rise might not seem large, it does mean the market’s had its best August since 2021 and reverses two months of a summer slowdown. However, it’s a caveated celebration. Lest we forget, August is a ‘quiet’ month for van purchases, as many businesses – much like consumers in the car market – choose to invest in their fleets during the new plate month of September. Therefore, drawing conclusions on the overall market on August alone can be fraught with pitfalls. The month we’re now in will be the one that sets the tone for the rest of 2024. Challenges particularly remain around our zero emission transition. Year to date, market share for ZEVs, including those in the 3.5-4.25t range, is now down to 5.1%. That’s barely more than half of the 10% target set for the end of the year under the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, underscoring just how important it is to inspire more businesses to make the switch over the coming months, and indeed, years. It’s great that the van market continues to grow overall – but we need action to give operators confidence by maintaining current fiscal incentives and accelerating deployment of van-specific chargepoints. After five months of falls in BEV uptake, we need to see what September brings – and what action we need to take to ensure we can deliver on our shared net zero goals.

This week’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Rising new van uptake but the pressure is on Last month was the busiest October for the new light commercial vehicle (LCV) market in three years, according to SMMT’s latest figures, with 2.4% growth and almost 27,000 vans, pickups and 4x4s joining UK roads. Demand was also at its greenest in 2024, with electric van deliveries rising for the first time in five months, up 61.8% to 2,263 units. Fleets opting to decarbonise should be celebrated, but too few are in comparison with the UK’s mandated levels this year, with EVs representing just 5.6% of all new LCV registrations since January – a considerable distance behind our 10% ambition. It is a concern as manufacturers have made big investments to grow the choice of EVs for fleets, with more than 30 exciting and competitive models. It was welcome and necessary that the Plug-in Van Grant will continue to be available in the next financial year but, evidently, further intervention is going to be needed. Every lever will need to be pulled, especially with the mandate for EV sales planned to rise to 16% of the market next year. Fleet operators need to be confident that going electric is operationally viable but chargepoint infrastructure, certainly that which is suited to the specific needs of vans, is lacking, and remains a worry for operators that want to decarbonise. Among the actions needed is regulatory review to treat all zero emission vans equally and safely – from MOT testing and drivers’ hours to tachograph and speed limiter rules – to avoid discouraging investment. It was positive this issue was raised by Sarah Edwards MP at the House of Commons last week with Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh stating that review, initiated by the previous government, is being continued. It was disappointing for the pickup sector, though, that government is not reflecting HMRC’s decision on double cab taxation in February and will, from April 2025, treat those with a payload above one tonne as cars for capital allowances and benefits in kind. It is set to put the future of new pickup market at serious risk, heaping costs on industries which depend on these vehicles, including farming, construction, utilities and the self-employed. In a tough environment for businesses to invest, it needs to be easier and not harder for operators to replace old vehicles in their fleets, which is the quickest path to decarbonising road transport.
