DHX to Bring AwesomenessTV Shows to Canadian Television

AwesomenessTV, the teen-focused digital media company majority owned by DreamWorks Animation, has reached a pact with DHX Media to license, develop and produce original shows for DHX’s Family Channel in Canada.

The pact covers nearly 100 half-hour episodes of three current AwesomenessTV series: the “AwesomenessTV” sketch-comedy show that airs on Nickelodeon in the U.S.; “Make Me Over,” a reality makeover series hosted by YouTube fashion stars Bethany Mota (pictured above) and Ingrid Nilsen; and “Cheerleaders,” a docu-series about the world of competitive cheerleading.

In addition, DHX will distribute the programming and handle merchandising and licensing outside the U.S. for original content produced under the deal.

“AwesomenessTV has been firing on all platforms and understands our audience,” said Joe Tedesco, SVP and g.m. of DHX Television. “Viewers are easily able to connect with the programming through multiple entry points, and we are thrilled to be creating new series together that will appeal to our audience and attract new viewers.”

AwesomenessTV chief digital Kelly Day added that the deal lets the company reach a Gen Z audience both on a new platform — TV — and in a new territory.

These are the three programs DHX TV has licensed for the Family Channel:

• “AwesomenessTV” (40 episodes): Sketch-comedy compilation series features recurring characters, pranks and pop-song parodies. Guest hosts include 5 Seconds of Summer, Austin Mahone, Cimorelli, Daniella Monet, Emblem3, Fifth Harmony, Grace Helbig, Jack Griffo, Kira Kosarin, Rixton, Smosh, Sydney Park and the Vamps.
• “Make Me Over” (26 episodes): Series hosts Mota (aka MacBarbie07) and Nilsen (aka missglamorazzi) visit teens who have encountered issues ranging from bullying to body insecurities, with the goal of making everyone feel like the most beautiful version of themselves.
• “Cheerleaders” (26 episodes): Follows a small co-ed cheerleading squad, the California All Stars SMOED, as it tries to be the first squad in its division to claim the World Cheerleading Championships title for a second year in a row.
