- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2019When I was studying to become a tour guide in Philadelphia I bought this book to get an overview of the cities history from the time of its founding until the 1900s.
It's a remarkable book and I've reread it twice. Philly is such a great city and this book is an amazing look at a place that has gone through transition after transformation. With sections written by differt writers you get more than one person's view which is interesting. If you're interested in the history of Philly I highly recommend buying this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2014If you ever wondered how Philadelphia grew into the city it is today this book is a great introduction without becoming a textbook. I keep this on my coffee table for guests along with a photo history of Philadelphia and people rave about it every time they come over.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2019I read the first section of this book as part of research I doing for a novel on the American Revolution. It is written by a committee of historians, each one taking on one period, but the section I read was very good.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2014I purchased this book as a gift for someone from Phiadelphia who moved away over 25 years ago and is now living in
the Atlanta Georgia area. He loves it! Brings back all the history of Philly.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2020First half of the book was good. Long winded but good. However, depending on who wrote the chapter, you were informed about their personal political opinions. Especially, regarding the second half of the book. If you’re a Liberal and like to blame all blights of a city on Republicans you’ll love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative facts about Philly town.
The assembled authors and editors have compiled an astonishing review of this city's history throughout its long and varied history; with different judgements and reviews regarding the political, economic and socio-economic aspects of the very varied and multi-ethnic population that has made this city what it is today.
