In the 1970s when archaeologists began digging around the Golconda Fort near Hyderabad in southern India, they discovered a treasure. Buried beneath a layer of ash and debris were a distillery, Syrian wine jars, bangles, ivory chess pieces and fragments of jewellery. The archaeologists dated it to the time of the first ruler of the Golconda Kingdom Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk. The archaeological treasure dated the ash and debris to the last siege of Golconda Fort by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir in 1687. This book traces the story of the prodigiously wealthy Golconda Kingdom from the time it was created in 1518 till it was erased by Aurangzeb after an eight-month siege. For the first time using epigraphic information, empirical research, cartographic evidence and extensive travels, the author brings alive the dramatic story of the fabulous Golconda/Bagnagar/Hyderabad Kingdom.

The book opens with gripping account of powerplay in Golkonda kingdom in the backdrop of death of Sultan Quli Qutub ul Mulk. Unlike many chronicles on history that are mere chronology of events, the book is presentation of history intricately woven with religion and culture of the times. The beautiful strokes of literature by the author added grace to the gripping account of events unravelling in each chapter. The adjectives, anologies, illustrations and cartographic evidences are an icing on the cake. The twists and turns in transformation of Golconda, curious factoids are interesting. The font pleases the eyes equally as much as the maps please the intellect!

A classic. Very well researched and articulated with references. Observe how all the negative reviews coincide with recent local elections in telangana. Ignore the IT cell trolls.

An authoritative book on the history of golconda/hyderabad.

Its a must read for all those interested in hyderabad and its past with corroborated content and contemporary findings.

The book too comes in a terrific print with long lasting fine quality soft covers and paper. The photos inside are in colour.

May seem a bit expensive for paperback but the vast content and extensive research undertaken justifies the price.
Serish nanisetti possesses the knack of a investigative journalist for digging deep into historical mysteries.

The perfect history book for someone who wants to learn more about how Golconda came into existence. It spans 15/16/17th-century stories from around the region of present-day Hyderabad, and covers so much ground you come out feeling you really understand how things came to be. Such a book needs more recognition and praise in our times.

Must read for all budding journalists and anyone with an interest in the history of Hyderabad. You all are in for a treat!

Serish has truly done a wonderful job of bringing together centuries of tales about the Qutb Shahi dynasty and others in this book. The incredible research that would have gone into this book, along with the masterful and unbiased narration makes it the definitive guide for the history of Golconda and Hyderabad.

Having read some of the other reviews on here, it saddens me that such a great compendium of information could be labelled as anything but that. This is an extremely unprejudiced chronicle of the Deccan that practically no other book can offer; Serish's superior story telling transports you back to a time most of us can hardly imagine, and restores the court rooms, the Masjids, the palaces, the struggles, and the way of life in all it's former glory.

It was a true delight to read this account of how Golconda came to be, and all that transpired next.

10/10 recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about the city of Hyderabad and its magnificent multicultural history!

Very biased and dishonest attempt to decipher the past of Hyderabad written from a leftist historian point of view to whitewash the Hindu past and heritage of Hyderabad. Highly UNrecommended.
