[close] This reading group will explore the Greek and Roman world surrounding the Mediterranean from about 1500 BCE to about 500 CE. It will focus on works covering time periods, places, people, games, food, geography, literature, navigation, warfare, art, architecture, science, poetry, drama, epics, trade, languages, mythology, archaeology, religion and much more. We may also extend our discussions into surrounding cultures and their past, e.g. the Minoans, Egypt, Persia and other cultures depending on circumstances and desire. These works will be selected by active members through monthly polls. Hopefully this journey will be both enriching and strongly inspired by the ancient muses. My bookshelves are piling up with books focused on classical studies so this group is an incentive to wander down those paths.

All you need is an enquiring mind and a desire to gain or share “underground knowledge”. This is also a place to discuss the controversial topics explored in The Underground Knowledge Series (non-fiction books) by James Morcan & Lance Morcan as well as the Underground Knowledge podcast show.

[close] A group for those who enjoy reading about hilariously awful, tragically undertaught historical events and ideas. If your friends and family don't want to hear any more talk about corpse medicine, radioactive cosmetics, or the plights of executioners, then you'll find a ready ear right here. Both fiction and non-fiction are welcome; primary sources as well as academic studies. If it's interestingly awful, you're in the right place. We do prefer to focus on relatively unknown aspects of the past (for example, medicinal cannibalism in 17th century Europe) rather than well-known topics. That said, even the most familiar historical stories have some interesting nooks and crannies.
