A wireless keyboard is a convenient accessory to keep at your desk. It eliminates the need for extraneous USB cables connecting things to your computer.

One additional benefit of a wireless keyboard is that you can quickly bring it on the go and extend your remote working setup to feel more like your setup at home. Balancing solid keyboard functionality and portability is no easy feat, though.

So, I grabbed a handful of the top options on the market and took them with me for a couple of weeks of remote working to bring you my take on the best choice for on-the-go productivity.

Just Buy This (All Around Best)

TL;DR: The Casa Popup desk is a truly all-in-one solution that’s better than the sum of its parts.

Why We Recommend This

A good wireless keyboard combines excellent typing with rock-solid connectivity. Its small build and durability also add to its portability. The Logitech Casa series is the brand’s attempt to make something beautifully designed and excellently portable.

The Casa Pop-Up Desk is essentially three accessories in one: A pop-up laptop stand to bring your screen to a comfortable angle, a portable trackpad, and a pretty great portable wireless keyboard.

Pros
  • All-in-one solution with a travel case

  • Decent key travel

  • Beautiful design

Cons
  • Each device connects independently

  • A little bulky in your bag

  • Keystrokes aren’t as clicky as they could be

While this review is more for the Casa keyboard itself, I can’t help but love the complete package on offer here. First, that pop-up stand doubles as a folio-style case to store all the accessories, which makes it easy to throw everything into my bag. I brought the whole setup in situations where I might have just got my laptop. Portability: check.

The trackpad is just okay, with a satisfying, if slightly cumbersome, click needed to use it.

I also found the keyboard pleasant to use. The key travel is between the newest Macbook Pro Keyboards and Logitech's Pebble Keys line. It's a good middle ground for me, but I can see some folks feeling like the typing experience is a little gummy.

While the connectivity is pretty decent for Logitech standards, you do have to connect things separately, which takes away from the all-in-one feel. While portable, the package is a bit bulky and heavy for slimmer bags. But man, the design of this thing is beautiful, and plenty of folks complimented its look at my local coffee shop.

  • Who else recommends it? PC Mag, Wired, and even non-tech publications like NYMag all enjoyed the Casa Pop-Up Desk's portable, all-in-one nature.
  • What do buyers say? Amazon buyers awarded the Casa Pop-Up Desk an average of 4.4 out of 5 stars due to its portability, durability, and overall functionality.

Best Mechanical

Lofree Flow84 Keyboard

TL;DR: The Lofree Flow84 is a sleek, low-profile mechanical keyboard that easily slips into your bag.

Why We Recommend This

The Lofree Flow84 is a unique offering in the keyboard space, staking its claim as one of the first gasket-mounted, low-profile mechanical keyboards. What does that mean? Well, the low profile means that it measures just around two and a half centimeters from the desk to the top of the keycaps.

The gasket mounting refers to the rubbery pads that actually affix the circuit board to the case, giving it a bouncy, satisfying feel.

Pros
  • Excellent gasket-mounted mechanical action

  • Sleek, low-profile design

  • Bluetooth connectivity

Cons
  • Typing angle feels a bit odd

  • No 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity

  • Side RGB lighting is quite faint

The Flow84 I got my hands on features their Ghost switches, a buttery smooth linear switch style with plenty of travel and a lovely sound while you’re typing. The white-and-silver design also makes this keyboard look like Apple designed a mechanical keyboard, which is great if that’s the aesthetic you like.

The connectivity is impressive, featuring USB-C wired mode and Bluetooth 5.0 mode for taking this keyboard on the go. And if you pick up an accessory sleeve, this full-on mechanical keyboard will fit beautifully in a bag on the way out the door.

Some aspects of this keyboard were hard to get used to. First, the combination of the 3.9-degree typing angle and the full mechanical travel of the keys actually caused a bit more work for my wrists and fingers. Because this is a low-profile board, none of my wrist rests elevated things quite enough for proper ergonomics.

I also don’t love that there’s no 2.4-gigahertz dongle connection for more reliable wireless connectivity. While the Flow84 features a complete function-key row, I felt it was a tad cramped at first. But honestly, with the design and the fully mechanical action—if you can find a comfortable wrist rest, the Flow84 could be a real winner.

  • Who else recommends it? Many tech publications—including The Verge and Tom’s Guide—found plenty to love about the Flow84’s sleek, low-profile design.
  • What do buyers say? Amazon buyers love the design and mechanical typing feel of the Flow84.

TL;DR: A foldable, split, ergonomic keyboard that won’t break the bank

Why We Recommend This

The ProtoArc XK03 is a beautifully little folding keyboard that doesn't have a lot of trade-offs. I'll admit, I only became aware of the XK03 when I was embarking on my full ergonomic keyboard here for lifewire, and for that use, I found it a little flat. But I grew to love the keyboard's split, tilted layout so much that I'm giving it the nod here over ProtoArc's more traditional XK01 tri-fold keyboard.

Pros
  • Portable, foldable design

  • Split layout for ergonomics

  • Very affordable

Cons
  • Key travel may be to low for some

  • Split layout takes some getting used to

  • Durability may not last the long haul

The XK03 is super portable, folding in half to a half-inch thick, so if you can fit a small journal into your bag, you can fit this keyboard. However, thanks to its spread-out ergonomic feel, the keys occupy an appropriate amount of space once you fold it out.

You can type similarly to how you’d type on a regular desktop keyboard. Plus, even though its folded-out dimensions give it just a quarter-inch of thickness, the key travel feels similar to that of the top laptop keyboards currently on the market.

One thing to note is that—while I love typing on a split keyboard like this—the average typer may require some time to get used to the layout and the gap right down the middle of the board. There’s also no getting around that the keystrokes are short, so you won’t find it here if you prefer more travel.

I also found that the leathery fringing around the edges was prone to scuffing and fraying over time, so the durability of the XK03 long-term remains to be seen. But as far as complete packages go, I think this supremely affordable little keyboard has found a near-permanent home in my backpack.

  • Who else recommends it? Enthusiasts, Reddit members, and Youtubers have found that this flat little keyboard is excellent for certain types of users on the go.
  • What do buyers say? Amazon buyers love the XK03, lauding its XKM03 (the package with a mouse) as an excellent value for the money and awarding it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

How We Test

Like with most of the keyboards I tested, I made sure every option on this list would fit seamlessly into my workday. As such, I spent at least three full days with each keyboard, sending emails and messages and performing standard productivity tasks (including writing this review!).

This category also necessitated that I ensured solid wireless connectivity of these keyboards and could reasonably expect to bring them on the go. Therefore, each product also got a day at a coffee shop.

What to Look For

When exploring the right portable, wireless keyboard for your needs, it’s important to weigh a few key categories:

  • The typing feel of the keyboard
  • How easily (and solidly) does it connect
  • Is it small enough to bring with you
  • Other features and functions

I researched or tried out products from:

  • Apple
  • Kensington
  • Keychron
