Easy approach that i use to learn: 1- watch a crash course, in 1.5 speed. 2- try to implement alone what they did, if you struggle, use official documentation or google it to learn more. 3- if you really get stuck, rewatch the crash course in what you stopped 4- after that, create a simple app and try to implement what you learned. 5- work on a bigger project, open source or search for an entry-level internship

For Android standard documentation, code labs, ProAndroidDev are the quiet useful resources. Apart for all the above mentioned resources exploring opensource projects is key to learn and understand different concepts.

The only way to get better is projects . But the actual answer is a bit tougher than that. Before you take on a project you face a lack of confidence . It's more for junior developers who are still yet to face the crippling sense of being stuck. For juniors I would suggest doing a tutorial thrice. I feel you can actually grasp a tutorial if you do it thrice . Once that is done jump to projects . For already experienced professionals. Read Read Read more code. You would learn more from analysing problems someone else has solved faster than if you were to come up solution on your own. Open source contributions go a long way.

Furthermore, it's crucial to refactor your code frequently to update deprecated code. There was a reason that something got deprecated. And the sooner you do it the better. I remember ignoring a deprecated method on a project for too long and when iOS 13 came out, every time that method was called the app would crash. That was a painful yet humbling experience.

Once you complete your basics with multiple code examples then you must think about the standards. Use your own app multiple times and then compare it with other available apps in the market. Now you can list out the difference. And you will definitely find the standards UI ideas. If you're in the initial stage don't prefer the use of multiple libraries instead you must use the native functionality.

If there weren't standards, we would have chaos. No matter what you do, you need to have some rules. Rules on how to drive, how to play basketball, or how to write good, clean, and high-quality code. If you use deprecated libraries, you'll have to wait for a moment when you will not be able to use the new features of the programming language until the library developers update it to the newest version. But will they? Quality of the code. When you don't know how to write clean code, stick to Apple's documentation. Try to replicate it. Apple is well-known for its own ecosystem. It has a lot of native features, so there's no need to rely on many third-party components. Apple, Apple, and Apple again, follow them.

In Android development, I've learned that success hinges on following platform standards and proactively updating code. Mistakes like ignoring deprecated methods have taught me to evolve with the platform. Guidelines are guidelines not rules. They are created for people who do not have their own ideas of what to do. If you have enough experience, you don't need guidelines. The problem is if people confuses guidelines as rules. Yes it's a good idea to code that way, but it's not always appropriate to code that way. I learned there isn't right answers, there's definite wrong answers. The only correct code solution is, a better one, or a better one. There's never a right one.

Both the iOS and Android platforms have their advantages and disadvantages. Native platforms offer access to all the latest features and typically provide better speed compared to cross-platform development. Jetpack Compose is the latest and it is pretty stable. It is gaining a lot of popularity within the community as it limits the pre requisite of Kotlin or Java. Syntax is more user friendly and less technical. Coroutines have made the AsyncTask, Threads, etc very obsolete as it is easy to multi thread with Coroutines and Flows. Hilt has simplified the dependency injection. CameraX has standardised the Camera features across all OEMs.

When SwiftUI was announced, I waited too long to learn it because everyone was saying it's too new to be used on enterprise projects. And within a few years, SwiftUI caught up (almost) and lots of people started using it. In order to stay relevant, I had to spend a lot of time to learn SwiftUI as fast as possible. You don't want to be in that situation. There's a huge difference between learning something at your own pace versus learning something in a rush because your project demands it. It's not fun. And you miss out on a lot of things. Furthermore, you want to be known as the subject matter expert for the new technologies at your workplace. This creates a feedback loop which further sharpens your skills.

For example it's difficult to come accros a simple tutorial that demonstrates how an Activity perfroms without having to go through all other components in different layers (Viewmodels, repositories, use cases etc). While the intention behind this is good. I think it's important to understand and convey the message that the necessities of having multiple layers of abstraction is not an ultimate recipe.

Be up-to-date with the latest trends and news regarding mobile development. It is not necessary to work with the latest concepts being released, but at least have a look on them.

Build a project from scratch. Make a a real project out of it. Publish it, share it. Try to make profit out of it. Try to solve a problem! Offer your services to someone that may need an app. That’s an easy way to build a portfolio (and even get clients!)

These are all challenging separately. But things can get more challenging when you have to think about all these aspects happening concurrently. You should first practice each of this in isolation and slowly bring different actors playing at the same time to increase your understanding of how platform works in complex situations

I used to be an average developer. And then I started doing those leetcode challenges in my free time. In a very short amount of time, I became one of the very few people at my job who were able to work with this very complex part of our legacy codebase. In order to become better at something, you need to practice. The more you practice the better you become. And the most important part - DO NOT PRACTICE ALONE. When you practice alone you embed your mistakes. You need to get feedback from others and make improvements. Otherwise you might end up becoming super adamant about doing things the wrong way. That's the ONLY way you can up your game.

I worked on a project where everything was first written in Swift for iOS, and then it was converted to Kotlin for Android. Not only did it put constraints on the iOS codebase (since not everything that's available in Swift is available in Kotlin and we had to keep that in mind while writing swift code), it also resulted in the Android codebase to be way below the current market standards. Each language and platform comes with its own quirks. The point of writing code is to give instructions to the machine. Using the same approach for multiple platforms may result in varying degree of efficiency. You need to be able to use the right tool to solve a problem efficiently in a given context. You don't want to shovel snow using a lawn mower.
